I think people have different tastes, so its obviously hard to answer the question. We also have to understand that certain movies carry weight, budget, and stardom. Queen for example became a hit not because it hit the 100cr mark, but because it surpassed its budget. If a film had a 200 cr budget and only made 150 cr its still a flop. Atleast this is the way I see it. Another thing is how crazy people are about the stars, SRK, SALMAN just have sooo many fans, they are going to watch regardless of how flop the actual storyline is.
But apart from all of the money talk, for me I go by word of mouth, or my personal judgement. I wouldn't watch Kick, but I might watch bang bang. It just depends on preference. But I definitely will watch Haider, because appreciate shakespeare and Hamlet, when making it VB probably knew it wouldn't hit 100 cr mark, regardless it might go down in history as a great movie.
It just depends... Masala movies are more fun on the big screen, vs some movies are better watched alone to ponder about...some have great cinematography like Highway and are amazing on big screen, but just because people thought it was going to be "weird" before seeing it, people decided not to go. It was such a good story. Audiences confuse me, this whole BW system of measuring a good movie confuses me utterly, so don't feel bad I am on the same boat.
