Chapter 2

As Pragya proceeded towards home, she was unaware of her surroundings; any person looking at her on the road could make that out. The memory of her mother's bedroom where once Abhi and Pragya were playfully fighting with each other before the corporator arrived seemed like it belonged to the distant past. Suddenly with the relief came the sudden weight of the enormous exhaustion building in her ever since the fateful moment the corporator stepped into her house the night before. Ever since then she didn't have a moments rest. She was completely used up now. Even the curiosity of knowing how Abhi came back home so easily could wait till next morning. It felt like she wasn't guiding her feet home, her feet her guiding her home.

And suddenly it happened. It took her a moment to understand that someone had made dash with her purse. Instinctively she followed the man screaming for help. Even though almost desolated, a few men did come to her help, they ran behind the man but he was too fast for them, the thief threw the purse back at the men and made a dash for it. Having recovered the purse the other men probed no further behind the thief and returned Pragya her purse. Thank-God this was a small incident, she didn't have what it takes to chase again.

Having recovered from her adrenaline rush, Pragya was suddenly wide awake and slightly shaken. She managed to take a local transport and finally reached where her Abhi was.

Mehra Mansion

Anyone else would feel like they are at the top of the world when they enter a palatial mansion like the Mehra mansion. It was grand and exquisite. Every item on display, the lighting, the silk curtain, the mantles and even the frames reeked of sophistication and class. But for Pragya, the very same grandeur was intimidating. It was always the same, every time she entered the house, it seemed to belittle her, absorb her into its vast emptiness. When she married into the household, she thought to herself that out of habit, this is likely to go away, but it never did. Perhaps it was this reason that when she entered the great hall, her face showed meekness. But for the people sitting inside the hall awaiting her, this expression meant something completely different.

There were more people than usual in the hall, she thought to herself. Well her Abhi was back, everyone was happy and spending an evening together, that will be the reason she thought. Then she noticed Sarla ma, Bulbul, Purvi and Daadi too. Did they come to thank Abhi again? Her eyes automatically scanned throughout the hall and everybody seemed to be there. She kept scanning till her eyes hovered over what they were looking for - Abhi. Unscathed and undisturbed sitting on the arm rest of his Daadi's couch. This man will never learn manners. Why can't he just sit on the next couch like a well-mannered person? - thought Pragya to herself and adored the behaviour at the same time. But something was missing. She focused on Abhi's eyes, she never felt love there, but she had seen fun, frolic, sadness, even care there, but what was dominating about those eyes were the comfort it reflected, it was because of this, Pragya had so well mingled with Abhi's topsy turvy world. That was missing today. What replaced that was cold opaqueness. It felt like Abhi had barred himself from her and how much ever she tried, he will not be able to see through. Slowly it hit her - something is wrong. If they were celebrating his return, why was the hall full of people so eerily quiet? No chirpy voices laughing loudly or calling out to her. All eyes were on her now. Sarla ma had a lot of questions in her eyes, Bulbul had tears, Aaliya had a smirk, Tanu looked dazed and then she looked at Abhi's dadi - she looked severely pained.

She involuntarily walked towards daadi to enquire what was wrong when daadi motioned her to stop with her hand. She stopped dead on the track, nervously glancing at Abhi - what was going on? Why was daadi upset with her? It was Sarla ma who broke the silence.

SM - Pragya tune Abhi ke khilaf jhooti statement kyun likhwai? Kyun uss corporator ke tarafdari ki police station mein? Jawab de tu mujhe.

Relive shot through Pragya, it was like somebody had applied balm to her aching muscles. In the happiness of his home-coming, Pragya had forgotten about the statement she had given. This one she could explain right now and all will be fine.

P - Ma woh baat yeh hua ki...

