Chapter 13
What the hell!' The similar thought hit both of them as they heard the word boyfriend' from his mouth. We're just friends!' They admitted after a short spell of silence, an awkward one.
Haan Haan, just friends!' A wicked lop sided grin found its way towards Nilay's lips. Of course, their silent exchanges of glances and unspoken words had an interesting story to tell, especially to him. He hadn't, by any chance, failed to notice the special' twinkle in her eyes whenever her eyes fell on her supposed friend'.
'Obvio. I know Jodha.. you wouldn't choose a guy for you without consulting your Jiju, right?' Ending his words with his 'signature wink', his eyes lingered on this special 'friend' of her saali saahiba. Alarmed, Jalal's body tensed up- he wasn't used to this whole head to toe check up, that too from a supposed stranger!
'Uff!' She swore to herself, not too pleased by this awkward scenario- Her Jiju mistaking her friend to be her boyfriend, their blunt denial of the same. And, to add to it- her Jiju doing what would perfectly fit in the category 'checking out' Jalal! Even calling this situation awkward' would be undermining all those tensed feelings that were born in her. She was, obviously not a fan of the circumstances that she was in. Au contraire, she was hating it. This sudden burst of nervousness in her body was driving her crazy. Simply put, she was simultaneously cursing and asking for help from her beloved Kanha.
After bearing up with this sudden check out for a long while, Jalal decided to say a good-bye' to her friend and her not so friendly Jiju. 'Jodha, I guess I should leave now..' Giving a quick glance to find Romi's name flashing on the screen of his I Phone, he added after a brief pause, 'It's the tenth time Romi's calling me.' A sly frown gracing his brows, he continued, 'I'm up for a big lecture. Haven't even messaged him.'
Suppressing a low chuckle that had suddenly emerged seeing his cute expressions, she nodded, an extra wide smile adorning her lips- the aftermath of suppressing a chuckle. Well, the twinkle in her eyes was long gone, ever since she'd heard that he's going to leave. 'Bye yaar, take care!' He concluded, throwing a sweet smile to her.
Waving to him in response, she returned his smile with an extra cute one. He turned, before something important hit him. 'Jodha, you're coming to college tomorrow, right?'
What! A part of her shouted instinctively. Ignoring it, she replied, 'Haan, why you asked?' A confused frown on her brows. 'Nahi, just asking. You never know!' Supporting his words with a naughty wink and mischievous smirk, he finally decided to head to his Honda Civic.
'Oh Shit!' Nilay thought, before running to Jalal. 'Jalal, it's already around 9 pm.. How about having dinner at our place?'
Her eyes widened in shock, it didn't took this wise girl to figure out what her not so innocent Jiju was planning. 'NO!' Jodha shouted, grabbing their attention. Shocked at her own weird behavior, she added, albeit on a more composed note, 'I mean, its getting late naa Jiju. Jalal has to get to his home. Romi bhi toh hai!' Putting up her best please, stop it expressions, she decided to take the matter in her own hands, knowing that Jalal will be too polite to refuse and her Jiju, god! What to expect from him?
'Yea, I agree with her. I guess I should leave now. And, Romi bhi wait kar raha hoga.'
'Arre kya agree?' He blurted before he could mince his words. 'Matlab, have dinner and then go naa, come.' Before both could protest any further, they were being dragged by Nilay.
~~~
Dining room, Singh Apartment
God, what a situation it was! With Jodha and Jalal being the 'nervous' element in the unexpected gathering and Nilay the clown, things definitely couldn't get more awkward than this, could they? Sukanya was way more than simply 'irked' with this unusual or rather funny behavior of her husband. Yet, she couldn't suppress that one chuckle that would escape her throat at every hilarious one liner of him- her love was a true gem!
Jodha and Jalal, they couldn't laugh at any of his jibes, how could they? When this sudden dinner was planned out without their consent? When both of them knew what was going on in Nilay's mind, or rather, devil mind? Yet, they would force a chuckle to come out, precisely for the sake of not appearing 'different' or 'disturbed'.
'Arz kiya hai..' Nilay said, making everyone look at him. 'Chand pe kali ghata chati to hogi, Sitaron ko hansi aati to hogi, Tum lakh chupao duniya se,
Magar akele mein tumhe apni shakal pe hansi aati toh hogi!' Everyone erupted into giggles hearing him.
After a not so short round of giggles and giggles, Bharmal decided to steer the topic diligently, 'Waise Jalal, what course are you doing? I mean, your subject?'
Surprised by the unexpected query, Jalal coughed, before returning to his question. 'Uncle, currently I am doing BBA.'
'BBA, great! And your future plans?'
'My first priority is, umm wait.' Pausing his words, Jalal slipped his left hand into his jeans pocket and unrevealed his sleek I Phone. After a short spell of momentary silence with Jalal browsing something on his Phone, he passed his phone to him so that he could see it for himself. 'Here..' He added, on a calmer note. 'Uncle, I'm planning to work with Samsung, for it is, at present the most commercially successful company in the electronic field. Also, Samsung has its distinct image in the electronic market and the first preference for many people, especially the youth when it comes to mobile phones or laptops. So, I believe that this decision of mine is going to be a beneficial one.' Ending his words with an oh so professional smirk, he looked at Bharmal attentively, expecting a simple reply to his concise explanation.
'Wow! That's impressive! That, and the fact that our Jodha too wants to work with Samsung, keeping in mind her love for Samsung products.' Signaling to the Samsung Galaxy S3 resting peacefully alongside her plate, he returned his phone.
What! Surprised at the sudden turn in their talks, from Jalal's future plans to her Samsung Galaxy S3, the agitated lady glared at her father. Well, she was definitely not having a good time now. Truth be told, she was excited, and surprised at the same time that Jalal too wants to work with Samsung. Their plans were amazingly similar. Not to forget, the brief yet effective explanation that he gave was actually very impressive and that, had made her see Jalal in a whole new light. So maybe, this dinner plan wasn't that bad? If this wouldn't have happened, maybe she couldn't get a chance to see this professional Jalal. Passing an innocent look which read I am impressed to him who was seated comfortably beside her, she went on to help herself with some more curd.
'Well Jalal, I must say, you're a very practical person, aren't you?'
'Umm.. Not exactly uncle. But yes, I am serious regarding my future... But before he could continue, the sudden interruption of Jodha in their talks surprised him. 'Arre Papa. He is serious regarding his future only... Baaki toh you don't know, in college he is such a...' Biting her lip in embarrassment as she was about to spill the beans about their second meet in the gym, she thanked god for stopping herself at the exact right moment. Well, not exactly the RIGHT moment.
Suspicions have been aroused, glaring session had begun, Jalal had been startled to such an extent that he had nearly coughed his food down by the time she stopped her chatterbox mouth. Taking in the sudden change in the demeanor of the gathering, she gulped in nervousness. 'I.. I meant to say... He's.. He's a pran..Prankster...'
'Oh!' Everyone erupted into hearty giggles before they could stop themselves. Well, the answer Jodha gave was too funny itself. And to add it, her hell nervous expressions. God! They all couldn't have enough of her, could they? Jalal, on the other hand, was relieved with this answer of hers. Okay, he was not so welcoming with her statement that he is a prankster, which is an absolute lie. But, that definitely saved them both from a lot of trouble!
Swiftly glancing at her, he reverted his attention back to his nearly empty plate. He had to finish the remaining bit soon, for he was feeling too 'different' here. No doubt that Jodha's family, especially Nilay and Mr.Bharmal were very humbling, yet the way it all began, with the misconception of 'boyfriend girlfriend', he didn't know where it all will lead to!
His thoughts were disturbed by Mainawati's question that jumped out of nowhere. 'Beta, Jodha and you, are very good friends?' The uneasiness in her voice was evident. At that point of time, Jodha and Jalal casted each other a quick glance before he replied, 'Aunty, we all- Romi, Sunny, Kajal, Moti and Jodha. We all are very good friends, a big group!' Passing a genuine smile to the tensed lady in a bid to calm her teeny weeny bit, his eyes did a quick review of all the people sitting at the table.
~~~
'Jalal.' Calling out to him who was walking way too fast for this exhausted lady to catch up, she finally decided to ask him to slow down. 'Haan?' Turning back as if taken by surprise, he erupted into an I-knew-It smirk. 'Too fast? No probs. I'll slow down!'
