Small budgets are often the key to quick success in Bollywood. And Khoobsurat, Anil Kapoor's latest co-production to boost daughter Sonam's stagnant career, has proved as much.

The film, made on a frugal budget of Rs 12 crore, has grossed Rs 34.36 crore worldwide since its release on September 19.

The film had a significantly slow opening with only 15 per cent occupancy and barely managed to make Rs 2.7 crore on its first day.

The opening weekend's collection was a paltry Rs 11.53 crore.

However, it soon started drawing a crowd.

The low cost of production has meant that the film - jointly produced by Sonam's father Anil and sister Rhea in association with Disney - has brought profits for all parties.

Khoobsurat released across 800 domestic screens, besides 300 screens overseas in 18 territories including the US, the UK and Pakistan.

Its global gross stood at around Rs 12.30 crore till Thursday.

The producers ensured the Khoobsurat was released in Pakistan as the film's hero, Fawad Khan, is a popular star there.

One advantage that Khoobsurat gained was Daawat-e-Ishq's not-so-spectacular opening at the Box Office.

The Yash Raj Production film featuring Parineeti Chopra and Aditya Roy Kapoor that opened on the same day, is another small-budget movie banking on some quick returns.

Another plus point was the failed impact of a string of films such as Desi Kattey, Balwinder Singh Famous Ho Gaya, 3 AM and Chaarfutiya Chhokare that were released last Friday.

Only 300 screens overseas and yet its collections are higher than lots of other films overseas. I wonder what our primarily overseas members have to say to that?😛

Please bolo yeh jhooth hai, aisa nahi ho sakta. Just not possible. So many wise predictions cant be false and its not possible that big big sars film just cant be behind Ikaun and If Superstar ki movie.

Flop queen ke kitty mai aur ek flop. Ad. budget itself should be more than 10 crore and with all those songs etc. budget should be more than 25 crore.

when we barge about less number of screens than it is not about scale it is about capacity. When this much screen audience capacity is less than 20 % than imagine in higher number of screen even multiplex may not recover variable cost 😆

Box office: Desi Kattey collects Rs 1.5 crore

Last week's releases have had a dismal run at the box office. It may be pointed out that more than half a dozen films had released last week, including Desi Kattey, 3AM, Chaarfutiya Chhokare, Mainu Ek Ladki Chahiye, Balwinder Singh Famous Ho Gaya and Dear Vs Bear.

Vishal Anand of Fun Cinemas says, "Last week clocked one of the lowest collections in this financial year. Out of the films that had released, Khoobsurat and Daawat-e-Ishq led the pack while Desi Kattey, Chaarfutiya Chhokare and 3AM couldn't make any impact due to the fractured mandate and content quality."

Exhibitor Rajesh Thadani says that the total collection posted by seven films that released last week has merely crossed Rs 4 crore. "The highest grosser among them so far is Desi Kattey which collected around Rs 1.5 crore, while 3AM made around Rs 1.24 crore. The remaining films have earned just a few lakhs. In fact, many cinemas cancelled their shows due to lack of audiences," he says.

Trade analyst Komal Nahata says that each release is a bigger disaster than the other. "All eyes are now on Bang Bang and Haider that will take on each other this week." Thadani adds that Khoobsurat did better than Daawat-e-Ishq last week. "Yet its collection was far below our expectations,'' he says. The total collection of Khoobsurat stands at Rs 21.85 crore whereas Daawat-e-Ishq has collected Rs 24.6 crore so far.

12cr is the production only if you add promotion and marketing plus all other costs it will be more than 30 cr. The so called honest and straight forward Sonam is hiding the real figures so desperate to get a hit
