TEVAR HAS THAT MAINSTREAM ATTITUDE

STORY: A corrupt politician gets infatuated with a morally upright student and will go to any lengths to marry her. But she spurns his advances and seeks shelter with a boy her age.

REVIEW: Hell hath no fury like a politician scorned. This stands true for the better part of India where every minister is a government unto himself. So you have Mathura's minister-cum-goonda Gajender Singh (Manoj Bajpayee) wooing collegian Radhika (Sonakshi Sinha). When she rejects his marriage proposal, he vows to get the girl by hook or by crook.

There's bound to be an Alpha male hero to rise against the archetypal villain. In comes Agra boy Pintu Shukla (Arjun Kapoor) - a combination of Rambo, Terminator and Salman Khan (so he says). The son of Shukla (Raj Babbar) the superintendent of police, Pintu's wastrel existence gets meaning when his path crosses that of Radhika. From thereon, it's one explosive ride between the hunter, the prey and the protector.

Amit Sharma's Tevar, a remake of the Telugu hit Okkadu (2003), is over-a-decade-old wine served on a larger canvas. But one mustn't grudge the filmmaker for telling us an old story. After all, in the last decade, not much has changed in the political landscape of India. The Gajenders of the country do run a parallel government. So when murders are committed in broad daylight or the media is lynched by a mob, you have to just stand by and watch.

Instead, you reserve those claps for Babbar and Bajpayee, who deliver class acts even in this milieu. Arjun is bombastic. Sonakshi is adept, but there has been an overdose of her in recent times. Subrat Dutta as the henchman Kakdi shows that a good actor can do wonders even in a lesser role.

The songs Superman and Shruti Haasan's playback attempt Joganiya have recall value. Of course, the film should've been reduced by a good 20 minutes - it doesn't run quite as fast as Arjun does on screen.

Amit makes a smooth progression from 30-second commercials to a 159-minute-long film. His penchant for colours, the right use of the Taj Mahal (as a monument of love), his finesse in presenting the real locations indicate his adroitness in filmmaking.

Bollywood review: Arjun Kapoor's Tevar' pays tribute to Salman Khan

Oddly the movie could also be an ode to Abhishek Bachchan for his efforts at reviving Kabadi

What do you get when you mix Rambo, Terminator and Salman Khan?

It's Pintu aka Ganashyam.

It may appear a dull name for a Bollywood hero, but his spirit and attitude, almost makes up for it.

Our self-proclaimed superman and "fan of Salman Khan" is on a mission in Tevar' to protect women from lecherous baddies. So, every time he sees a woman tortured, teased or abused, he steps in to thulp the goons into pulp.

While his operations often ends up with roaring applause, one lands him with the local gangster's "fianc".

Stuck without much option and a dainty princess to guard, Pintu decides to flap his unseen cape and play his superhero alter ego instead. What it does win him in return is newfound respect from his mama and papa, some cool dance moves with a hot item girl, approval from his nagging kid sister, and love of the most passionate kind.

Kick-starting the new year is young gun Kapoor, who takes over from seniors Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar and his mentor Salman Khan to lend Bollywood flavour to an earlier South-Indian blockbuster (Okkadu').

Much like the other remakes, director Amit Ravindernath Sharma's work is deafening and purposeless, and plugs romance and prompts hopeless lovers to spend much of their screen time wrestling and punching for love.

Although the movie begins with Pintu attempting to win the Kabbadi' championship, he gets blinded by love, and soon loses focus. If you've watched the trailers, then you could easily skip the first-half, and slip into the theatre for the second-half.

The narrative is predictable, and often sluggish, but Laxman Utekar's striking cinematography peps up Amit Sharma and Shantanu Srivastava's screenplay impressively. Unimaginative product placements just add to the mess.

Arjun Kapoor, who gets his influential daddy Boney Kapoor's to back him for his sixth movie, fails to pump it up. He snarls and smirks, glares and growls, with earnestness, but soon falls into a tiring routine.

It's a given that Bollywood kitsch is more about flamboyance and less about realism, but it's unfortunate that daddy Kapoor didn't find a more significant part for his junior.

Sonakshi Sinha plays the lady in demand with minimal make-up, long curls, and minus her trademark eyelash extensions. She might win points for looking different, but the writers don't allow her character to grow or influence. She's left voiceless and sandwiched between two strange men. Barring one moment when she yells her man into silence, she's fairly muted.