Whatever! She dismissed his various attempts in one go. So what if she DID like that smirk of his? So what if she DID like the mischief in his eyes? His antics were too much for her to take! She had, by now begun to regret the moment when she volunteered to show Jalal the complex in which they resided. As they say, 'One should take a walk after having dinner. It's good for health!'
Walk? She let out a sarcastic chuckle. Yea Yea! But this walk' is more of a marathon for me. Throwing an angry look to the more-than-just-happy guy beside her, she continued her quipping in her thoughts. Uff oh Jalal! Tum bhi nah...too much ho!
'Jodha..' he initiated the conversation, knowing that she was happily murdering him in her thoughts.
'Ha..Haan' Startled out of her thoughts, she turned to him.
'Umm... you too want to work with Samsung?'
NOT AGAIN! Immediately craning her neck to talk to her kahna, she added- Why Kanha? Why? Papa bhi, What was the need of sharing all this with HIM?
'Haan toh. Any problem?'
'Nahi yaar, just asking'
There! He was back to his old Jalal style- walking in front of her and that too so fast that at one point she thought she would collapse then and there.
'Accha sun!' Not waiting for his response, she continued, 'Nilay jiju ki taraf se sorry haan. Wo unhe misunderstanding ho gayi hain.. No worries, I'll sort it today!' Giving her 100 watt smile to him, she awaited his response.
'Boyfriend' He giggled. Okay, this might not have been funny at that time, but for them, it was definitely no less than hilarious now!
'Hawww! You're laughing... Waha god knows Jiju kya soch rahe hain!' Hitting him playfully on his chest, she put up her angry young woman look. Laughing at her strange acts, he glanced at his watch. It was almost 10 pm. Time went by and they didn't eve realize!
'Oh shit! Jodha it's almost 10. I better get going yaar. Main shaheed nahi hona chahta!' Winking at her mischievously, he waved to her and finally bid adieu to this interesting evening.
'Hmm.. so I guess this is the end..' Sighing as if in great distress, the slightly depressed lady retraced her steps towards her apartment. If only, she could understand the play of fate!
~~~
The next day at Amity University
'Woah! The traffic at the main road was just...' Cursing herself and the traffic that they met with, the anxious lady hurriedly climbed the stairs, with her bestie Moti trailing behind her.
'Just sickening!' Moti completed her words, knowing what would be going on in her already worried mind.
'I agree!' Jumping through two stairs in hurry, she managed to wink at her, before quickly regressing her attention to the stairs.
'Why can't they just install a lift Moti? This damn stair climbing takes WHOLE 10 minutes!' Emphasizing on 'whole', she glared at Moti who was busy in drinking in her sulky' expressions. 'Ab kya karein, they don't know naa that Maharani Jodha studies in Amity University!' Making no attempt in masking the over dramatic accent in her voice, she chirped happily, knowing just what to expect from this moody lady.
'Maharani?' She sneered- by now, if she had learnt anything in this university, then it was not to take things seriously. 'Yup. I am a queen!'
'That you are, no doubt!'
After rounds of running and chatting, they finally made it to the class as a slow Yay escaped their throats. After all, making it to the class on time with loads and loads of students swarming in the corridors, making merry while leaning against the posh wall was no less than a feat in itself, isn't it?
~~~
Canteen area, Lunch Time
'Finally!' Jodha exclaimed in joy as they had finally spotted a suitable table for the trio, keeping in mind the students who were flooding in. Throwing their hand bags on the table, they sighed- before erupting into giggles. When three girls, oops! College girls are together, then is there, any need for a joke to come up to make them laugh? Nah. All they need is company! ;)
'Hey!' A familiar voice resonated from behind, compelling the trio to look at the sudden intruder. Jalal, She thought, as the events from the previous night dinner replayed in her mind. God! That was nothing short of hilarious yet unnerving!
Clad in his ever green white T Shirt and black denim jacket, paired up perfectly with his black jeans, she couldn't help but compliment HIM, albeit decently. 'Hi Jalal! You're looking cool, I mean. Black suits you.'
'Thanks,' giving his very own naughty wink, he couldn't help but adore her dressing sense. She would always make it a point to look drop dead gorgeous, though she barely made ANY effort to do so. Her white figure hugging kurti with her green churidar, she completed her look with her green hoop earrings, he couldn't help but compliment HER, albeit decently. 'You're looking nice too. Green looks really good on you!'
At THAT compliment, she HAD to lift her eyes to meet his, unbroken and undisturbed stares. Was he, like gawking her? It HAD to be something else. Shrugging those weird thoughts off her mind, she nodded in response.
Mini skirts, salwar, anarkali and now this beautiful kurti. Am waiting to see more of it, my dear lady... somehow, he managed to say all this, yet didn't utter a word.
You will, very soon! And, you're looking no less than a Greek God in this attire, you know that? There seemed to be some sort of connection between them, they could well understand each other's unspoken words, intent glances.
Of course I know that! Giggling a little at his own reply, he looked at her, pure serenity masking his face.
Good for you!
Umm, mind if I join you at the table? Raising his eyebrows along with his question, he signaled at the table.
Here? Ya Sure! She passed an extra sweet sugary smile to him while waiting for him to sit.
But it wouldn't look awkward, right?
'Uff Oh!' Slapping her forehead in mild annoyance, Moti glared at the duo, making it evident that their eye talks session had gone on for maybe, too long? At first, Jodha was shocked- Uff Oh was exactly the reply she wanted to give Jalal!
'There are some other LIVING human beings too here, along with Jalal, of course!' Reprimanding Jodha with not a hint of softness in her voice, she turned to Jalal. 'And same goes for you, Mr. Mohammed!'
Jodha couldn't control that one giggle that suddenly crept up with Moti emphasizing on LIVING'. Sometimes, friends are unbelievable, aren't they?
'Okay fine!' Raising her hands as if surrendering, Moti finally declared, 'Jalal, how about sitting together for some snacks?'
Nodding, Jalal took his place- with Jodha in front of him.
'Oh shit!'
'What happened Jalal?'
'Kya hua?'
'Is everything okay?' Kajal, who had just barged in the canteen, butted in- taking in everyone's uncomfortable expressions.
'Jodha, am angry with you!'
What!' What? Maine kya kiya?' Shocked, she threw pensive glances at everyone, only to find the girls looking at her with utter confusion. Raising an eyebrow which signaled don't you remember, he went on to reveal the reason Remember what you said about me yesterday?'
'Now what did I say?' Sporting her best I AM Innocent look, she pouted cutely.
'Accha? So you forgot about it?'
Oh! PRANKSTER! 'God!' She swore out aloud, oblivious to the surroundings. 'Jalal, you're such a'
'Am such a?'
'Prankster!' Holding her stomach which had now began to hurt, all thanks to this unlimited stock of laughing, she retorted back.
'Yea right. Now you'll see what a prankster does!' Almost struggling to wipe that mischievous smirk off his face, he replied- knowing what effect this will have on her.
Her face became serious in a jiffy. Humor forgotten. Now, what did THAT mean? Is he going to play a prank or what? Her inner self started warning her.
'I am going to my classes. It's almost time.' Picking up her handbag, she quickly waved to everyone- everyone except him and started walking towards her classes.
Moti tried interrupting her, reminding her that there were actually NO more classes scheduled for that day, but alas! If only she was listening.
'Abhi kahan!' Grabbing her wrist, he pulled her to him.
SPLASH!
'Haaw!' Jodha sulked. THIS was what she had never expected-that too from HIM. Patting her wet face with her hanky, she decided to return his favor, with interest, of course! Grabbing that damn water bottle from his hands, she allowed that evil smirk to lurk on her face.
SPLASH!!
'What the hell!' Glancing at his wet T Shirt and Jacket, Jalal again glanced at her, water droplets trickling down his jaw. 'You're so gone Jodha!' He remarked, before seizing back the bottle.
'NO!!' Jodha screamed, before running here and there, pulling out chairs in an attempt of self defense. 'Moti, Kajal! Help karo!'
At this, Moti and Kajal peeked at each other, as if knowing that they shared common thoughts. 'Nah! We don't want to get involved!' They chorused, winking at her as Jodha looked at them with her mouth in a perfect O' shape.
'Dhokebaazon!' Jodha shouted, before aiming her handbag at them. They so deserved this! If only, it could have hit them, but her not so good aim and their skill- they ducked at the exact moment!
'Okay, now STOP!' she said, panting. She wasn't that athletic to hop around the canteen, not to mention the embarrassment she was facing! Not lifting her eyes to meet with those Are you mad or what looks that she so hated, she glared at Jalal from the corner of her eyes.
