Anurag Basu's love story

He is known for the way he presents love onscreen with great passion. And the inspiration behind that passionate presentation might just be director Anurag Basu's own love life.
Anurag met his wife Tani while he was working on a documentary film in Guwahati, Assam, a couple of years ago. Tani was Anurag's boss, but it was at dinner at a five star restaurant that Anurag first took notice of her.
The story goes like this — at this official dinner, the table was formally laid and the restaurant was packed with foreign delegates and the who's who of the industry. Being a true Bengali at heart, Anurag was really excited when he heard that fish was on the menu. But like most Indians, eating fish with a fork and a knife was quite a task for him.
At that point, he saw Tani savouring her meal in true Bengali style — she was eating with her hands. Anurag thought that it was pretty brave of her, considering they were surrounded by an elite crowd. He sat beside her and started eating with his hands too. That was the first time he talked to Tani and three days later he had kissed her.
It wasn't all smooth sailing after that. Their parents were not in favour of their relationship. But Anurag insists that Tani was the protector of the relationship. It was Tani's patience and open-mindedness that strengthened their bond, he says. Had it not been for her, the relationship would not have endured. The terrace scene of Murder was inspired from this real-life story. Even today, Anurag considers Tani his biggest critic, and it is very important for her to approve his projects before he takes them up.
