Ramayana

He's the current favourite among the blue-eyed boys of television. Effectively carrying forward the salt 'n pepper look, Ram Kapoor is a show-stealer, says Gauri Kohli

From playing a lover boy to a middle-aged rich husband and now a flamboyant and ostentatious businessman, that's Ram Kapoor for you.

After Ronit Roy, who spearheaded a new breed of middle-aged salt 'n pepper heroes, Ram Kapoor has been superlative in carrying the baton forward. The trend has gained momentum since then. After all, romancing women half your age, that too with unmatched conviction, is no mean feat. And he has been doing it with elan as Jai Walia in Kasamh Se for four years. And now, the actor is at his best again - creating ripples - this time as JR Thakral in Kyunkii Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thhi.

Like every show on the small screen, Kyunkii too has had its share of highs and lows. As the Balaji camp struggled to manoeuvre its way through the storm post Smriti Irani's exit, the makers were busy trying to conjure up the unthinkable to win back those eyeballs.

In fact, after Ram's real life wife Gautami replaced Smriti Irani as Tulsi a month ago his entry into Kyunkii... was just a matter of time. Speculation was rife as to what character he would play in the serial. And then came another new role, this time too, it was Ekta's brainchild. She unveiled Ram's character, especially designed by Manish Malhotra, at an event recently.

Thakral is no ordinary character and his entry caused quite a stir in the show and is now influencing all other characters, including Tulsi. Going by the soap queen's version, it is "something that has not been tried on Indian television so far with the idea to break the clutter on TV."

Says the man himself: "More than men he trusts cats and his favourite colour is green. He is very intelligent and sharp, a kind of person who will not stand in a corner but will get noticed everywhere. However, his son is completely different from him."

No wonder, Ram is in love with his new, eccentricity. "The look is classy and very different and it's a drastic change for me as well. Thakral is an intense, stylish and peculiar man. And it's quite different from my role in Kasamh Se," he says.

Believe him, he had to lose 6 kg to play the character of Thakral. Ask him if the negative shades of his character bother him and he says "call it grey shades. Even Jai Walia of Kasamh Se is not a completely positive character. He is a combination of positive and negative shades. That's how people are in real life," he adds.

Most feel he's a combination of Jack Nicholson in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Al Pacino in The Devil's Advocate and Glenn Close in 101 Dalmatians. Another aspect that makes his character in Kyunkii more special is that it gives him a chance to work opposite his wife Gautami. The couple was last seen sharing screen space in Balaji's Ghar Ek Mandir years ago.

At a time when young heroes have taken a backseat, Ram is not scared to experiment with age: "I think that an actor needs to be professional in order to play any kind of role. I really do not find any logic when an actor says that he cannot play a father or grandfather. We are actors and cannot expect to play characters only of our age," he says. Off screen Ram is in his early 30s.

thanks for sharing...man i don't mind him going and doing other shows but it really sux and unfair for us viewers to endure this stupid story line and this stupid AD in the show and this stupid Durga...i hate it all! and not to mention no real JB scenes with the real Actors lately..the real ones don't even last for long time...i hate how RK's absence is really destroying Kasam Se...i guess Zee is planning to take Kasam Se out soon it seems...(not confirmed news, it is mere guess at my part from the looks of TRP's and show)
seriously we really need SS back in the show, he is the only to save this show now!
i really hate it! this revenge is not even a revenge track! UGH!

Thanks again for yet another awesome article Anishma 👍🏼

I only saw Mr Ram Kapoor as Thukral in Kyunki and I'll be totally honest and say that I was pleasently surprised by the performance. I was never really too much of an RK fan, but after seeing what he was able to do with Thukral, I'd be lying if I was to say that I'm not a bit of a fan now 😊 (If my dear sisters Sanju and Preet read this then I'm sure that they will be pleased and therefore will not whup me! 😆 )

The thing is that I never really imagined RK playing an unconventional character like that... the cool thing about eccentric characters is that writers can do so much with them... they give great potential for stories. Thukral seems to be a very well written character and along with the fantastic job that RK is doing, I think that it could give Kyunki something good to look forward to.

It's a well written character and I suppose that's why RK is clearly having a great time with Thukral. I'll admit that when I heard about the character I wasn't too hopeful... but seeing the guy in action was kinda cool.

But despite my praise for the guy, one thing I have to say is that I really do not like the shiney green clothes... I'll admit that I'm not at all into fashion, but shiney green is disturbing (but that's RK's fault - it's that designer dude who needs to be whupped for that!).

I saw a scene where Thukral puts his little cat to sleep... and I'll admit that it was kinda heart warming. I never ever react to TV because I know that it's fictional... but the way RK played the scene out, it made me smiled and say "awww... that's nice brother" 😊

And also, the fact that he is 6kg lighter is excellent! RK should have done that a long time ago... but the thing is that he can still lose even more than that and if he can, then I'm 100,000% sure that he'll be even better! 👍🏼

Anyways, let's hope that the writers come up with something cool for RK's Walia character also, so that he can start enjoying playing that role once again.

God bless.

Thanks for posting the article. 😊

But I wonder do they cross-check before writing and printing stuff? KS is running for 4 years???? 😲

And to think of it that these reporters actually get paid for writing these stuff? Just sheer wastage.

As for RK, its a welcome change for him.But he should realise that KS needs him more than Kyunki ... since the latter show is always gonna be Tulsi's, no matter what!

Anyways best of luck to him.