'Am going!' She asserted, before picking up her handbag that had been lying on the canteen floor for quite some time. 'Haan. Me too!' Moti said, the sudden friend' in her making its appearance. 'Me too!' Kajal joined in, and the trio waved to Jalal. They walked up to the pay counter to pay for the snacks that were ordered by them but never got a chance to relish, all thanks to the sudden Water Fight that ensued between their heros!
'Me too!' His response echoed from the behind, making the girls giggle. 'Hey stop!' He stopped them from paying the money, which came as a surprise to them.
'Kya hua?' She asked, a confused frown gracing her brows.
'Arre... This one's on me!' He said, fishing out his wallet- only for it to get snatched by HER.
'In your dreams!' She said and hastily paid the amount, before turning to Jalal with an I won, again smirk.
'Jodha, you're just!'
'Unbelievable!' Moti and Kajal said together, and they all hi-fived before parting ways.
'Bye,' she whispered.
'Bye'

Part 14
'Yaar, actually.. I.. Matlab hum, we all are busy.. can't come for movie..'
'Kya!' The young man showed no signs of masking the raw surprise that filled his voice. He was surprised. He was disappointed. He was frustrated. They all had planned a movie together, before their exams- keeping in mind EVERYONE. And now, a day before the show, in a candid chat on phone his bestie says on the behalf of the whole group that the plan's cancelled! Wow.
'Aisa kya ho gaya? You ALL are busy?' He asked, suspicion now clouding his senses- he could foresee a prank, one of those many that they had played on him. He had guessed that it was all a joke, and by the end of the call they'll laugh it out. But it seemed the other way round.
'Haan... Romi has fractured his hand, as you know. Humein toh laga tha that he can come but aunty refused. You know naa how protective she is of Romi. Sunny had to go for some family function. Aur main, Papa had grounded me.' A momentarily gloom could be seen in his voice as he concluded his words, but Abdul quickly snapped out of it.
Abdul- He is Jalal best-est buddy. Thanks to an important family occasion, he had to go to US for a month- just when it all transpired between Jodha and Jalal. He arrived in India a day before, and no way was his dad going to allow him to hang out' with his friends after a big fight that had ensued between the father son duo!
Sigh. He was right too. Jalal could do with not going for a movie with his friends, but seeing Abdul low was something he couldn't deal with. 'Koi nahi yaar.. we'll go some other time.'
'Promise. We'll make it up to you, big time!' Abdul quipped, enthusiasm filling his voice.
'I'll make sure to get you all at my feet. Paisa wasool..' He replied, winking naughtily.
'Wish I could see that wink of yours...'
'Hard luck, buddy!' He giggled, making his bestie burst into laughter too.

Jodha's Apartment
'Mumma, can I go for a movie?' Jodha pleaded to her lovely mother hoping that she would give her consent. Buttering, check. Extra Sweet voice, check. Big, puppy eyes, check. Getting her mom a bouquet of roses, check. Chocolates, check! Everything that was required to make her mom agree was there with her, yet- no luck.
There she was, standing with a pack of chocs in her one hand and the bouquet in the other hand- her puppy expressions at their best to make her agree.
'Nahi beta. Your exams are going to start soon. I am not allowing you to make merry when you have exams on your head!'
'Mumma!' She counter-attacked, surprise evident. 'Merry making? Seriously? We are just planning to chill out.'
'WE? Who else comes in that we' Jodha?' Annoyed by her constant rants and surprised by her words, she said.
'Uff!' She swore to herself, unable to bear her mom's antics anymore.' Mumma its me, Kajal, Moti, Jalal- the guy who came a few days before naa. And- Rohan, Sunny, Romi aur haan, Jalal ka ek friend bhi tha..' Leaving her words hanging to recall the name of his friend', she continued when she had been successful in doing so. Haan, Abdul. Matlab in total hum 8 friends are there!' She beamed excitingly, her eyes twinkling recalling how enthusiastically the group had planned about the rendezvous.
'What!' The tensed mother covered her mouth in disappointing shock, again! 'You're going with guys! Jodha, are you joking? The show will end around 8:00 pm in the night. You want to come back all alone in this pitch dark time, are you serious?'
'Mumma.. aisa nahi hain.. Kajal and Moti would be there too! Plus Jalal said ki himself will drop me back. Aap chinta mat karo..' Patting her shoulder reassuringly, she continued- 'Mumma, you know naa how much I love going out.. aur woh bhi with friends. Please Mumma.. please.. please.. please.. please..'
'Jodha.' She reprimanded her with a stern glare, before continuing- 'You are not understanding it beta. It's coming winter nowadays. Upar se you know naa around 6 it gets all dark outside. And here you want to stay outside with a bunch of guys! How am I to allow you that?'
Taking hold of the nearby chair to avoid slipping, she went on to coax her mother, knowing that till now, none of her antics had worked. 'Aap.. Aapko bhi mujhpe trust nahi hai?' Tears trickled down her cheeks as she said those words.
'Jodha.' Mother said, immense love clearly mirroring in her voice. Cupping her daughter's face in her hands thereon, she continued.' Beta, you know its not like that.. I do trust you. I trust you more than myself.. Beta but..'
'What but?!'
'Jodha, It's not safe for women to hang out at late hours. You very well know that.'
'But mumma if you trust your daughter, then why you can't leave all your worries behind and allow me to enjoy my college days! Why?'
At this, her mom had to look in her eyes, and melt at her daughter's words. They were true, weren't they? Her trust on her daughter was unbreakable- and if that is so, then why can't she allow her to flap her wings and have fun with her friends for a last few days. Okay, fine- She WAS going out, that was final.
'Fine.' She sighed. 'You CAN go for the movie, provided, you promise to be home by'
'Pakka I'll be home by 10!' She beamed, excitement evident.
She couldn't help but chuckle at her daughter's expressions. All her antics, her cute expressions only made her more and more adorable! If her daughter could be so cute and delightful, then how could she resist herself from grabbing her in her arms?
'So? I am going.. right?'
'Umm.. Yes!'
She'd nearly jumped as the much awaited approval finally arrived- well, she had been on the mission to coax and cajole her mom ever since the plan was made, and now, finally, it was a YES!
'Mumma!' She screamed, before reaching out to embrace her amused mother in a loving hug.
'I love you too baccha!' She patted her back comfortingly, pouring her love for her daughter in that one hug.

Abdul's Residence
A wicked grin descended on his lips as the impish man hi fived his friends that had, what was definitely not a surprise, had lumped on the couch- thanks to the labor that he'd made them do!
'Mission Successful! Romi, Sunny.. I've convinced Jalal. We all are busy.' He affirmed, before taking his place beside them.
'Finally. All our khoon paseene ki mehnat didn't go in vain!' Exasperated, Romi snapped, massaging his hands.
'For the first time in history, I agree with Romi.' Resonated Sunny's voice. 'Yaar Abdul, we were your friends.'
'And you ACTUALLY made us arrange your bookshelf and tidy your place? I mean, seriously?' having joined the duo in the seek answer' game, Rohan lounged on the couch, resting his head on the headrest.
'Arre.. doston mein bhi you all are doing this formality?' Dismissing their continuous attempts to rile him up, he answered- as calm as ever.
'Kya dosti? You actually blackmailed us to do YOUR work!' Came the trio's quick and curt reply.
Then I too, ACTUALLY' stressing on the word- Actually, he added, lied to my buddy for a girl who I don't even know..' No need to clarify, the unknown' girl was none other than Jodha, the charming lady who had managed to capture the group's attention. No wonder then, that Abdul, a guy who strongly opposed lies, lied to his best friend- precisely, for a girl he never met!
'She's nice yrr.. In fact I think Jalal and she.. you know..' Romi winked at the group, pure mischief brewing in his eyes.
'Accha?' An intrigued Abdul questioned, his eye brows furrowed. Obviously, all the tales that HE had heard from them had left him impressed. Not to mention, their story was quite filmy!
'Haan...you know, they both are such big dramebaaz! Dono takkar ke hain..'
'She has to be. Jalal can't be handled that easily..' Abdul mumbled, a naughty grin adorning his lips. Dropping his voice to a whisper, he said to himself, 'Maybe Jodha is the only girl who could help him get over his past.. Jalal.'
