Chapter 5

Shiv had gone to drop Ananya at school and had to return home to take care of his wife. It had been an hour since Shiv had dropped Ananya at school. She had called up Anandi and told her one more time to listen to her papa as she had lost the bet. Shiv was supposed to be home half an hour ago but there was no sign of him. Anandi stood at the window waiting for him to return. It was raining heavily. She must have tried calling him at least 50 times but he did not answer the call. Tears were flowing down Anandi's cheeks as she was worried about Shiv. She once again called him up but he did not answer. "Kaka." She called the driver and asked him to get the car ready. Anandi went out in search of Shiv. She looked at both sides of the roads looking out for him but he was not there and there was no sign of his car. The car entered the school compound and Anandi smiled on seeing Shiv's car there. She had been worried sick for him and also angry at him for not answering his calls but then she realized that he must have sat outside Ananya's school like she had on her first day. She got out of the car and went to Shiv's car. She opened the door and sat inside. What she saw shocked her...

The sight of him scared her. She had always seen him as the masked man. Was this the real Shiv? She wondered. He was perspiring even with the AC being on full blast. His clothes were wet. He was holding on the steering wheel and just staring at the rain outside. He had the same look on his face a deer has when it sees the headlights of a speeding car. He had frozen. Tears were flowing down his scared eyes. She gently put her hand on his shoulder. "Shiv." He did not respond to her. She tried to make him leave the steering wheel but his hold was too tight as if super glue had spilled in between. She wiped the sweat from his forehead. She cupped his face and made him look at her. When he saw her in the passenger seat he began to behave like a mad man. "What are you doing here? Who told you to get into my car? Get out. Get out! Get out!!" He yelled. "Shiv kya hua? You were supposed to be at home an hour ago. What are you doing here? Shiv please tell me." He was now not only scared but also furious. "Who the hell are you to ask me any questions? I have given you a place in my home not in my life. You have no rights to ask me anything. Get out of my car right now." Shiv opened the passenger side door and he told her to get out of his car and never again dare to get in the car with him.

Anandi got out of the car and sat in hers. She did not leave. She kept a look out for Shiv in case he needed anything in case he needed her. Her phone rang. It was Ira. "Hello..." "Anandi where are you? You were supposed to rest na." "Ma wo...wo Shiv he had not come home toh I came to look for him." "Anandi beta you should know him by now. Annaya ko school drop karke he must have gone to the office. And what is there to cry for if he went to the office? It is better that he is there right now." Anandi began to cry. "He is not at the office. He is in the car parked outside Ananya's school. Ma I sat in the car toh..." Anandi heard a thud. Irawati collapsed on the chair. She had pain in her voice. "Anandi beta come home. Leave him alone. Come home." "How do I leave him alone ma that too abhi when he is..." "Anandi beta listen to me you have to leave him alone right now. He will be fine as soon as..." "As soon as kya ma?" "Anandi beta trust me you will not be able to reach him right now even if you try to. She did not want to leave Shiv alone there in that condition but she also had to follow his and Ananya's instructions. She could not hurt him more than he was now. It had stopped raining.

The moment the last of the rain drops had fallen. She saw the driver's side door of the car open. Shiv stepped out of the car. He looked around. He did not see Anandi's car because she had asked the driver to park in a way that Shiv could not spot it. She looked at Shiv and he was like nothing had happened. She could not understand his behavior. He was fine and so Anandi asked the driver to take her home. When she reached home she saw that Ira was pacing in the front garden. When she saw Anandi she rushed to her. "Anandi Shiv he is fine now right? You left from there only after making sure he was fine?" Anandi put her hand on Ira's hand. "Ma he is fine. It was like nothing had happened to him. I left only after making sure that he was ok." Irawati and Anandi came inside the house. "I will get something for you to eat. Rest karo beta." "Ma..." Irawati did not wait for Anandi to ask her anything. Anandi came to her room and lied down. Irawati came with food. She was not meeting with Anandi's eyes. She was about to leave when Anandi caught her hand. "Ma..." "Anandi the things you want to ask me it will be better if you speak with Shiv about it. He needs to talk about it. You need to hear it from him." She left and Anandi lay there on the bed thinking about Shiv.

