Chapter 29:
Rachna was very excited to know what her surprise was. But before she could leave her room to go downstairs, Shail asked her to change her dress. Going towards Rachna's cupboard, Shail took out a gorgeous lehnga for Rachna to wear.
"Rachna, I want you to look just perfect for this special day. So please get ready in this dress and then come downstairs into the living room."
Shail handed Rachna the lehnga and left the room so her daughter could ready. Rachna was confused as to why her mother wanted her to change into this outfit, but nonetheless she got ready quickly and went downstairs.
When she walked into the living room, as she had been instructed to do by her mother, Rachna was amazed to see the entire room decorated with lights and flowers. She could not figure out what was going on and the oddest part of the situation was that she couldn't find any of her family members.
A rain of fresh, fragrant rose petals surprised her. She looked up to see the source of the flowers, but she could not spot anything besides a basket. Suddenly a pair of hands covered her eyes and guided her into a chair.
"Who is this? And what's going on?"
Rachna only heard giggling in response to her questions. But the hands covering her eyes felt oddly familiar...but no, they couldn't be...could they?
"Kabir? Is that you?"
The hands came off of her eyes and she found Kabir standing in front of her, looking smashingly hot in a black kurta.
"Kabir? What is all this? I mean...you're here like this. What's going on?"
Shail and Dayal walked into the room along with dadi.
Shail smiled. "Rachna beta, this is your surprise. Today is your shagun ceremony."
"Shagun? But I don't understand...how did you all know about us...I mean Kabir and I? I just told you about it a little while ago mummy...so how did you plan all this?"
Everyone smiled brightly and laughed, bursting with the secret that they had been keeping for the past few days.
It was Kabir who spoke then. "I guess I should come clean now Rachna. After I proposed to you, I informed dadi about everything that happened and she planned this whole surprise for us."
Rachna was stunned; her eyes filled with tears of hurt. "Wait, so everyone knows about what happened in London? You broke your promise and told everyone? I can't believe you Kabir..."
Nobody had been expecting this reaction from Rachna. Shail placed a comforting hand on her daughter's shoulder.
"Rachna beta, you have been truthful with me today so I also want to be honest with you. Before you and Kabir left for London, Kabir informed your papa and I of everything...that you were going to meet Rajiv, not to attend a conference. Kabir also expressed his true feelings as well his intention to marry you. He was very clear though that he wouldn't take any steps until you yourself were emotionally ready. He made us promise not to reveal anything to you. Rachna beta, Kabir loves you a lot and we can see that he is the perfect person to be your life partner."
Rachna was shocked to find out that her parents had known the truth behind the trip to London all along. Kabir held Rachna's hand.
"Rachna, I'm sorry for not keeping my promise to you. I know I had said that I wouldn't tell anyone the real reason behind why we were going to London, but I couldn't lie to your parents Rachna. My conscience wouldn't allow me to do so. I hope you can understand why I did what I did."
She looked up at Kabir's face. He truly seemed to be sorry for breaking her trust...his eyes said it all. Rachna squeezed Kabir's hand reassuringly and smiled.
"It's ok. I guess in a way it's good that mummy and papa knew the truth...it makes our life much easier now."
Everyone became relieved to hear Rachna say that. Dadi moved towards the lovely couple and blessed them.
"May God bless you with all the happiness that you two deserve. So, should we start the shagun ceremony?"
Rachna and Kabir take their seats together on a beautifully arranged sofa.
Dadi starts the shagun ritual by covering Rachna's head with a red dupatta and gifting her some clothes and jewelry along with other auspicious pooja items. Shail and Dayal then do the rituals with Kabir. They put a red tikka on his head with kumkum and gift him with clothes, fruits, and cash. Once the rituals are finished, Kabir and Rachna take the blessings of all their elders by touching their feet.
After the shagun ceremony has been completed, everyone moves into the dining room to eat dinner. Kabir is sitting across the table from Rachna. The two lovebirds are so lost in each other's eyes that they don't even hear their marriage plans being discussed. It is only when Gunjan bumps Rachna's shoulder that both Rachna and Kabir break their romantic gaze.
"Ok so it's decided then, we will go to the temple tomorrow and ask pandit ji to finalize a date for the wedding." Dadi smiles excitedly and the rest of the family agrees with her.
After everyone has finished with dinner, dadi sits with all the adults to discuss wedding plans, while Rachna, Kabir, Mayank and Gunjan go outside for a moonlit stroll in the park.
