'Insurgent' Director Robert Schwentke Will Return For 'Allegiant - Part 1'

(Photo : Facebook/Allegiant) Robert Schwentke, the director of the Veronica Roth adaptation "Insurgent," is officially returning to the franchise to direct the next installment, "Allegiant Part 1."

The "Divergent" franchise is welcoming back Robert Schwentke. Schnwentke, who directed "Insurgent," will officially return to direct the franchise's third film, "The Divergent Series: Allegiant - Part 1."

"Insurgent," the second installment, hits theaters March 20 and recently wrapped filming in September. The film is currently in post-production. Neil Burger, who directed "Divergent," opted out of "Insurgent" due to scheduling.

Following in the steps of "The Hunger Games," "Twilight" and "Harry Potter" films, the final installment of "The Divergent Series" will be broken into two parts. "Allegiant - Part 2" will be released March 18, 2016.

The franchise is based on the trilogy of YA novels by Veronica Roth. The first book, "Divergent," was published in 2011. The series follows Beatrice "Tris" Prior, who lives in a dystopian, post-apocalyptic version of Chicago. The society operates by placing citizens into five different factions, and hunting down and killing those who are divergent. Tris' story begins when on Choosing Day, she decides to leave the Abnegation faction, for the selfless, and transfer to Dauntless, for the brave.

This year's "Divergent" film adaptation grossed $151 million in the U.S. and $138 million at the international box office. The Lionsgate filmed starred Shailene Woodley and Theo James, who both appear in "Insurgent" and will return for "Allegiant" as well.

Other cast members set to return for "Allegiant" include Ansel Elgort, Octavia Spencer, Zoe Kravitz, Naomi Watts and Miles Teller. Noah Oppenheim will write the "Allegiant" script, and Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher will produce with Red Wagon Entertainment.

The film adaptation has boosted Roth's book sales, according to Variety. Sales have increased from 17 million copies to more than 30 million since the March release of "Divergent."

There is no word yet on whether Schwentke will direct the second half of "Allegiant," which is scheduled to be released March, 24, 2017.
