The opening day collection of recent big films has proved one thing: The 3 Khans, Hritikh, and Ranbir are the only 5 stars in Bollywood today that can guarantee a huge opening!
Ranveer Singh had two 16+ crore openers with Ram Leela and Gunday, but his next release (Kill Dill) opened to a shockingly low 6 crores. Saif Ali Khan's case is even worse: 12 crores for Humshakals, to 3-4 crores for Happy Ending!

Akshay Kumar gave a 5 crore opening with Joker just two years ago. Ajay Devgan gave a 3.50 crore opening day with Tezz in that same year.

Both of the above films (Joker and Tezz) had no buzz, but a star like Ranbir got a film with no buzz (Besharam) a huge 21 crore opening day! Sure, it was a big holiday, but star power still played a major role.

The Khans, Hritikh, and Ranbir are the 5 stars that can guarantee a huge, double-digit opening day collection!

😆 Very true! The opening day collection of Happy New Year is more than the lifetime collection of films like Kill Dill, Joker, Phata Poster Nikla Hero, Finding Fanny, Hasee Toh Phasee, and many other films!

While that is undisputedly true, it is also important to remember that these 'big guns' mostly rely on holidays and long weekends to boost collections.

If their movies released on a normal weekend without much fanfare, I don't think the disparity would be as high.

I think that even on a normal weekend these stars are very capable! Aamir Khan's Dhoom 3 got a 100 crore non-holiday opening weekend. Kick also got a huge 80+ crore non-holiday pre-Eid weekend with Kick. Hritikh in pre-Diwali phase got 70+ crore opening weekend of Krrish 3, and Ranbir got 60+ crore non-holiday opening weekend with YJHD!

But yes, I do agree with your point that holidays and long weekends do boost opening collections 😊

I think release date plays a huge hand.
People will not recognize it, but its true.

Why is it that a Ranveer gives a Gunday, then he gives a Kill Dil?
Or Saif gives a strong opening in humshakals, and then less than half in Happy Ending?

The pattern is simple.
Films that come after a MASSIVE HUGE release suffer.
We JUST had Happy New Year breaking and shattering records. Before that, Bang Bang. Audiences have gone out and spent crores on those films. Most of the movies that follow will definitely feel it's impact. Abhi abhi toh families just watched this Srk movie, probably won't go out and spend on another movie soon.

Now if Kill Dill or HE were shifted and were the first movies out or in a dry phase, they would do well.

The same happened last year post Ram Leela and Krissh 2. And then the subsequent films all flopped for weeks aft wards.

True. Also, it's not that simple.

The genre also matters, the music also matters, the look and feel of the film (completely dependent on the prod team) also matters. There are a lot of things that come into play. And of course, like you pointed out, the timing of the release, ensuring there is no major clash etc plays a huge role too.

What happens when Salman does a movie which does not target masses? Tanks like Yuvvraaj. Of course it doesn't help that it was a terrible film. Likewise, Aamir's Dhobi Ghat?Hrithik's Guzaarish?

Absolutely.
Music has a HUGE hand. How else can a movie with newcomers like Ashiquie 2 get such a huge hit tag? The music did wonders.

There's definitely a lot of factors that come into play.

but overall, this TM has a point that in general, the Khans, and to a certain extent Hrithik and Ranbir are the ONLY stars that can sometimes bypass even the crappy promos, or terrible music, and terrible films.

this is a temporary statistics and is not guaranted in even near future.
What do you mean huge opening? 10 cr+, 20 cr+, 30 cr+?

The only actors who can guarantee a HUGE opening consistently are Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan. SRK manages that with his marketing skills and holidays; Salman with crazy fan following and holiday. They manage it with any director, and any production house.

All others are chai kam paani 😆. It's not rocket science to manage big opening on a Raju Hirani Film, but it's shocking to manage it with ppl like Nadiadwala n Farah Khan.

@Desigal and @OrganizedChaos, I definitely agree with your points about how music, genre, release, etc all play an important role in a film's opening.

But I think even for a non-holiday, Yuvraaj if released today would get a huge opening, possibly near 20 crores, as Salman and Katrina are both in it (Anil Kapoor was in it too). The poor opening back in 2008 also had do to with Salman being in a very bad phase that time with many of his films flopping at the box office.