Mayank and Gunjan decide to walk around, while Rachna and Kabir sit together on the bench.
"I hope you're not mad at me Rachna."
Rachna looks towards Kabir, puzzled by his statement. "Why would I be mad Kabir? You did the right thing...and it worked out for us in the end, didn't it?"
He smiled and took her hand in his. "Yes...I guess it did. I love you Rachna Rasna."
Rachna blushed. She still couldn't believe how lucky she was to have found love in the form of her best friend. It seemed just like a fairytale...a dream come true. The prince charming that she had been dreaming of all her life had been right in front of her all along...

Chapter 30:
Everyone sat down in the living room and Shail brought water for them all. The entire Garg family had gone to the temple with dadi and Kabir to finalize a date for the wedding. Unfortunately, the priest had said that no good date was available for the next eight months. They had agreed to have the wedding eight months from now, but the family was not happy about having to wait so long for the marriage. Meanwhile, the bride and groom themselves were quite happy with the turn of events, as an eight month delay for the wedding would give them ample to spend with each other as an engaged couple.
------------
Rachna came downstairs the next morning, ready for work, dressed in a casual navy blue kurti with jeans.
After a quick breakfast, she left for the office with Mayank, who had insisted to drop her that morning.
"Thanks for dropping me off bhaiyya! Do you want to come inside and say hi to Kabir?"
"It's no problem Rachna. And I'll come in some other day. I actually have a meeting to attend in a little bit so I don't want to get late."
"Okay, it's fine then. You go on. I'll see you at dinner tonight. Bye!"
Waving good bye to Mayank, Rachna walked into the office, humming a cheerful tune that had been stuck in her head for the past few days.
Soyi Soyi Palkon Pe Chal Ke [Walking on my sleeping lashes]
Meri Sapno Ki Khidki Pe Aa Gaya [He came into my window of dreams]
Aate Jaate Phir Mere Dil Ke [Coming and going again into my heart]
Inn Haathon Mein Woh Khat Pakda Gaya [He handed me letter of love]
Pyaar ka... [Of love]
Lafzon mein rang hai pyaar ka [In his words are colors of love]
Bahara bahara [It's springing, it's springing]
Hua dil pehli baar ve [It's happened with my heart for the first time]
Bahara bahara [It's springing, it's springing]
Ki chain to hua faraar ve [The peace of my mine has vanished now]
As she was walking into the workshop, Rachna bumped into Nitya. Her face immediately broke into a smile and she hugged her dear friend, seeing her after so long.
"Hi Nitya! How have you been?"
"I'm good Rachna. How are you? My oh my it seems that these two weeks away from Benaras have done you too good. You have an unexplainable glow on your face. So out with it...what's the secret?"
Rachna merely shook her head and giggled as a deep rosy blush came over her cheeks.
"Nothing like that. Come on let's go in. There's probably so much work that I have to catch up on."
"Oh come on Rachna! Don't be such a drama queen. Tell me what you're hiding. I mean it can't be such a coincidence that you and KT both went on a holiday at the same time and returned together also. And he seems to have the same happiness on his face as you."
Rachna just walked into the workshop with Nitya trailing in behind her. Suddenly Nitya grabbed Rachna's hand and screamed in a high pitch.
"OMG! You're engaged! You and KT are engaged! Are you serious? How long was this going on? No more secrets Rachna...you have a lot of explaining to do!"
Nitya's outburst had caught the attention of all the other girls, who flocked around Rachna eager to get a glimpse of her ring and hear about the surprise engagement. Rachna merely blushed and looked down, embarrassed by all this attention from her colleagues. Thankfully Kabir walked into the workshop at the moment and everyone scattered back to their workstations quickly after seeing his stern expression. Nitya however had known KT for a long time and she was also very good friends with him, so she immediately moved towards KT and asked him about the engagement.
"KT! You're quite the secretive person hunh? You didn't even let anyone know that you and Rachna were seeing each other! You just surprised us all by getting engaged! Anyways, congratulations! I'm really happy for you two."
Nitya hugged KT to congratulate him. Kabir smiled seeing Nitya's excitement. He was genuinely touched by her wishes.
"Thanks Nitya. It was kind of unplanned for us too, but I guess it was meant to be. Anyways, let's get back to work now. There's a lot that I need to catch up on now that I've been away for two weeks. Come onto my office and let's discuss that project that we are doing with Mr. Khanna."
