Can't we have dumb characters ?

Can't we have stories around not so intelligent people ?

Can't we have no so intelligent people, but with genuine and noble intentions ?

Can't we have dumb people, who can get hurt deeply b/c of something ?

who may not be mentally stable, who may be normal, but can lack slightly in intelligence department ?

who are frustrated b/c of not understanding/realizing some things, which could also be b/c of their not -so intelligent brain ?

Can't we have a story in which most of the characters are clever, cunning, scheming (either or good or bad) with one more character which is dumb but which has extremely noble intentions ?

Do we only need stereotypical great/smart/extremely good etc. etc. characters

Of course why not !
But all of that will depend upon the story line.

Forrest Gump, Koi mil gaya, IShwar all revolved around simpletons who were respected and loved because of their simplicity. Please note I used the word simplicity and not Dumbness.

Even comedies will love to have such characters. Remember Babuu bhai from Hera Pheri ?

However if it is action movie or say a thriller then dumb characters are not really appreciated.

BTW having one extremely noble or rather docile character with lack of judgement and farsightedness is also a stereotype on Indian television.

Firstly there are channels dedicated to such characters you talked of. Like Sab TV and Big Magic.
So it is not true that characters always have to be perfect.

Second, being intelligent does not mean one is cunning or not genuine. Being noble or genuine is not the reserve of only dumb or not so intelligent people. It is a stereotype that mainly not so intelligent people are good whereas intelligent are not.

Third, as Debs said, it depends on genre. In a battle, a crime/mystery based show such characters are not welcome. They can at best be side characters or comic relief but cannot hog the story because it ruins the pace and excitement of the game.

Lastly most shows have dumb characters only. I do not think we need to lobby for more dumb characters. Rather intelligent characters are rare and if a show shows them then they should be welcomed.

Finally after having faced consequences and having experience, after getting hints, even not so intelligent people start to learn a lesson and start becoming more vigilant. Nobody remains forever confused. Neither do viewers like to watch forever fuzzy people for days and months.

There can be dumb characters in saas bahu serials where their dumbness doesnt cause as much damage or endanger other's lives!
But dumb characters in a thriller like EHT serve no purpose and only slacken the pace and tightness of the plot and dumb down the thriller element of the show!
They also endanger the lives of others and obstruct the plans of more intelligent characters.

Precisely, these dumb characters, b/c of their dumbness cause problem to the person fighting for the cause itself. And this changes the story dynamics. This is what I meant. Durga's job would have to face a doubled edged sword. On one side, she has to counteract Goenkas' and another side she needs to protect Dev.

These kinds of things are pretty real. So, we can have a very different story. Different from viewing the dumb characters in a funny way as done in SAB channel. Different from having too dumb and mentally challenged as seen in load of movies. These characters are normal and lead normal life. They could lead a very very normal life, until faced with testing circumstances. Only when faced with challenging situations they are not able to scale up. Neither are they able to connect the dots. Further cause problem to the purpose.

If the topic is about Dev's character then he is hardly anywhere close to reality. With his skills he would have been dead by now.
Btw he is a super qualified man. Why cant we have good equal to smart for once?
why good amounts to stupid all the time?

So this thread was for Dev!😆
Well as per this show, Dev is Gold medalist, scholarship holder and graduated from a top US university.

So how is he dumb? Why and how is dumbness on his part, okay?

Secondly, experience teaches a lot even to dumb people. Whereas this guy did not learn from any incident?

Thirdly, why is intelligence not normal according to you? Is it abnormal or unrealistic to be intelligent? Is only dumbness and confusion normal?
To defend Dev you will now call intelligence as a not normal trait or say it is trait of bad people? Or good and normal people cannot be intelligent? What stereotype is this?😲

Fourth, sorry to disagree but Dev did not add anything to story. Only sidetracked it. Dragged it. Thanks to his ignorance Payal got attacked again. He did not add any unpredictability to story. Before you give TRP argument, let me remind you show is shutting down before time. Had hero or normal guy been a value addition then show wouldn't be shown door before time.

Fifth, it depends on genre. An eternally confused guy can at best be a side character or comic relief in a mystery and battle. Not hog the whole story. If you want very normal guys then I suggest you watch YRKKH where people are normal and discuss normal things like what to eat for dinner.

Lastly, Dev is not normal. Had he been normal, he would have been either not interested in justice. Or he would have died thanks to errors he made. No normal guy gets saved from death like he got. Normal guys do not live in vague memories of past, get saved by lockets, love a driver's daughter and hang around at driver's house or have driver's girl hanging about their bedroom. His story has its own far from reality elements.

Such character actually end up giving wrong info to the audience.
Good doesn't equal to bhola bhala.

Rich doesn't mean oblivion to the world outside

Love doesn't mean one will go blind to everything happening around him.

Good son doesn't mean obey mother's orders like patthar ki lakeer.

I have seen wise people who are so good at heart.