"Mamma mamma." Ananya came home from school. She ran to her room to meet her mamma. Shiv went to his room to freshen up. "Mamma I am sorry." "Why?" "Mamma can I do nai nai in my bathroom? Papa does not have shower and you know na I Ananya loves shower mein nai nai it is like it is raining." Anandi was lost in thoughts. She did not reply to Ananya. Ananya shook her. "Mamma give me an answer na. Can I do nai nai in my bathroom?" "Yes." Ananya went to her bathroom and then came out again. "Mamma you are not angry with papa na because he did not come home to take care of you." "No I am not angry with your papa." "Mamma you are not jealous no?" "Jealous? Why should be jealous?" "Wo kya hai na papa loves me more than he loves you." Anandi laughed at Ananya's cuteness. She pulled her cheeks and kissed her on the reddened cheeks.

Anandi was thinking about the things that had happened. The way she saw Shiv react to rain and now Ananya told her that he did not have a shower in his washroom. It all made her wonder. She had to clear her doubts and get rid of them or she had to make sure of them being correct and try to help Shiv. In the evening Anandi, Shiv and Ananya were in the garden. "Papa." Ananya called Shiv who was working on his lap top. He put it aside and went to her. He was smiling at his daughter. "Yes princess." Ananya had a small watering can in her hands. "Papa I want to give water to plants. Help me na. How much water should I give to the plant?" Shiv's smile had faded on seeing the watering can. "Ananya not now papa is busy he has work to do." Ananya did not like it as for the first time Shiv had refused her something she wanted. "Papa I am katti with you." Ananya made a cute miffed face at Shiv and walked away from him. Shiv was saddened that Ananya was miffed with him but he was helpless. Anandi was sitting at the steps and she heard and saw everything. Ananya was going inside the house when Anandi caught her. "Kya hua why is my baby sho gussha?" Ananya sat on her lap and looked away from Shiv. Anandi saw it. "Papa se gussa hai Ananya?" She asked in a shocked voice. "Yes. You know mamma what papa did?" "What did he do?" "He told Ananya no when Ananya asked papa to help her water the plants. I am katti with papa. You too become katti with papa." Anandi smiled at Ananya.

"Why should I become katti with papa? Papa has not made me miffy. You know what even Ananya should not be miffy with papa. Pata hai kyun?" "Kyun?" "Because beta papa did not want to say no to you he had to." "Why?" "Beta you know na that it rained so much today." "Hmm." "Toh the plants got water from rain. Even mali kaka did not give the plants water today. Plants need water but if you give them more than they need they become ill. And beta one more thing see it is evening. I hope that there comes a day when you will share your past with me just like you asked me to share mine with you.'

Days passed neither Anandi nor Shiv opened up to the other about their respective past. It was Sunday. Anandi and Shiv were supposed t go out for movie and dinner. Irawati and Ananya had gone to her friends place so that Anandi and Shiv would be alone at home before their date. The driver had the Sunday off. Shiv was worried about taking Anandi to the movie hall in his car. Anandi realized it. He was in the hall. "Ready?" He asked with hesitation. "Umm nahi I will take time. You can go ahead. Waise bhi I will take time to get ready and in that mean time you can have the car serviced or anything that needs to be done. I will meet you at the cinema hall." Shiv's face lit up. "Sure?" Anandi smiled. "Yes." Shiv left from the house and Anandi got ready. She hailed an auto and reached the cinema hall. She did not know that Shiv had parked the car behind their house. He had been following her in his car to make sure that she was fine and safe. Anandi reached the cinema hall and Shiv went to park the car in the parking lot. When he came back he saw that some hooligans were eyeing Anandi. She was ignoring them.

Anandi looked at him approach her. She became nervous not knowing how he would react. Shiv came to her and possessively put his arm around her waist. She looked at him with shock. "Sorry wife for being late. Traffic jam." He even held his ears. He looked at the hooligans. "I am sure your brothers must have taken care of you. What say saalon did you take good care of your sister? If not then I your jeejusa will be very angry with you." The hooligans ran away from there. Anandi was looking at Shiv like she would look at Salman Khan. He looked at her and saw that she was fangirling over him. He raised his eyebrows. "Kya! Are you mad? Why did you not react to them? Ye heels sirf height badhane ke liye you wear? You should have removed them and used them on those hooligans." She was still looking at him. She had tears in her eyes. She hugged him. "Arre pagal ho kya? I was not scolding you baba. Why are you crying? Stop crying people will think that I am forcing you to come with me on the date." She was still sobbing and speaking between sobs. "I thought ki you would scold me because those hooligans were teasing me." Shiv wiped her tears. "Why would I scold you for them teasing you? You did not ask to be teased na. Which crack head would blame and scold a girl for being teased..." He cupped her face and looked straight into her eyes. "Anandi I am not your past nor am I a shadow of it. I am your present and future." They smiled at each other.

