Aahil walks back into their room to find Sanam packing. She frowns and refuses to look at him.
Sanam? You're leaving? Wh-?
She glares at him and makes her way out of the room. He pulls her back, and grabs the bag away.
There's no need for you to leave! Look, please just listen to me...
She interrupts and he doesn't want to listen to it. He brushes her words aside, saying he never meant anything he said outside, "I won't do it anymore..."
"Aahil, just listen to me.."
"No, you listen to me! How can you take such a big step like this, just because of something I said?"
"These are for the orphanage. I'm not going anywhere..."
Aahil is silenced. He takes her hand in both of his and takes a deep breath in relief and remorse. He swallows and says "I'm sorry...what I did outside just now... was completely wrong... I shouldn't have done that... I'm really sorry.."
Poor fellow really got scared that she would leave him. Aahil, Sanam doesn't scare easily, she's Asad Ahmed Khan's daughter. She'll make you face your biggest fears, she won't run away.
"Please forgive me? "
"No, I can't forgive you..." She drops his hand and looks away from him. He looks crestfallen, "I'm genuinely sorry Sanam..."
"I have a condition..."
He is asked to meet her in the garden that evening. He appears, unsure of what to expect. He finds her waiting for him, Why am I here?
"Do you want to know my condition to forgiving you?"
He nods his head, clearly her forgiveness means a lot to him. She asks for his hand, he gives it meekly and follow her.
He is thoroughly puzzled as to what this is about. She leads him to a bunch of white balloons tied up. I'm straight away taken back to a daydream Aahil had with Sanam, when he dreams of a life where Sanam is his family, with love and laughter.
Do you know what your biggest mistake was? That you thought I didn't understand you... I understand you very well. I understand your childhood wasn't beautiful. But being so sorry about it, you are ruining your present and your future.
But the balloons have a different connotation today. She wants him to symbolically let go of his greatest fears by letting go the balloons one by one. She writes his fear on one balloon and asks him to free it.
He scoffs at the whole idea. Don't be silly Sanam! How will this do anything? If letting your problems go on a balloon will help, then the sky would be filled with balloons...! He turns to leave, and she grabs his hand. He looks rattled. He takes her and wants to take her away from doing this.
"Come back Aahil... Come back here..."
"For me..."
Aahil stops. I can see it his face. I'd do anything for her.
Anything. Even this.
"Until now, you have suffered and been buried under the weight of your past, you need to let it go. When you let it go, you'll find a new meaning to your life. Even if it feels silly, just think of it as a game, but trust in me and do it.But do try, if you try hard enough, those nightmares will disappear and never come back..."
He holds the balloon, immediately he's consumed by thoughts of his father beating him, punishing him, and his Ammi chastening him for murdering his father. He struggles to let go of the string, starts to reign it back, but Sanam takes his hand and opens his grasp, releasing the balloon. He watches the balloon go with the wind, up into the sky far away from him.
She gives him another. One by one he releases them all. She helps him release them all. By the end he looks at the faraway balloons, silent tears stream down his face.
Sanam feels his pain as though it were her own. She holds him tight, and they cry in each others arms. She holds him tight, and he accepts her solace. She wipes away his tears as he stands there, raw and exposed to her.
To her only...
<I started off very cynical about this balloon therapy. But by the end, I was crying along with them...>
That was beautiful... All symbolic, but so meaningful and intense. This was their confession of love to me. No words are needed. This was far more beautiful that the words "I love you" could ever be...
