EXTREMELY LONG DISCLAIMER: 😆😳

I'm warning you, chapter 38 is an extremely long update that may or may not be entirely coherent in terms of narration style.

Firstly, I'm on cloud nine from watching Piyush's re-entry into the show.

Secondly, this chapter is a collection of things that I had written earlier and things that I added now to fit into the story. Some flashback moments from this update were meant to be the opening parts of this FF because I wanted to begin with Kabir's past, but for some reason I decided against it and gave you the chapters about Rachna that you have already read. However the narration that I had already composed was just written in such a way that I didn't want to redo the entire thing so I just left it as is.

Now if you got through all that 👍🏼.

Scroll down below to the next post to read the actual update. 😃

Chapter 38:

"Karan, you finish up with dinner. I'm just going to see if Kabir is awake or not. Call out if you need anything."

Rachna walked out of the kitchen and entered the bedroom. She placed the tray that she was carrying on the side table and sat on the bed next to Kabir. Feeling his forehead, she breathed a sigh of relief noticing that his fever was very low. Sensing Rachna's touch, Kabir opened his eyes slightly. Seeing that he was awake, Rachna helped Kabir to sit up.

"I made you some khichdi Kabir. You have to eat something before you can take any more medicine."

As Rachna picked up the bowl of khichdi from the tray, Kabir held her hand and shook his head.

"I don't want to eat anything Rachna." His words came out as whispers.

"Just a little. I'll feed you myself. Chalo, open your mouth."

Reluctantly, Kabir opened his mouth to accept the bite that Rachna was holding out for him. Chewing slowly, his eyes filled with tears. Resting his head back against the headboard, Kabir closed his eyes and let the tears trickle slowly down his cheek.

"Kabir? What happened? You didn't like the khichdi? Should I make something else for you? Soup?"

Rachna panicked seeing Kabir's tears and placed the bowl that was in her hands back on the side table. Before she could say anything further, she heard Kabir's soft voice.

"Papa would feed me just like this when I used to get sick as a child, at least before he sent me away to boarding school."

Rachna held Kabir's hand in support. He was silent for a few minutes before he opened his eyes and gazed distantly at the dark window on the wall opposite to the bed.

"I was 10 when he sent me off to boarding school. I think he did it more out of necessity than anything else. I always used to be scared around Gayatri so he must have thought that sending me away would be good for me. I didn't mind actually. Benaras was completely different from Mumbai, but it always felt more like home to me than Mumbai ever did. And papa used to visit me once a month, sometimes even twice. She never accompanied papa on these visits, but he would often bring Karan with him and the three of us would spend the weekend together. It's those times that I treasure the most even today. Eventually Karan also joined me at the boarding school and papa's trips to visit us became almost weekly. One weekend papa didn't come though; I was 17 at the time. Instead, his lawyer arrived and informed Karan and I about his death."

--------------------------

"Kabir beta, Karan beta, what I'm about to tell you is going to be tough for you to hear. Your father was travelling home from a business conference in Pune when his car met with an accident. His car skidded off the road and fell into a deep ravine. The police managed to recover the car but your father's body was not found. They're still searching but it's highly unlikely that your father managed to survive the accident."

Stunned by the news that had just been delivered, Kabir remained rooted to his spot. Meanwhile, Karan broke down crying and hugged his brother tightly. The lawyer looked on at the two boys sadly before continuing in his professional tone.

"Your mother has requested that you two remain here at school until your exams are over. She will contact you shortly."

The lawyer stayed in the room for a short while longer before he patted both the boys' shoulders and silently exited the room.

------------------------

"I lost my father but the worst part is that I couldn't even perform his final rites because they never found his body. Losing papa was killed something inside me; I lost a part of myself that day. The biggest, in fact only, support in my life was snatched away from me in an instant and there was nothing I could do about it. Karan became my sole reason to live; caring for him and helping him overcome the grief of papa's death allowed me to forget my own pain. I guess I kind of became numbed to the idea that papa was gone; it was a reality but a kind of hazy one for me, a reality that I just didn't want to face. The only contact that Gayatri had with us was when she had her assistant send us our plane tickets to Mumbai after our exams were over. We'd been at the house for 2 weeks already before we even saw her."