Are you sure you will be fine?" Anandi smiled at him and loved the caring side he showed her when she was in her senses. "Yes I will be fine. Waise bhi after the talk you gave to my brothers I don't think they will be coming back." Shiv went to move his car. He came back in 4 minutes. Anandi liked it that he did not keep her waiting and alone. All the patrons were moving towards the cinema hall. "Anandi let's go inside." "Umm wo..." "Wo kya?" "I gave the tickets to a couple." Anandi smiled at him. Shiv looked at her. "What are you smiling for? You gave our tickets to the love birds now what will we do for 3 hours? After movie we have to go for dinner. If we will reach home my ma and our dadi ma will grill us." Anandi had no idea what to do. "I don't know what to do. What will do now?" Shiv looked at her. "This you should have thought before giving our tickets away." "Chalen?" "Where?" "I am ready to go wherever you take me." Shiv was touched by her words but her actions told her something else. "I will go get the car." Shiv went to get the car only to return after 10 minutes. "Wo..." "The car is giving trouble and we can't go by the car." "How did you know?" She just looked at him. He was taking time to search for her so that she would have more fun. He also checked the drawers and under the rug. He heard Ananya's giggle. She was hiding under the pillows on his bed. Shiv went and put his hands under the pillows and lifted her out from under. "Gotcha. Now papa will hide."

Ananya was counting and Shiv hid under his bed. Ananya counted till 20 and began searching for her father. She was searching for him in her room. Irawati came there. "Ananya chalo you have not had your breakfast." "Dadi mamma and papa also did not have breakfast." "Mamma is having her bath uske baad mamma papa will have breakfast. We wanted them to have fun outside but they did not na. Toh dadi has made a plan they will have breakfast alone in their room." "Wow." Ananya forgot about the hide and seek game she was playing with Shiv and went to have her breakfast. Shiv was hiding under the bed waiting for Ananya to come and seek him out. He removed his cell phone and began checking his e mails. He heard the chum chum of Anandi's anklets. He looked away from his cell phone. His eyes popped. "What the hell is she doing? Why can I see her legs? What is she wearing?" Shiv covered his eyes. He opened one eye to see if she was gone so that he can come out. He was not expecting to see what he saw. She dropped her bath robe. He had to get out at any cost. "Ouch!" "Who is it?" "Who else will be in our room? It's me." "Where are you?" "Under the bed." "Chee! What are you doing under the bed? I did not know you had such fetishes. Chee!"

Shiv came out from under the bed. He had banged his head on the frame of the bed. He was rubbing his head. He looked at Anandi. She was giving his dirty looks. "What did you say? Give me the curtain I will hold it around you and you can wear the robe. Promise I will not look." Anandi did as Shiv told her to. They both were looking away from each other. "Ye koi time hai to have a bath? Even if it is then why did you not get ready in Annaya's room?" "I forgot my clothes here." Shiv looked at the clothes and was going out of the room. "Ek minute. Don't go out." "Why not?" "If you go out Ananya will seek you and then again it will be your den." "Toh kya karoon? You want me to be in the room when you change? Nahi na." "Open the door and yell time please. Then you can go out but she can't seek you out." "Smart." "Ab kya karion aisi hi hoon main." Anandi and Shiv smiled.

