I am not sure if I interpreted it right.. But I think that Arnav and Khushi are soul mates and Arnav's soul has kept company for Khushi subconsciously until it was time that khushi met the real Arnav..

you could say that they share a close friendship. Arnav was whom khushi found solace with, her imaginary friend. well, this is what i had in my mind while writing it...

but the idea of being soul mates doesn't sound odd either, its upto the reader on how he/she interprets the story!😉