------------------------

"Oh darling! Come on into the house and we'll have that bottle of wine that I mentioned to you on the flight earlier."

Kabir watched the scene from above, standing in the balcony that adjoined his bedroom, as Gayatri pulled a man out of the car, someone whom he wasn't familiar with.

"Driver, park the car and bring the luggage into the house. Make sure you're careful with the suitcases; there's a lot of fragile stuff in there. And if I find even one of my Italian wine goblets damaged, I'm taking it out of your paycheck."

Kabir observed disgustedly as Gayatri turned her stern gaze away from the driver and locked her lips with the stranger, giggling like a lovesick teenager. He remained rooted to his spot on the balcony when he saw Karan run out of the house.

"Mom! You're home!"

Kabir watched as Karan moved closer to Gayatri to give her a hug. He became furious when she pushed Karan away, causing him to fall. Karan cried as his elbow began to bleed, but Gayatri dismissively walked into the house with the unknown man on her arm. Kabir rushed out of his room and down the stairs to look after Karan, who had come inside the house by now and was being tended to by the servants.

"Karan! Are you all right?"

The little boy looked up at his older brother with tears in his eyes and nodded faintly. "I miss papa bhaiyya."

Kabir gave a comforting hug to the young boy before he stormed into the den, where Gayatri was cozily sharing a drink with the stranger that she had come into the house with. Kabir grabbed the bottle of wine from Gayatri's hand and smashed it onto the ground. He did the same with the wine glasses that she was attempting to fill, sending the red liquid sloshing onto the plush, expensive carpet and sofa. Gaytari stood up and raised her hand, giving a resounding slap to Kabir.

"How dare you!"

Kabir glared at Gayatri, meeting her menacing gaze with his own fury filled eyes, as he spoke through his clenched teeth.

"Three months. It's been three months since papa died and you're out gallivanting with random man!"

Gayatri raised her hand again to strike Kabir, who stuck his own arm out to grab her wrist in mid-air.

"Don't even think about it! I'm not that poor 6 year old kid that you can knock around and scare."

He threw her wrist down forcefully, causing Gayatri to lose her balance and fall back onto the couch. Kabir stepped closer as he hovered over her and spoke down to her.

"Do whatever the hell you want, but just stay away from me and my brother, or else."

----------------------

"I left that day. Staying in that house was killing me. Every single item, every wall, every corner reminded me of papa. I went back to Benaras because that was the only other place in the world that I knew at the time. I stayed with a friend and worked at his dad's shop to pay for my room and board. I wanted to bring Karan with me but that wretched woman threatened to call the police if I left the house with him, so I had to spend the summer by myself in Benaras, worrying about Karan all alone in that house. Thankfully, he too came to Benaras when school started back up and we were together again. Since I only had one year of school left, I kept working part time to save up money for college. Of course Gayatri sent money every month but I just collected her checks and put them into the bank for Karan's use; I didn't want anything to do with her money. I stayed in Benaras for college so I could be with Karan, but I went away to Delhi for graduate school since Karan was older by that time. I got an MBA since papa had always wanted me to take over his business once I was old enough. I even moved back to Mumbai and joined his office after I graduated, though I refused to live in the same house as that woman so I bought myself this apartment."

--------------------

"Welcome Kabir sir."

The office staff greeted their new boss with a bouquet of flowers.

"Sir, Mrs. Tripathi is waiting for you in her cabin. She would like to meet with you to explain the project that you will be handling."

