I dont understand why a big fuss is always made in our soaps regarding the keys..... I dont come from a joint family but do you guys really think that this happens in daily life?

I suppose every1 in the house respect the person who holds the house key. those keys can open each and every lock inside the house. It can open up door as well as the money safe inside he house .That explains why every1 is after the house key
This is a very old tradition in Indian i think.

Only half of the thing in soaps happens in real life..... so dont worry too much

I don't think this happens today. I grew up in a joint family. As far as I remember my mom and granny had their stuff in a locker inside the bank and both of them had the keys.