Aaliya - ki tum lalchi ho gayi..laga agar bhai jail ke andar reh jae kuch aur din toh tum aish aur aaram ki zindagi ji sakti ho..kyunki bhai nai hoga toh kaun tumhe mere mandap se Purab ko bhagane le liye sunaega? Aur bhai ke absence mein tum Purab aur Bulbul ki shaadi bhi karadoge, jo ki kafi din se pending bhi hain. Hain nah bhabi? Isiliye galat statement diya tha nah? Aur jab laga statement kafi nahin hoga? Mujhse signature leke mere hi bhai ke paiso se tumne police ko rishwat di? Ki rockstar Abhi ko jail se jaldi mat nikalo? Aur itna hi nahin, Akash ko bhi manipulate karne ke koshish ki? Uske apne bhai ki against? Aap apne aap ko samajte kya hain bhabi? Itna neeche gir jaoge aap, yeh maine life mein kabhi nai socha tha.

P - Lekin Aaliya, maine aisa kuch nai kiya. Tum ek minute suno toh mere baat.

Aaliya - Humein kuch nahin...

Daadi - Ruko Aaliya, isse kehne do isko kya kehna hain.

P - Daadi...main sach bol rahi hu, maine koi plan nahin banaya tha Purab aur Bulbul ke shaadi karane ki. Daadi maine police ko bhi koi rishwat nahin diya hain

Abhi - Bhas chashmish aur jhoot mat bolo, tumhara sach sabke samne hain

P - Abhi par main jhoot nai bol rahin hoon. Mera vishwas karo...

Abhi - Acha? Toh phir yeh batao. Tumne police station mein apna statement badla tha?

P - Haan..lekin"

A - Tumne Aaliya se fitty lacs withdraw karwae the, who bhi koi reason ke begair?

P - Haan...par woh toh"

A - Tumne Akash ko text message kiya tha mujhe jail se jaldi na nikalwane ke liye?

P - Haan kiya tha par uske reason yeh tha ki -

Aaliya - Iske baad bhi tumko koi aur explanation dena baki hai? Tumne sabke samne sab galti qubool ki aur ab bhi kuch bolna baki hai?

Sarla ma comes to Pragya, if she was weeping until now, seeing her mother come to her, she started howling before her. But her mother's face was stiff. There was no maternal affection there. Pragya saw it in her eyes, she will not believe her now. She whimpered and before any word beyond Ma' came out of her mouth Sarla ma landed a slap on her left cheek. Instinctively her palm reached her cheeks and she forgot to cry, her face was expressionless, she was numb once more, incapacitated by her mother's lack of trust in her.

Sarla ma - tune aisa kyun kiya? Abhi ne kaunsi kami rakhi thi humare khayal rakhne mein bol? Bol? Bolti kyun nahin? Yeh seekh di thi tujhe humne? Mujhe aaj kehne mein sharam aati hain kit u humari Pragya hain..(sarla ma continues to weep)

Pragya knew it was a lost battle, even if she clarified it won't be able to help her prove innocent. She slowly turned around and faced Abhi. She saw disgust in his eyes for her. She felt dirty. She felt shallow. No - she has to try and explain this to him one last time. He needs to know. If not for her sake, for his own safety he needs to know. What if the man tries his extortion trick again?

P - Abhi, please tum suno meri baat, ek bar toh sun lo..

Abhi was standing like a stone statue, it was impossible to look at his face and tell what he was thinking. Was he even thinking? Does he think his Pragya has cheated on him? Again? Another misunderstanding? He was silent and looked distant. Pragya grasped the opportunity to tell her story...

There was silence after Pragya finished her story. Then softly she heard Abhi break the silence.

Abhi - So tumne paise uss extortion caller ko diya tha?

P - Haan maine use diya tha

A - Phir yeh kaise ho sakta hain ki wahi notes jo Aaliya ne tumko diya tha, wahi serial number ke notes uss police officer ne humko diya aur bola ki tunme usko rishwat dene ki koshish ki? Kya tum bolna chahte ho ki tumahara caller woh notes lekar police ko diya tha? Yay eh kehna chahti ho ki ek police officer ne tumaher upar jhoota arop lagaya?

P - Abhi main sach bol rahi hu, mujhe nahin pata woh notes unke paas kaise pohoche ya who officer kyun keh raha hai ki maine unko rishwat di hain

Aaliya - Acha maan lete hai koi extortion calls aye the..kahan aye the? Hum mein se kisine to aisi calls receive nahin kiya! Akash tumne koi extortion calls receive kiya hai bhai ke liye?