~~~
A Day Later,
Oberoi Mall, Mumbai
'Jalal.. I still think ki humein nahi aana chahiye tha.. without our group.. it seems so boring naa!' A disinterested Jodha uttered. True, she had wanted to come to the movie, but with the entire GROUP. Not just the two of them.
Silently cursing her friends for forcing them to come here, she couldn't help but glance at him. Well, he looked just as bored as she was- what with movie showing no signs of starting anytime soon.
'You mean to say, that my company is boring?' His eyebrows furrowed at her comment, obviously fake. Yeah, he was faking it, and why not? If that meant that the boredom in the air would vanish, then why not?
'No.. I mean yes.. matlab I don't know.. your company is, no doubt interesting.. lekin had our group been with us it would have been more fun naa? Plus I had to face mumma's emotional blackmail too!'
'What?? Emotional blackmail? Why so?' Curious, he put forward his query.
'Haan. She already wasn't too thrilled to let me come with you all.. aur phir with this change of plan, she'd nearly refused, but I managed to convince her..!' Her eyes gleamed as she sang her praises, and he couldn't help but chuckle.
'Drama Queen!' Nicknaming her with reference to her non stop crazy antics, he flashed a It Suits You smirk to her.
'Haaaw!' Surprised, rather shocked at this new name that he'd just given her, she turned to look at him, her eyes fixed on him rather than the screen which was showing the movie.
'Kya haaw?' Something hit his not so innocent mind as he quickly continued his words- 'Haan.. See you proved it! You ARE a drama queen!' Winking at her mischievously, he fixed his keen gaze on the screen.
'Yeah.. Whatever.' Dismissing his attempts, she too stared at the screen, yet her mind didn't seem to pay ANY kind of attention to the movie. How could she? When he was sitting beside her, close to her- his breathing irregular. Yeah, that was all she could notice- for her ego wouldn't allow her to turn to him and ogle' him.
~~~
Half an Hour Later,
'Jalal!' She gasped as her fingers subconsciously reached out to entwine them with his.
'Kyaa.' Surprised at her gesture, he reverted his attention to the young lady seated beside him, although the scene was not what he expected. Her eyes widen in shock, her jaw dropped down, and her grasp around his fingers tight and taut.' Dekho. What are they doing?'She pointed to the screen, and as Jalal turned towards the screen, he couldn't help but bear a What the look on his face. He looked with rapt attention as the leads kissed- but, his attention was not for the movie. No no, it was for her.
'So what?' He asked firmly, his fingers moving in her grip. Alas! She showed no signs of releasing him anytime soon. Arre, they are... You brought me to watch this?'
'Kya yrr Jodha.. You want me to watch an animated movie with you along with popcorn and pepsi?'
'Nahi.. matlab, ye toh. This scene didn't got censored?'
'Jodhaa..' He whispered, his voice low.
She got the message.

Outside the theatre
His traditional smirk adorning his lips, he went on to do what he so loved- gazing at her 'surprised and shock' look. True, he had expected this kind of reaction from her. What with her never being exposed to these things, it looked like she had just gone through a transformation. True, these small things don't really matter, but then these small little things are what that matters, right?
'Hey..' Clicking his fingers in front of her eyes, he made a subtle attempt to bring back the lady from the dream world that she had drifted into.
'Haan..' Having been abruptly pulled out of her stupor, she turned to face him.
'So, did you enjoy the movie?' He asked, correction- he teased. He very well knew that the attention of Ms. Bashful was lost the moment the leads kissed, she seemed to have floated somewhere else.
'Jalal..' She uttered, her tone somewhat serious. 'Do you watch movies like this often?'
He got it. So she was worried about it. And why not? It had been only weeks since they've met, how much could she possibly know him to that extent? Nah, she was right.
Well, that didn't mean that he wasn't affected. He was, but decided that it would be best not to give in to his reactions now. 'Nope yaar. It was Abdul who decided which movie to watch. I just booked the tickets.'
'Oh..' Was all she could say, for her own words seemed to trouble her now. Her own friends were no 'innocent' either, than why was she so bothered about him?
'Jodha.' He said, hoping to steer the conversation to a lighter topic. 'That doesn't answer my question. Did you enjoy the movie?'
'Ohho! Jalal..' she thought to herself, before looking in his eyes. 'Abb..' She scratched her forehead in the search of an apt answer for this tricky question. 'Matlab, it was a good time-pass.. nothing special. Kuch yaad rehne layak nahi.'
'Accha' He furrowed his eyebrows in response to her words. 'But I thought ki it was something jo you'll remember forever!' Completing his devil reply to her words with his ever green naughty wink, he went on to grasp her expressions- something he so loved!

Amity University, the Next Day
'Uff! We are late, again! Moti, you're gonna pay for this..' Reprimanding her friend for delaying them for 20 minutes, she glared at her bestie, continually walking up the fleet of stairs.
'Sorry yaar.. the alarm didn't go off.. Mom Dad are in Kanpur, you know naa. Toh,'
'Toh Madam Moti didn't actually wake up. Yeah Yeah, I know that.'
'Sorry!' She put up her best puppy expressions, only to receive a punch from her in response.
'No more maskha, I am warning you Moti.' Her fiery eyes glowed. 'Accha Accha ok.' The afraid pal quickly gave in to her buddy's request, knowing that it was the only way to calm down this sherni.
'Okay..' As she turned away from her bestie who was a couple of stairs behind her, she unconsciously bumped into someone, only adding fuel to her anger.
'Kon hai, can't you see?!' She surmised angrily, before having to look at her victim.
'What? It was YOU who bumped into me, not me Ms. Whatever!' Darting her a steel glare, the unknown girl went on to pick up her belongings that were now happily resting on the floor, unknown to the storm going on in Jodha's mind.
Rolling her eyes in plain disappointment, her eyes unknowingly landed onto the register that'd fallen, with Priya legibly scribbled on the cover! 'Priya..' A voice went off in her mind. Was she? Was she the one? Ms. Flirt?
Her eyes checked her out- her white mini skirt seeming some extra 'mini' to her, her pink tank top showing off her shoulders. She must be the ONE.' She boiled in anger, as her previous conversation with Jalal about THIS girl flashed through her mind. 'Flirt kahin ki!'
'Tum? Tum Jalal ke peeche kyun padi ho, hun? Why are you after my friend?' Having forgotten that they were running late for the class, she picked up a fight with the not so friendly stranger that she'd just met!
'What! Tumhara dost?' Visibly stunned at her words, the apparent 'stranger' retorted back.
'Haan, mera dost!' She affirmed, before realizing the meaning of her words. 'I...I mean, mera aur Moti ka dost.' Grasping her pal's hand as if restating what she'd already said, he raised Moti's hand.
'Kya?' Moti whispered, before receiving a Shut- Up' glare from her bestie.
'Jalal became friends with a girl, and that too you!' As if 'checking her out', Priya moved her gaze from her head to toe. Granted, the girl who'd just picked fight with her was beautiful. Granted, she had an amazing dress sense- not too boring, not too skimpy. Granted, she looked attractive and innocent. But she was NO match for Priya and Jalal would definitely NOT befriend such a girl!
'Yes. Jalal became friends and that too with ME!' Mimicking her voice, Jodha went on to throw the register, no- PRIYA's register on her face- hard luck, she caught it. 'Listen, I am warning you for the first and last time. Jalal is NOT interested in you, so back off. And, for your kind information.' Her eyes blazed with fury 'He gets irritated and makes weird faces whenever you text him. Your number is also saved in his phone.' She revealed, things now blowing totally out of proportion.'By the name of stalker!'
She stomped her foot in anger. An action so typical of hers. Priya Malhotra- The 'flirty' of the college is also known for another famous trait of hers-anger.'Stalker?And me?Not even in your dreams,silly girl.'' She dashed down the stairs- everyone moving away from her path.
'Silly hogi tu.'Her whisper was heard by Moti.'Chalein?'She asked softly,trying hard not to add fuel in this fire.
'Chal naa..When did I stop you?'
~~~
At the College Ground,
'Hey Jodha!I mean, you didn't come to the canteen today?' Racing up towards the girly trio that continued to talk their way through the grounds, he panted- the distance had been considerable.
'Haan.Toh?'Her reply was curt,sharp and to the point.
'Nahi.matlab.. we were waiting for you.' His stammer was obvious, and expected. It is rare that his friend gets so angry that she transforms from the 'talkative' Jodha to the 'silent' Jodha.