Nitya quickly went to gather the files and materials for the respective project. Meanwhile, Kabir gestured Rachna to follow him and she graciously obliged. Entering the cabin, Kabir turned towards Rachna and smiled at her. He had her sit down in his chair while he walked towards the cupboard to get something. He returned in a few moments with a notepad and a manila envelope filled with what appeared to be cards. Placing these two things in front of her, he handed her a pen.
"Dadi's orders. We have to select the design for the wedding cards and also pen down a guest list. So I figured that you could start on that task while I handle some office work."
Rachna sighed. "Oh gosh! I was so happy that we would have eight months to plan the wedding but now I guess even that much time seems to be too little. Well, I better get started."
Rachna began to look at the wedding card samples, while Kabir turned his attention towards the designs that Nitya had just walked in with. They worked like this until lunch time, when Rachna forcibly dragged Kabir away from the workshop to eat. After a quick lunch, Kabir went back to working on some sketches, while Rachna replied to some email inquiries about pending orders. The next three weeks were spent much like this, with Rachna coming into the office every morning and doing some wedding planning until lunch and office work in the afternoon. Meanwhile Kabir was so overwhelmed with projects that he had no time to even see Rachna, let alone help her with the wedding preparations. Rachna looked forward to the weekend more than ever before, feeling eager to finally spend some time with Kabir.
----------------
She walked into Kabir's house mid-morning on Saturday with a basket in tow. She had planned an impromptu picnic date with her fiance and she was determined to pull him away from his work for a few hours. She marched into his room authoritatively and announced her plans to him.
"Kabir, grab your car keys and let's go."
Kabir looked up from his laptop, clearly taken aback by Rachna's sudden arrival. "Rachna? How come you're here right now? And go? Go where?"
She placed the picnic basket down on the ground and brought her hands to her hips. "Mr. Tripathi. You are going to close that laptop right now and we are going to go and spend some quality time together. I will hear no excuses from you so you better hurry up and get your keys."
Dadi walked in seeing Rachna in Kabir's room and she laughed. "Very nice Rachna beta. Thank god that you are here to finally pull him away from the laptop. He has been glued to it since last night. I don't even know if he slept at all."
"Don't worry dadi, he has no choice but to listen to me at the moment. Right Kabir?"
Rachna smiled brightly as she waited for Kabir to make a move. He reluctantly closed his laptop and got his car keys. "As you wish your highness. Your wish is my command."
Dadi laughed as she waved goodbye to the couple. Once they had left, she folded her hands and thought aloud. "Oh God. Please keep them happy like this. May no one cast an evil eye on them."
--------------------
Kabir and Rachna enjoyed a relaxing picnic by the ghats. Rachna had packed all of Kabir's favorite foods - pasta salad, tomato and cheese panninis, watermelon, and chocolate cake for dessert. As they finished up their lunch, Kabir took Rachna's hand in his.
"Thanks for this Rachna. I really needed it."
Rachna smile smugly. "I know."
Kabir looked up at the clear, blue sky and took a deep breath. "Rachna I know its tough for you to handle all the wedding preparations by yourself, and I really wish I could help, but it's just that I have so many new projects to take care of that I just can't seem to find any free time nowadays."
Rachna squeezed Kabir's hand reassuringly. "It's okay Kabir. I can understand. Taking such a long vacation has piled up so much work for you. Don't worry about it...I'll handle everything for now and you can help me once you are freed up a little."
"I love you so much!"
Rachna giggled shyly. "Love you too!"
------------------
They soon packed up all their stuff and headed back home. Once they had packed all the stuff into the car, Kabir realized that his phone was not in his pocket. He assumed that it must have fallen out where they had been sitting.
"Rachna, just wait here. I think I dropped my phone. I'll just go and get it."
"You want me to come with you?"
"No no, I'll just quickly go find it. I'll be right back."
As Kabir went to find his phone, Rachna stood near the car waiting for him to return. Just as she spotted Kabir coming back towards her, a black van pulled up behind her. Someone threw a black sack over her head, pulled her into the van and immediately drove off. Kabir saw all this from a distance and ran towards Rachna to save her, but he was too late. By the time he reached the car, the van had driven off, leaving only a cloud of dust behind. Kabir frantically got in his own car and drove off in the direction that he had seen the black van go, but after driving for a few kilometers, he realized that it was no use. Trying to call Rachna's phone, he heard a ringtone coming from the backseat. Realizing that Rachna's phone was in the picnic basket, Kabir quickly called Mayank and explained the situation to him.
"What! Okay, okay calm down! You get to the police station and I'll also reach there soon. Don't worry we'll find her!"