"Papa what are you doing here?" "I want to have my breakfast. Papa s stomach is growling like a lion." "Papa dadi is sending your and mamma's breakfast in the room." "Why?" "Wo kya hai na you two did not enjoy last night toh today alone mein have breakfast." Shiv closed his eyes. Being alone in a closed room was the last thing the two of them needed. Anandi and Shiv had their breakfast in the room. They had a pleasant time. The whole day enjoyed as a family unaware that the night would bring the worst nightmare Shiv would ever have. Anandi, Shiv and Ananya were in Anandi and Shiv's room. They were playing snakes and ladder. Anandi was winning and Shiv was losing. He saw that at times she was deliberately trying to lose the game. "Anandi don't move." Anandi looked up and saw a racket in Shiv's hand. She began trembling on seeing the racket. "Ananya go from here." She got off the bed and put Ananya down. Shiv too got off the bed with the racket in his hand. Shiv did not understand Anandi's behavior. She was constantly trying to send Ananya away. She was trembling and tears were flowing down her cheeks. Shiv lifted the racket and Anandi began to plead with him. "Not in front of Ananya. Pease let her go. Don't let her see this. Please send her away then you can do whatever you want." Shiv could not believe what she was saying to him and also that she misunderstood him. the racket dropped from his hand.

He stood there in shock with tears running down his cheeks. Shiv was still in shock of the horror that had taken place in his and Anandi's bedroom. A harmless move from Shiv had Anandi to react in the way he would have never expected her to. She continued to plead with him and he did not know how to react. She was perspiring and finally collapsed. Even in her semi conscious state she continued to plead with Shiv. Ananya had witnessed it all but could not understand any of it. She was crying too. "Papa what happened to mamma? Why was she screaming and crying like that?" Shiv felt a tug on his kurta. He came out of the shock. Ananya was asking him again with tears in her eyes. "What happened to mamma?"

Shiv did not have an answer. He did not know. Anandi lay there semi conscious on the floor and her pleading continued. Shiv wanted to shut out the pleadings he was hearing. The pain in her voice was ripping his heart. He hugged Ananya and must have almost squeezed the little child. He calmed himself and wiped her tears. "Ananya nothing has happened to mamma. She just saw a bad dream. Ananya you are mamma papa's good baby na toh listen to papa. Ananya beta go to dadi's room and aaj ki night you do soi soi in her room. Mamma is scared from bad dream na papa has to take care of her. Please baccha." Ananya looked at Shiv. "Papa, why can't I stay here and help you in taking care of mamma? Baby bear and papa bear both take care of mamma bear. Papa Ananya is a big girl." Shiv smiled at her. "I know my baby is the bravest of all. Mamma and papa need to do this beta. You want mamma to forget all her bad dreams and never have them again na?" Ananya nodded her head.

"Then Anaya papa and mamma need to be alone. Mamma and papa both don't want you to hear about the bad dreams. Please baccha." Shiv kissed her on the forehead and sent her to Irawati's room. Ananya stood outside their room and saw Shiv lift an unconscious Anandi from the floor and put her on his bed. He sat next to her and caressed her head. He covered her with the duvet. Shiv came to the door to lock it. He put up a brave face for Ananya and wished her good night. "Good night baby sweet dreams. Mamma and papa both love you very much." "Good night papa. I love you and mamma very much. Mamma ka take care karna ok?" "OK. Ananya..." "Hmm..." "Papa promises that he will take care of mamma. She will never have those nightmares ever again. Tomorrow morning when you will wakey wakey you will find you mamma smiley smiley." "Promise?" "Promise and you know na..." "Papa never breaks a promise." "I will call dadi and tell her to tell you the story of a princess." Shiv called Irawati on the intercom. He asked her to take care of Ananya for the night. She looked at him and got up with a jerk. She had an apologetic scared look on her face. "I am sorry. You send her away. Now you can do whatever you want to." She closed her eyes. Shiv cupped her face. "Anandi open your eyes. Anandi I need you to look at me. Anandi I am Shiv Anandi open your eyes and look at me please." She heard a pain in his voice. She opened her eyes and saw tears flowing down his cheeks. "Anandi I told you that I am not your past or a shadow of it. I am you present and future. I would never hurt you. Not even in my worst nightmare. Anandi this racket..." Anandi looked at it and she was scared to death on seeing it. Shiv put it away. "Nahi Anandi nahi kuch nahi. Anandi there was a mosquito near your head I was just trying to zap it. Kuch nahi Anandi I would never hurt you." She began crying and hugged Shiv. "Anandi I will never let anyone touch you ever again. I will not let those nightmares scare you ever again. Anandi but uske liye you need to tell me all that troubles you. You will tell me na? I have promised Ananya that I will take away all your nightmares and she will see her mamma smiling in the morning. Will you help me keep the promise?" Anandi nodded her head.