'Accha?'Her eyebrows furred at his reply, surprised-of course.But sarcastically. 'I thought you were waiting for someone else.' Dropping her voice to ensure she isn't heard by anyone 'for that Chudail..'
'Kya?'
'Kuch nahi.'Her tone was firm, in contrast with the chirpy tone she'd always had!
'Arre Jodha.'Too bad, before he could complete his words- she had already stormed away- leaving behind a surprised Jalal and a concerned Moti. She had never seen Jodha act like this, it was.. well, it was shocking- for everyone.
'What happened to her?'One look in his eyes and she could tell that he too was worried about her.
'Wo..'
Update- Part 15
"Urrgh.. I just hate this..!" She cursed, for the nth time in that evening, entirely shaken up by how it all transpired. "I hate you Jalal... You and your girlfriend, go to hell!" "That witch! I'll kill her the next time she comes in front of me!" She barged in her room, her curses resonating within the walls.
"Jealous?" Came her sister's reply, who else? It was Sukanya. Glancing over her shoulder, she reckoned that her sister wouldn't truly leave a single opportunity to have fun on her expense!
"No.." She fumbled, before daring to peer back into her eyes. "Why would I be jealous?"
"Yeah Right.. That's why when Jalal was hurt you were..." Another retort, from another enemy cum sis of hers. "Shivani shut up!" She was truly surprised- that reference had made her think, think of it all..
"When was Jalal hurt?" Quizzed Sukanya. Obviously, this whole fiasco was entertaining for her, but somewhere she felt strange- HER Jodha had never ever been so jealous of a friend's friend. In fact, it is indeed rare for a self assured girl like her to be jealous.
"Arre di you know.." Shivani jumped in, more than ready to clear her elder sister's confusion. "Nothing di..." Jodha blurted. "You go and call Jiju.. He'd called me during my lectures, he wanted to talk to you.. go go."
"But I talked to him already Jodha, just now.."
"Then go naa talk to him again, what's the harm?" She shut her lids tightly, evidently displeased by where it all was leading.
"Jodha?" Spoke Sukanya, her voice soft, gentle,- she was amused by these new traits of impatience' and jealousy' her sister was showing..
At Jalal's Place
My Dear Jalal,
Like bees buzz around the flower,
So does girls around you..
But you know its me,
Who you belong to..
Yours forever,
Priya,
"Yuccks" A voice went off in his head as his eyes fell on the sign. "Forever? I would die in this life only.." He thought, breaking out into a light chuckle. "This girl, she'll die one day running after me.."
Sigh. This one Priya had created havoc in his life- his seemingly mature' friend was jealous of her. She was literally boiling when they last met, refusing to even listen to him once. A mild shiver ran through his spine imagining what his life would be if there are thousands of Priyas to deal with!
"Now I should better call her up.. She's really miffed." His eyes twinkled as he thought up of ways to butter up his friend.
Priya's Home
"God! Why doesn't Jalal listen to me" She pouted, her eyes scrutinizing her reflection in the mirror she stood before, from head to toe. "I am beautiful.." She averred, letting her hands roll gingerly on her cheeks. "And I am perfectly fit!" Her hands slid down to her stomach, gently pulling it for any signs of fat. There was none, not a surprise after all the dieting drama she got crazy about!
"And that girl... Jalal has made her his friend." All signs of peachy blush diminished from her pretty face as she recalled the feisty young girl who'd dared to bump into her.
"What does she have that I lack? Looks? Intelligence? Attitude?" She wondered, "I have everything which she has..."
"I am better than her!"
Jodha's Home
"Moti, come over here.. like right now! And bring Kajal and all too... Yeah.. For a nightover.. Yeah mom said yes.. You come here na, why are you bothered about her permission? Moti...Uhh!" Venting out her frustration with literally everything in the world, she threw her phone as it landed, thank heavens, on the bed.
"I just hate Moti.. She never listens to me.. everytime she just wants to order me, huh!" She cribbed, and walked in her elder sister as she stared at her in surprise.
"What happened, Jodha?" She quizzed, plonking on the bed, right next to her. "You look.. Weird." She let out a slight chuckle.
"What?" Shifting her gaze from the oblivion to her elder sis, she stared at her in disbelief. "Are you calling me weird, by any chance?"
"No.." She immediately backed out. "Not you, actually. But your face.. Its weird.."
"You said I have a weird face???!!" Quickly grabbing a pillow to attack, she aimed it at her sister as she ducked. "You know what?! I hate you.. and I hate everyone of you! You are too bad!"
"If I am bad, then you are a devil...!!" Teased Sukanya as she got up from the bed. Dragging her legs towards the door, she was about to exit the room when Jodha's phone buzzed. Turning around, she smirked at Jodha, a devilish smirk as she almost jumped on the bed to grab the piece.
"Jalal? That dinner guy?" She questioned as her younger sister snatched the phone from her hands. "This is my phone di!"
"Really?" She cupped her face in mock surprise. "I didn't know that... thank you so much for enlightening me! Anyways.. I have to go.. You see, my husband won't call me like your friend does.. he would just abduct me if I don't get to the station, now!"
She grinned, uttering "That's not abduction di! He would just lift you up and carry you in your world of dreams.. Gosh! That was romantic!"
"Yeah..Romantic.. A Romantic abduction, is it?" She winked, and a moment later, the sisters were nothing but endless bundles of laughter.
"God! I don't even want to leave you guys now... We enjoyed so much! Even Nilay doesn't want to leave. But his office, its just urgh..."
"I know.. Office sucks! Don't go di, please." She requested, flashing her soft brown eyes in a puppy like frame as she pulled her in a quick hug.
"Even I don't want to leave Jodha.. but we can't ignore his work, its important... I am sorry, we'll come back soon, like after a month?" She proposed, a soft hint of smile on her lips.
"That's 30 days! Isn't it a long time?"
"Nope.. that's only 1 month.. Don't see things like 30 days, take it as 1 month.. just a month."
"Just a month.." She reiterated, wondering how her sister could transform into a philosopher in minutes.
"Yeah.. I need to get going now.. Take care, and I love you!" Another sisterly hug followed as the two ladies parted, bidding adieu as she walked with her sister till the stairs.
"Oh damn!" She whispered, rushing back with a speed so fast she doubted her own sanity. "Wasn't it Jalal who called me?? Damn. God, I ignored him!" She muttered, horrified when another thought dawned upon her. "Wait, wasn't I angry on him? Yeah! I was.. He.. That Priya.. Yesss! I ignored him!!" She repeated, this time a devil of a smirk on her lips. "Yay! Way to go girl.." With a mental pat on back, she grabbed her phone once she entered her room, locking the door so none disturbs her celebration.
Hey... So, I want to talk to you.. But you aren't picking up the phone.. That angry?
Yeah.. I am angry.. I am way too angry. Heck, I am freaking out right now. Does that matter to you? She replied to his text with a doubly angry one.
Of course it doesn't.. But as it is, you affect a certain friend of mine, and she's dear to me, so don't upset her!
Godd! Damn this guy! She whispered, letting her fingers roll gingerly on the screen as she typed, Flirting with me? You're impossible.!
It isn't flirting, Miss whoever. Its concern, like C-O-N-C-E-R-N. He giggled slightly, touching the send button.
Is it? I never really knew your friend is in kindergarten.. I assumed she must be in college, a responsible girl who knows how to take decisions..
Seconds later, another text followed from her side.
Like deciding who to talk to? And, who to ignore..
God! He swore, his face partly flushed by her indifferent replies as he thought of a suitable reply. Its wrong to ignore someone for no fault of theirs... At least I thought so. Damn! He sounded serious, but like he cared, the message was sent already, and nothing could bring it back.
Not that he wanted to.
Its my choice! I'll decide who I want to ignore!
Your choice? I thought we were talking about my friend? Like my dear friend?
Dear.. The very word rang alarms in her mind. "It ought to be Priya he's referring to."
are you talking about Priya? :O
No... She isn't responsible like you said, not in the least bit.. There, he'd finally said it!
I'm calling you now, he added Got to clear some things..
She smiled. Less than half an hour ago, she wouldn't budge, and suddenly, like he turned her world upside down, she was waiting for his call!
Her face sported a cheery smile as his name flashed across her screen, she loved the attention he was showering on her. It made her feel good, feel..special.
"Hi.." She spoke softly, careful lest someone listened to their conversation.
