'The mentally strong will survive'

With the elimination of Ajay Nagrath, five contestants remain in the show 'Biggest Loser Jeetega' (Sahara One). To win the grand prize—a lakh for each kilogram lost—the contestants are being trained by Andrew Leipus, former physiotherapist to the Indian cricket team and trainers Yusuf Khan and Deepika Mehta.

Trainer for the Blue team, Yusuf has become a favourite with the contestants with all the evicted contestants swearing by his contribution to their fitness.

Yusuf says that some people need an isolated environment to lose weight, so that there are no distractions to their goal. Will the contestants be able to resist temptations once they are out in the normal surroundings? "Yes, they've come here after trying out every possible weight loss method. Now they know what their calorie intake and output should be. One can see a difference in their attitude. Every week, we give them hard to resist temptations. Initially, they fell for it. But now, they don't accept any temptation. They realize the difficulties they've endured to lose every kilo."

About the game, he says, "It's not just a physical game, it's also mental—every action of theirs is blown out of proportion-whether happy or sad. Only those who are mentally strong will survive."

Doesn't the competition and elimination discourage the participants? Yusuf disagrees, "Contestants from the international show have succeeded in adopting healthier lives. It has helped to educate them to lead a disciplined lifestyle. The eliminated contestants will be our brand ambassadors."

In the initial weeks, an infuriated Yusuf had refused to impart training to contestants Ajay Nagrath and Natasha Grover. Rumoured to be in love, they would stay awake till the wee hours and hamper the training process by coming late.

Yusuf clarifies, "I did not have any problem with them spending time together, but that should not hamper the show's procedure. They did not listen to me and I decided not to give them any further training. But they soon got their act together."

Who does he think could win the contest? "Sandeep Sachdev has got a very good chance but I won't be surprised if Natasha wins too. I train with her, she's much focused, mentally very strong and determined," he ends.