Akash - No Aaliya maine koi call receive nahin kiya.

P - Haan kyunki calls mere mobile pe aya tha..ek minute main dikhati hoon, call aya tha.

Pragya opened her bag and started to skim through her things fast, to search for her phone but in vain. It wasn't there. She remembered the pick pocket that had happened on her way home. She stopped. She realized she will not find her mobile inside her bag how much ever she searched. Pragya slowly turned to face Aaliya who was towering in front of her blocking her view of the rest of the people in the hall. She was facing her, almost cornering her. Even while the words escaped her mouth, she knew she could convince no one. She mumbled about the phone being stolen and raised her eyes to look at Aaliya.

Then she saw it all. Aaliya was broadly grinning at her with her (Aaliya's) back towards the family. No one saw her evil grin. But Pragya realized - all this was a plot. It was Aaliya's, Tanu's and her Abhi's plot. The statement reeled in her mind. "Behenji ko jaldi ghar se bahar karna hoga".

Suddenly Pragya felt defeated. She no-longer felt the need to validate her chastity. It didn't matter. This is what Abhi always wanted - to throw her out of his life in such a way that daadi never faltered in her affection for him. This was his plan. This is why he came to save Kumkum Bhagya Marriage Hall. He hadn't come there out of compassion or affection. How could she even think that was his reason? After all he was Abhi the rockstar -he sold love so convincingly to people through his music. He sold love for money, how did she forget that?

Slowly she walked towards Sarla ma. Her time with Abhi was up. Daadi wouldn't stop her today. She was too hurt herself. And now there was no more reason to stay. It was over.

P - Chalo ma..hum chalte hain yahan se

Sarla ma - Kahan?

P - Ghar ma, humara ghar

SM - Who mera ghar hain, tumhara nahin. Agar Bulbul ke galti ke wajah se main use apna ne se mana kar sakti hu, tumko kyun lagta hain main tumko apna lungi itni gandi harkat ke baad

Sarla turns to Daadi and tells her that since Mehra mansion was Pragya's real home, she will leave the decision on to her. Daadi can decide how she wants to deal with Pragya

SM - Pragya, tu ne mujhe itna sharminda kiya hain, ki aaj se main bhul jaungi ki tere saath mera koi rishta hai

Bulbul tries coaxing her mother into taking Pragya with them. Sarla ma refuses and they leave.

Pragya had no idea what she was doing. She was lost in her own thoughts. Flashes of the evening, the treachery and the perfect plan flashed in her mind. Tears rolled down her cheeks as she started walking towards the door. Daadi called out her name. She slowly turned around to face daadi with no clue regarding what she might say to her.

Daadi - Pragya, mujhe nahin pata ki tumne aisa kyun kiya. Kaunsi kami reh gayi thi mere Abhi ke pyaar mein. Tum iss ghar mein reh sakti ho agar tum chaho toh. Main ya Abhi tumhe nahin rokenge.
Aaliya - Lekin Daadi.."

Daadi - Bhas Aaliya tum iss mein kuch nahin bologi. Haan Pragya, jaise main tumhe rehne se nahin rokungi, main tumhe is ghar chodke jaane se bhi nahin rokungi. Tum aur Abhi aapas mein samajh lo tumko kya karni hai. Bhas.

All of them leave the hall.

Pragya enters Abhi's bedroom. Abhi is on his bed; he turns around sees her and again turns on his back. He ignores her. Pragya doesn't notice Abhi there; she is lost in her world. She always knew she will have to leave this house one day, but she also knew if she left this house she will be going back to her beloved mother's house. Today that certainty doesn't remain, she knows she cannot go to her mothers'too. Pragya knows after what Abhi did, she will not stay here. His mission was accomplished. She couldn't serve him anymore. She had to leave, but where will she go? For the first time she saw the magnanimity of the situation as shivers ran down her spine. She sat their silently crying at her fate, at the vast stretch of darkness that lay ahead.

A dark silhouette of a delicate woman with a very small frame could be seen in the liquid moonlight at late hours that night - walking out of Mehra mansion. She just had a purse in her hand while she walked into the night, nothing else. Slowly the darkness engulfed her and she couldn't be seen anymore.