"Hi!" He greeted, letting the pen he'd been cradling for so long slip off his palm. Her voice soothed him, she sounded normal. She sounded happy.
"So? What are you doing?" She questioned, mentally making a note not to let their chat steer towards Priya, not by any means.
"Talking to a dear friend of mine." He uttered, almost smirking as he teased. "And you?"
"Talking to someone I was ignoring not very long ago." She teased back. Nah! She wouldn't give up.
"I see... and the reason behind ignoring him was..." He left his words mid air, waiting for her to complete his words, like she always did.
"Because he likes a girl I hate.. that's mean of him!" She pouted softly, angry at him yet again as he drove the conversation towards her. He really can't think of anyone but her.. That's so obsessive! She thought, horrified.
"And how do you know he likes her? Did he tell you that?" He questioned, willing to let the talk take any twist and turns as long as it restored their friendship to normalcy.
"Well.." She gave it a thought. Damn! He was right. "Not really... But then.. Nobody tells that they like someone, I mean its to be understood, right?" Now she wasn't even speaking, but merely questioning as her mind processed it all. Maybe she just got mad at him for no reason.. And, she thought, gulping That was wrong of her!
"That's what I am saying, Jodha.. It's to be understood, NOT to be presumed.. I am sure he didn't give away any signs that he likes her, because I believe he doesn't..'"
"No wait... hang on. I didn't presume it! She said she's a good friend of yours and that I am not the girl you would make your friend... Now what does that mean? She knows you well enough to know your taste in," She would have blurted out girls had she not bit her tongue at the last moment. "friends.." She finished lamely, embarrassed.
"And how did you know that she told you the truth? Some lie detector machine, you've got?" He teased.
"Shut up! I don't know.. I mean she sounded like she knew you.. And she looked like.. I mean... like your type.. I don't know what I am saying but I thought its true! She made it sound like that!"
"God..." He failed to control the long squeezed chuckle as it finally made its way out, leaving her aghast. Was he laughing on her? "I hate you! You are laughing at me... You stupid, moron, idiot.!! I don't even want to talk to you now...! You and Priya can just go to hell!"
She was about to disconnect the call when his sombre, almost serene voice erupted from the other end.
"Hey wait.." He spoke, looking in his room for any signs of help as he finally spotted one. "Actually, Romi made a damn funny face..And I just couldn't control it.. I am sorry.." He pretended to be guilty, smirking as he uttered.
"Really?" She thought, dubious. She wouldn't buy it. "Send me a pic of his so called funny face then.. now.."
"W..What?" He shouted, shocked as Romi sprang up in alarm. Hushing him up, he replied "I can't.. He wouldn't hold that face for me, you see... I mean he made a face and its gone now..!"
"Then get him to make it again, I don't know!" She smirked, looking purely devil in that moment as she tricked him.
"Hey. I wanted to clear some things with you, remember?" He tried to change the topic, hoping to be successful. And he was.
"Yeah.. So as it is, I am really mad at you.. And even though I should stay mad at you for like an hour more or so, I am forgiving you.. Apology accepted!" Finishing off with a wide smile, she waited anxiously for his reply.
"And when did I apologise?" He teased, riling her up had an unparalleled pleasure. And he loved it, totally!
"You did, didn't you?" She murmured innocently, before continuing "or at least you wanted to say sorry, right?"
"I was waiting to say sorry to you.." He smiled, a serene reply that made her heart flutter as her eyes widened a little. "Okay.. so see you at college tomorrow.. Good night!" She whispered.
"Good night, Jodha Singh.."
~~~~
She stepped out of her room, glowing as her eyes recognized the silhouette to be of her best friend, Moti.
Woah! She thought, double checking her expressions to make sure she wasn't mistaken. The same girl who was freaking out like an hour before, seemed like the happiest girl in the planet now. Weird mood swings, eh?
"Hii Moti!" She chirped excitedly, pulling her in a light hug. "It's going to be so much fun tonight! We'll watch our favourite movies!!"
"Yeah.." She fumbled, before throwing her arms around her. "DDLJ! My all time favourite! Oh god I just love Raj!"
"Yesss... But wait.. We'll watch A Walk To Remember Too! I can't let go of Landon, my Landon!" Retorted Jodha, dreamily as she thought of the night that lay ahead, shining and gleaming in their future.
"Gosh Jo! And who would have thought the girl who didn't even like English movies would fall in love with a certain movie.." Before she could finish, Jodha butted in.
"Not only the movie, girl! It's the novel... Sparks' magic at its best! I liked A message In a bottle and the notebook, too.. but nothing can compare to A Walk To Remember, its like the best!"
"I thought it was.." She uttered, innocently.
"Yeah! The bestest!" Winked Jodha, pulling Moti to her room.
~~~
"I just love Landon.. he's the most adorable guy ever!" Whispered Jodha, dabbing her eyes from the hankerchief as the movie proceeded towards the end. With the voiceover of Landon Carter, the curtains finally drew to an end as she let out another fresh surge of tears. Damn! She so loved this movie!
"Jodha Singh, it's just a movie.. Don't cry!" Comforted Moti, embracing her slightly as the girls closed the laptop for a second, pondering what to do next.
"Now what?" Quizzed Jodha.
"DDLJ done, Moti crying done, A Walk To Remember done, Jodha crying done.. now what?" Joked Moti, letting out a soft laugh.
"want to play cards?"
"Noo... that would be boring.. lets play rapid fire!" Moti wildly suggested, her eyes twinkling.
"Not a bad idea!" She approved, jumping up as she threw a pillow in her lap. "So, let's begin!"
"Okay..I'll ask first.!"
"Ohhkay... Ask.." Somewhere she sensed what was to come, but she couldn't lay a finger on it, and so she proceeded with the game.
"Kajal"
"Fashionista"
"Moti"
"Adorable"
"Trust"
"Love"
"Love"
"Landon"
"Landon"
"Perfect"
"Jalal"
"Jalal..." she pondered for a second, what was it that she felt for him? Friendship? Attraction? Dislike? She couldn't pin point, and as Moti finally declared- "Time up Jo!" she felt helpless, it was weird, and what's more- it was positively weird!
"It was a rapid fire Jo, you had to say the first thing you thought when I say the name! Why didn't you say something about Jalal?"
"I don't know..." She sighed, "It was strange.. It wasn't one thought that came in my mind, but thousands of them, I couldn't choose a single one!"
"You had to choose? Like thousands of thoughts in your mind?" She questioned, as her jaw dropped just a little, it was all strange and pretty much complicated for her to understand!
"Yeah.. it was.. silly.." She finished, embarrassed, erupting into a slow chuckle.
"I know.."
~~~
"Godd..." She swore, careful not to disturb her pal's sleep as she tiptoed to get her phone. "I'll kill Kajal if she's messaging me as this time.. !!" Moti made up her mind, blissfully unaware of what was yet to happen.
In haste, she picked up Jodha's phone, her eyes widening as she read the text sent from Jalal- had a great time tlking to you, Jo! Gud Night! ;)
"So it was Jalal... I should have known it!" "That's why," She thought. "Jodha looked so relaxed, so happy when I came over.."
"And the so-many-feelings-part .. it's a bit fishy isn't it?" She wondered, "Is it Jalal after all? The guy Jodha would fall for?"
"No.." She shook her head, greatly embarrassed and surprised at her direction of thoughts, "Maybe talking out their fight was a good option.. She just felt lighter after talking out.. That's alright.. I am just over thinking..."
Her sleepy gaze fell on her friend's asleep figure, sound and at peace, and she smiled. After all, she was her life and she couldn't risk it. Not for anyone.
Joining her back in the bed, she let a small smile touch her lips as she fell in a deep slumber, all signs of worry vanishing off her beautiful face.
~~~
Rays kissing their skin as the buddies nudged each other in sleep, unwilling to sacrifice their sleep as Maina pulled Jodha off the bed. "Jodha, wake up! Its breakfast time already.."
"No mom... please... uhun.. You disturb Moti, not me!" Rolling her eyes as she pulled on the quilts once snatched away by her mother, "I have to study for my exam Jo.. you wake up." Murmured Moti, irritated, elbowing her in the rib as she went on.
"Shut up you lazy head.." Retorted Jodha.
"It's a college day today, Jodha Singh!" Shouted Maina, and with that, both the girls were up in a flash. "Oh damn!" They cursed, and without either of them could gauge, Jodha rushed to the washroom and Moti sprinted to her wardrobe, deciding what to wear, size wasn't a problem as both of them had a same size, and, not to mention, the same taste in clothes!