Veteran Manoj Bajpayee is faultless as the villain, who is unafraid to walk with his pants down. Even though we've seen his menacing acts before, he manages to thrill and scare with aplomb each time.

Raj Babbar and Deepti Naval have bit roles, but it's Arjun's kid sister who is the most fun to watch.

Had director Sharma tweeked the storyline and injected charm and passion into it, it might've turned things around. It's unfortunate, he didn't.

Arjun broods, Manoj so lewd...what a bore this Tevar dude!!

Tevar

Director- Amit Sharma

Actors- Arjun Kapoor, Sonakshi Sinha, Manoj Bajpayee and Rajesh Sharma

Rating- 2 stars

Recently when I met Arjun Kapoor during the promotions of Tevar, I asked him what the most meaningful dialogue in the film is. He said and I quote- "Kabaddi, kabaddi, kabaddi, kiski todu gardan, kiski todu haddi?" It was then that I understood the real meaning of facepalm.

Tevar is an unusual love story between Moochi Man (Manoj Bajpai), Ditsy Dame (Sonakshi Sinha) and Pintu Boy (Yep that's his name in the film- Arjun Kapoor). Unusual because characters in this film fall in love for some very strange reasons. For instance, Moochi Man falls in love with ditsy dame because she is dancing. Ditsy Dame falls in love with Pintu boy because he is fighting and Pintu Boy falls in love with Ditsy Dame because the film is getting too long. Trust me the' I love you' moment happens only at the climax of the film.

It's a maverick love story on the run where Pintu saves Ditsy in Mathura. He dodges naked swords of Moochi and his men, ducks from police men's bullets, jumps off buildings, races and crashes his car to finally and safely bring Ditsy home in Agra. And guess what!? Ditsy doesn't say sorry or thank you but complains how she has forgotten her US visa papers back in Mathura. Errr what?? Yes Ditsy has Mathura-to-Manhattan dreams so that she can be away from Moochi. So you see the action conveniently keeps shifting from Agra to Mathura and back like a convenient trip to Lulu centre every weekend. And mind you they make sure we know we are in Agra because every shot in the city has The Taj Mahal in the background. So no matter the shot is set in a garden or on the terrace the monument looms large. Short of putting Taj Mahal posters in the kitchen and bathroom, it's omnipresent like it wasn't just a monument but Burj Khalifa visible even from Sharjah.

However Laxman Utekar has done a brilliant job of capturing both the cities beautifully in his lens. The production design by Aparna Sud and the art direction by Amit Lad also earn a special mention for brining the streets of these cities alive and recreating the festival of Holi so beautifully.

The film even scores in characterization.

Pintu respects women. He really does. In an important scene he saves a young girl from an eve teaser and in a heartbeat sings a song; Main Superman, Salman ka Fan, jo le panga, kar du MAA-BEHAN!'

Even Radhika is such a sensitive character. The writers have given her so much depth. For instance she doesn't like peas. She likes only paneer. See such quirks. Also there is a pensive side to her character as she loses her beloved brother in the movie. In a very emotional scene she fondly remembers her dead brother and in exactly five seconds she raps in a song, "let's celebrate this moment". The writers don't exactly tell us which moment' though! My-bro-died-I-am-so-sad- moment?'

The film is full of such brilliant screenplay, like the death of Ditsy's brother juxtaposed with an item number by Shruti Hasan.

Arjun-now-available-in-papa's-production-Kapoor is exactly what he was in Ishaqzaade, slightly brooding, slightly intense and when nothing seems to work, just smile.

Sonakshi-now-available-in-a-new-haircut-Sinha can do such roles in her sleep. And put everyone to SLEEP too.

The real stars of the film are Manoj Bajpayee and Rajesh Sharma. They both infuse such life into their otherwise one dimensional characters. Manoj Bajpayee is intimidating as Bahubali. What's interesting is that both Manoj Bajpayee and Arjun Kapoor have dreamy eyes. What you do with them differentiates the stalwart from the amateur.

Tevar ironically lacks attitude and spunk. Watch it only for Manoj Bajpayee.

Does this movie have any hot/decent looking villains??? That'd be the only thing that'd motivate me to watch this crap.

I love the trend of visually appealing villains !!!!

Everybody's pocket is now empty after PK. Poor Tevar is bali ka bakra.

Thankfully the film is bad (as per Sneha), so deservedly so.
