I know right.. All Med. students have to study basics of all faculties in MBBS & in their housejob, have to work in all dept as interns. Having assisted in all surgeries they can fill in in case of emergency but NO, any surgeon cannot perform any surgery.. Neurosurgery is a Super Speciality Degree which requires the Surgeons to take up M.Ch. (Master of Chirurgical) in Neurosurgery course.

In USA, Neurosurgeons undergo six to eight years of specialized training following medical school & that's one of the longest training periods of any medical specialty. After successfully completing this training and after at least two years of medical practice, including successfully passing a written and oral examination, the neurosurgeon then becomes American Board-certified.