Pulling out a decent off white top and black jeans for Jodha and an adorable teal dress for herself, she grinned in excitement as Jodha dashed out of the washroom, changing into her clothes for the day.
"This is exactly what I wanted to wear today Moti!" She appraised, amused by her choices.
"I know right.. I am awesome in these things, actually, I am awesome in everything!" Her lashes fluttered in self praise, her hands on her hips, as she continued "Now I better get going, I badly need a bath!"
"Yeah.. you do.." She chuckled.
In ten minutes, the young ladies were ready, brushing their hair thoroughly, with Moti decorating them with fake highlights as Jodha opted for her ever favourite- flower clips.
"So we're ready!" Spoke Moti.
"Yes... let's go now!" Uttered Jodha as she picked out her favourite heels. "We need to get out now if we want to get a taxi.."
"Taxi?" Quizzed Moti. "Jalal is coming to pick us up, you forgot?"
"Really?" She wondered, letting her mind roll back in case she forgot it. "Oh yes, damn, he must be here! Let's get downstairs, now!"
Dashing down the stairs, the duo waved as Jalal smiled. He noted, with great enthusiasm, that Jodha looked extraordinarily stunning in her jeans and top, and somehow as simple an attire like it looked gorgeous on her. Opening the door with a gentlemanly gesture, he winked at Jodha as she flushed, making herself comfortable on the seat.
The ride was a silent affair, or at least for them, since Moti and Jodha chatted, and Jalal cracked a few jokes with Moti. He'd made a conscious effort to not talk to Jodha, he was hoping for a good, alone chat with her, a private one.
"Umm Jodha.." In an attempt to stop her from entering her class, he hopped beside her, smiling as she returned the gesture.
"Yeah?"
"You look.. great!" He whispered, his voice soft as his eyes gingerly took in her beauty.
"Thanks.." She looked down, embarrassed, his voice sending a shiver down her spine as his sincere, unexpected compliment surprised her.
"So?" She continued, unsure how to carry the conversation forward as they both walked to her class.
"Can I kiss you?" He asked, drowning in her eyes, his voice the huskiest she'd ever listened as she stopped, shocked.
"W..What.??" She fumbled, her eyes locked with his, her heart racing with a rhythm so fast that she felt she would collapse right now.
"Hey..I was joking.." He chuckled, and she smiled tenderly. It was a joke, of course, maybe she took it the other way.
Okay.. so the ending was lame.. I know!😆 anyways, its my last working day tomorrow, so you guys can expect 2 updates a week! (don't take it seriously! once a week is all I can manage!😆😆)
Hope you liked it!
Anushka,❤️
"I officially hate Jalal Mohammed." Whispered Jodha, carefully shielding her face by hiding behind her register as the professor went on about something that appeared alien to her. She really couldn't stop thinking about what he said.
"Can I kiss you?" He asked, drowning in her eyes, his voice the huskiest she'd ever listened as she stopped, shocked.
"Hey..I was joking.." He chuckled, and she smiled tenderly.
"Who even makes jokes like that..?" She cursed. "Stupid, stupid guy..."
His voice won't stop playing in her mind, almost like a film on rewind. That rhymed, great! I'm a poet now.. .wow, just great. She sighed dramatically.
"You're lost.." her partner nudged her, and she broke out of her reverie to concentrate on the class.
But somehow, his words were the only ones that made sense.
******
Canteen,
"Finally..." She thought, the first four classes had just ended- leading to a much needed break. It was an embarrassing confession that she made to herself, she didn't pay any attention in the classes. All of that, she added sarcastically in her mind, seemed to be stuck with this one guy who probably didn't even mean anything by that.
And that hurt a bit, because she was trying to convince herself, that it was a joke- he was kidding. But her heart wasn't buying any of it.
A boyish whistle caught her attention, and when she turned, she spotted Romi, Sunny and Rohan, along with a guy she'd never seen before. She looked at the rest in confusion, and as they neared her, the stranger offered a hand.
"hey, I'm Abdul. I'm guessing you know me, since you hang out with Jalal a lot.." He flashed her a cheeky grin, and she smiled politely, until it clicked.
Abdul! That friend who was supposed to go to the movies with us...
"Yes, Jalal mentioned you... By the way, I'm Jodha.." She shook his hand, and then, much to her humiliation, asked "where's Jalal?"
She regretted it the very next second.
"Right behind you, ma'am.." A mischievous laugh boomed, and she instinctively turned back, her eyes widening a bit at his sight.
She'll never get used to his good looks.
"I was just curious..." She tried to act cool, but apparently everyone in the group knew she'd failed. Heck, even she knew she'd failed.
"I'm honoured to be in your thoughts." He teased, and she glared at him before cracking a smile.
"So.. let's order? I'm damn hungry." Romi caught their attention, and Jodha shook her head at his antics.
"I'll just have a coffee.." she shrugged
"Paav Bhaaji for me.." Sunny teasingly lick his lips, causing everyone to erupt into laughter.
"Veg Sandwich.."
"I'll have a coffee too.." Jalal said casually, before looking at her with a sweet smile.
Her heart thudded dangerously in her chest, and she gulped before dodging his gaze.
What just happened?! She thought, panic flooding through her body but also a certain warmth that seemed to come from his eyes.
I've officially gone crazy.
Sometime later,
"Here's the food!!!" Romi announced, walking to their usual seat while balancing the trays.
Jodha furrowed her eyebrows, "the coffee?" She wondered if she was asking for her coffee, or Jalal's.
"That..." Romi began disinterestedly, "the line was so long there, I skipped."
"Jerk." Jodha cursed, before grabbing her purse and deciding to get her drink on her own.
Until someone caught her wrist, pulling her back.
"You wait, I'll get it." A raspy voice cooed, and her eyes had to do a double take when she saw Jalal looking at her wrist, imprisoned within his hold, with an awed expression.
"N..No.. It's fine.. I'll.. I'll go.." She tried to smile.
"The line's really long.." He noted seriously, "it's better if you wait here.."
"It's fine, really.. I'll go.." She did a happy dance in her mind, pleased that she'd got over her stutters.
"or maybe you both can go?" Abdul grinned sarcastically.
"That's not a bad idea either." Jalal agreed, and got up, leaving her to follow.
"So... Priya came up to me today.." he started, looking at her wise a teasing glint in his eyes. Sure enough, her demeanour changed- from shy to angry, it was quite a metamorphosis.
"Oh.." She glared at him, her lips pursed as she stepped forward in the line.
She turned back to glance at him, and when she did, she had to make sure she remembered basic manners of not ogling. There he was, in his simple white T Shirt, blue denim jacket and black skinny jeans- that were extremely tight, by the way- and he somehow still managed to look like a model that belonged on the runway.
He sheepishly grinned, "She looked nice, though."
"I'm sure she did.." She seethed silently
He wisely chose not to chuckle at her enraged expressions, before continuing, "She wanted to talk to me.."
"That's what normal humans do." She quietly murmured, as he looked at her, finally giving in to that chuckle.
"You amuse me.." He concluded, shaking his head a bit as smiled a crooked smile- one she instantly took a liking to.
"I'm glad." She said, her voice low.
After a minute of silence, she ultimately asked the question that was bugging her way more than it should. "So what did she want?"
Hastily, she added, "I'm just curious."
He gave that smile again, before stepping forward and saying, "We should probably order.."
Damn, she cursed the line mentally, wishing she'd moved slowly.
She'd even stop the damn time if she could, just to know the answer.
To him, she replied, "Yes.. we should." She pursed her lips again, nervous- anticipating his answer.
Did she invite him over? Is he taking her out? Are they going to date?
The last question made her eyeballs almost pop out of their sockets. What am I even thinking?
"Jodha?" He nudged her gently, regarding her with an amused smile as he tried to hand her the coffee.
Having subconsciously ignored him, she absentmindedly tried to take the drink, before pulling her hand back. "It's hot.." She hissed
"That's how a coffee should be.." He replied. He tried hard to stop himself from laughing, but something about her seemed extra adorable to him today.
"I'll carry it for you.. let's go back." He suggested, carrying both the drinks. "They probably think we ditched or something." He laughed.
"That wouldn't be such a bad idea, actually." She agreed, murmuring to keep it to herself.
Quickly walking towards their group, they smiled at them before reclaiming her seat. She spared a glance at Jalal, who was seated in front of her.