Kabir nodded slightly as he was led into Gayatri's cabin, an oversized room decorated opulently with furniture from Greece, rugs from Morocco, and little trinkets from every place around the world that she had ever visited. Kabir looked towards Gayatri with a scowl as she dismissed the rest of the staff with a wave of her hand, leaving the two of them alone in the oversized room.

"Still carrying around that attitude of yours I see. Well keep it in check because this is my office and it runs by my rules."

Gayatri glared at Kabir with an angry stare before she rung for her assistant to bring in a project file. She threw the file across the table at Kabir with a smirk.

"Here's the project you'll work on. Make sure you have the details of this file memorized because I don't like mistakes. Your desk is right outside my cabin so go on and get to work."

Kabir smiled before he pushed the file back towards Gayatri.

"I'm not a bloody intern so what makes you think that I'll be interested in memorizing how you like your coffee and what type of salad dressing you prefer. I'll be working on that new deal we're signing with the London firm. Have your assistant give me all the related documents in my cabin."

He stressed the last word to make sure it made an impact before he walked out of the room and turned a left into the corridor, leaving Gayatri fuming behind him. Taking the elevator up to the top floor of the building, Kabir took a deep breath before he opened the door and stepped into his new office, the cabin that had once been his father's. Gayatri had turned the space into her personal lounge and bar over the years, so Kabir removed his jacket, hung it on the back of a chair, rolled up his sleeves, and began to move the room's gaudy belongings out into the corridor. In a short while, the room was empty except for an almost bare desk and a few chairs. Panting and sweating from all the heavy lifting, Kabir sat down in a chair and took a sip of water before he called the receptionist to enquire about the interior designer that he had called.

"Yes sir, she's here. Would you like me to send her up to your cabin?"

"Hmmm, go ahead and do that."

He worked with the designer intimately over the course of the next week to set up his office as a direct replica of his dad's earlier cabin as he remembered it. Once the setup of the cabin was finished, he began working tirelessly to become up to date with the details of all the projects that the company was working on. In a matter of months, Kabir took over the reins of the business that Gayatri had been controlling since his father had died.

Needless to say, Gayatri did not take this dethroning too well, but all it took was a few phone calls, a scandalous media story, and a few bribed board members to have Kabir thrown out. Being thrown out of his own company hit Kabir hard; it was almost as though he was reliving the nightmarish days of the aftermath of his father's death. The day he resigned was also the last day he spent in Mumbai. He wanted nothing to do with the city, his father's business, or that wretched woman.

The only other place that Kabir could call home was Benaras and that's what soon became the operational base for his very own KT Creations. Innovative designs, some successful fashion shows, and a couple of positive reviews from some high profile clients catapulted KT Creations into the limelight. Kabir Tripathi hid himself away and transformed into KT, the mysterious designer whom no one but his closest personal staff had the pleasure of seeing. All media bytes and client consultations were handled by his personal assistant under his direct supervision.

Years of isolation left Kabir Tripathi shoved into some deep corner of KT's body until of course, destiny brought Rachna to Benaras, weaving the beginnings of a love story that would join together two people who were already entwined together by the darkness of their pasts.

-------------------

"But of course, everything that I have been living with over the past 13 years is a lie. Everything is a lie."

Rachna squeezed Kabir's hand as she wiped away his tears and whispered softly into the dark silence.

"No, it's not. Our love is the brightest truth in this entire web of mystery. And don't you forget that."

Nivi, read your earlier post that you were going to post another update, and waited...now I can go to bed 😆.

Going to digress first...I agree Piyush's return to SSLK too much! All my favorite flashbacks, and then the end ... and the preview , I'm in RaBir heaven already, like I'm sure you are😉
Anyway, back to the update:
Hat's off to you Nivi. I really enjoyed learning Kabir (and Karan's) backstory. Oh those poor children and that woman😡.
So I'm guessing she was either a threat to or perceived threat to their dad. Perchance did she arrange the accident, or did their father stage it himself...please update soon and let us know.
Thanks for the PM.