What did she say? She thought, letting her mind run wild with the possibilities. Forcing herself to recall her and Priya's brief encounter, she tried to remember how she looked.
She'd worn a white mini skirt and a pink, extra tight tank top- no surprises there. Her brown hair was straightened to perfection, and her face- she couldn't even be sure about it- It had too many layers of makeup.
But she was pretty, and sexy- and maybe that was Jalal's type?
She didn't know why, but just the thought of them together made her want to throw up. It just didn't feel right.
After merrily chatting away the break, the group broke up to attend the last few classes left.
He had a crooked smile on his face as he walked back to attend his class. He wasn't sure, but he could definitely guess the effect his words had on her- she surely looked bothered. Upset, even.
He could only hope, his prank would work. He didn't really want to tell her about his short meeting with Priya, but how could he give up on a golden chance to tease her?
That wouldn't be Jalal-like.
Biting his lip to stop laughing, he stepped in, and all the eyes reverted to him. He didn't care, though- he was used to the attention. After all, the blessing of a handsome face comes with its fair share of troubles. Besides, attention never bothered him anyway.
*******
Moti looked at Jodha with suspicion clear in her black eyes, she could tell something was bothering her. What was it, she wondered?
She looked just fine during the break. Pressuring her grey cells, she finally realized that it was sometime around when she vanished with Jalal to get her coffee. Did he say something?
She sighed, feeling for her friend. She knew what she was going through, this attraction was familiar to her. It made sense why Jalal's every little thing altered her mood.
She just hoped she won't get hurt.
"Hey Jo.." She called out, as a not very attentive Jodha turned around.
"Yeah?" She quirked an eyebrow up.
"Nothing... just reminding you, we're gonna be riding with Jalal back home." She shrugged, and watched intently how a glow touched Jodha's face.
She was definitely right.
"Okay.." she pretended to act nonchalant, but her best friend knew she wasn't fooling anyone. She knew better than to think that being with Jalal didn't affect Jodha.
"See you then." She waved, before quickly jogging up to her next class.
*******
"Yess!" She fist pumped in the air. "we're riding with Jalal! I totally forgot... I can ask him then!" The grin on her face couldn't disappear, not that she wanted it to.
And then came the 'but'.
"But Moti is with us too... how do I ask him about that witch in front of her?! She'll definitely know something's up.." she pouted.
Wait? What's up? Why am I so concerned about this witch? Her eyes grew huge. That was one question she couldn't find the answer to.
But she could make up theories, and so she did. I don't care for that witch.. I just don't want Jalal to like her.. she's not good for him.
She nodded to herself, as if convincing herself that it's the only reason.
He's a friend, of course I have to look out for him.
Continuing her stride towards her class, she tried to distract her thoughts, lest she'd end up contradicting them. Alas, she failed.
So if he gets a good girl, you would be happy for him? He conscience taunted her.
"of course.." she muttered. Why wouldn't she be happy?
That's what a 'friend' is supposed to do.
Liar, came that stupid voice again. You'll probably be in a corner crying that it's not you who he's dating.
"probably.." she sadly agreed, before realizing what she'd just admitted. And when she did, the sight wasn't pretty.
Ignoring the weird looks she received, she instantly slapped her forehead, a bit too hard as she winced in pain the next second.
"A more subtle punishment next time.." She promised to herself, before taking a look around her. Absorbed in her thoughts, she hadn't realized how far she'd strayed from where she'd intended to go. Now that she did, it hit her that she'd walked to another building, and she cursed her stars.
She checked the time, she was already late by fifteen minutes- groaning, she took off running to reach her class without further delay, murmuring profanities all along.
She hated how time didn't matter when she was thinking about him.
*******
Relieved that the college was finally over for the day, the young girl waited for the rest to join her as she stood at the gate. The fact that they were riding with Jalal put her at ease, but also some sort of tension crept in. She could only hope no one would notice how weird she was acting.
Maybe she'd really become crazy.
A sigh escaped her mouth as she let her thoughts wander, it was always the one thing she knew she shouldn't think about- him.
"What are you thinking about?" A raspy voice spoke as her head sprang up in attention, and she smiled at Jalal as he casually leaned against the wall.
"College stuff.. how was your day?" She asked politely, putting her phone back into the pocket of her jeans.
"Boring. Yours?"
Well you pretty much ruined my day by being on my mind all the time, but that's okay. She thought mentally. Out loud, she said- "It was fine.." She added a shrug to make it convincing.
"You're zoning out a lot today.." He noted, his eyebrows raised.
"that's nothing.." She said, and took a step forward but tripped, instinctively reaching to the wall for support.
"Clumsy much?" He teased, and as she looked up, she saw his chest rumble with a melodious laugh.
Rolling her eyes, she decided to silently wait- but not for long since Moti joined them sooner than she'd expected. She was glad, though. It was hard to stop herself from asking him the question whenever he was near her.
I should really think of a way to ask him about that and not make myself look like an absolute idiot.
They drove in silence, and before she knew it, he was dropping her home. Sadly, Moti's home came later on in the route, which meant no privacy for the two friends.
"Bye.." she waved at both of them, before entering her society.
*********
The distressed girl threw herself down on the bed, immediately curling up with the pillows as she tried to think of the mess she found herself in. Was there a way out?
"If only he'd stop being a tease about it.. and tell me what she said without embarrassing me.." She cared too much about her self-respect, and it bugged her to even think of getting teased about a matter like this.
While she was busy cursing him, she failed to notice her phone ringing. Snapping out of her thoughts, she reached for her phone, a smile spreading on her face when she saw the name- Jalal.
"Hey.." She smiled, biting her lip. Just when she was thinking about him, he decided to call.
"Hey Jodha.." He breathed out her name, and she could've sworn she forgot how to breathe in that moment.
"So.. what's up?" She asked nervously. All day she couldn't think of anything other than asking him about Priya, but now that she had the perfect chance to do so, she felt her confidence failing her.
"I was thinking about going to meet Priya.. what do you say, should I?" He laughed internally, he could just imagine the effect this would have on her.
In the slightest second, all traces of blush died from her face, replaced by unexplainable anger.
"Why would you visit HER?" She asked bitterly. She could never learn to conceal her emotions.
"Because she asked me to?" It was more of a question rather than a reply, but it made her shoulders droop.
"that's what she wanted to talk about, when she ran into you today?" She asked, her voice small.
"That... and a lot of other things." He replied, fully aware of her emotions right now.
"Oh.." She sighed into the phone, before walking out to get more privacy.
"What else did she say, if you don't mind me asking?"
"Oh.. yeah, that's what I wanted to talk about. You talked with her the other day?" He quizzed.
Jodha gasped, out of all the things she imagined Priya could say, she did not expect her to tell Jalal about their brief encounter. Urgh, I hate this stupid witch.
"...Priya?" She asked, trying to focus back on the conversation.
"Yes Jodha, we're talking about her.." He rolled his eyes
"Yeah.. I did." No point trying to deny it- he probably trusts her more than he trusts me- she thought, and owned up to it.
Ya Allah, this girl will make me go crazy one day.. Jalal thought. Sure he wanted to have fun at her expense, but her brutal honesty only made him respect her more.
"She was telling me about how you called her a sniveling, repulsive bitch.." He exaggerated, eager to see her reaction.
"What?" Her tone was of pure shock now, "No Jalal.. I didn't.. I just told her that I'm your friend.. and that you don't like her.. I didn't use these names.."
"Shh.." He shushed her through the phone, before continuing, "I know.. I told her that my Jo would never say any of that, to anyone. Even to a person as repulsive as her." He laughed, but his words made her heart flutter.
He trusted me!! More than that witch.. he trusts me!! She was pretty sure it was her heart that just did a somersault at those words that'd escaped his lips. Suddenly, Priya didn't matter, her name didn't bug her anymore. He'd indirectly admitted that he trusts her, and he referred to her as 'My Jo'. What more could she want?
"Jodha.. you there?" He asked, curious as to why she didn't reply. He'd clearly expected her to shriek and scream at his response, but all he got was silence.
But all his doubts vanished when she replied.
"Yeah.. I'm here." She spoke softly, but her voice was overflowing with a strange sense of happiness, and of course, relief.
And even though he'd teased her a lot today, the knowledge that he made her smile made his heart skip a few beats, too.
Tell me how was it? I'm kinda liking this chapter, it's fun and, lighthearted? I don't know, I like this chapter.😆
