In his eighteen years of serving Tejawat, nothing had prepared him for this moment. No amount of training and discipline could have prepared Rudra for the feelings that were rushing through him. Nothing could have prepared him for the moment when the woman he loved was in the clutches of the man that was hell bent on killing them. He felt like the air was being vacuumed out of him. The more he tried breathing deeply to calm himself, the more he found himself trying to grasp for more air than necessary. The ground had to have been snatched from beneath him.
He was staring at the picture on his phone. Rudra could see the fear in Parvati's eyes as she was forced to look into the camera. His blood boiled seeing Tejawat's fingers interlocked in Parvati's hair, forcing her to look up. Those chains were binding her completely, not allowing her to move. He had used similar ones on her before when she was his prisoner. They were going to leave marks on her body, Rudra was sure of it. After the long period of observation, he put the phone back to his ear and wasn't surprised that thakur-sa was still on the line.
"She's fine for now," Tejawat stated matter-of-factly.
"What do you want?" Rudra blatantly asked.
"I want-."
Suddenly Rudra heard Parvati yell in the background, "Rudra! Don't listen to him. Don't give him anything!"
Rudra's heart pounded in his ears as he shouted as if she could hear him, "Paro!"
"Enough!" Tejawat yelled.
Rudra jumped as he heard the sound of skin making contact with skin, hard. It was followed by a gasp that transitioned into a whimper. Someone had slapped Paro...his Paro. Oh, how he wished he was there. It would've been a massacre. Rudra began running towards home. He knew she wouldn't be there, but he had to start searching for her somewhere. It was possible that there were some clues left behind as to where she was. He bolted down the streets as he continued talking on the phone.
"Leave her alone!" Rudra yelled helplessly.
"You're not in a position to be giving orders," Tejawat retorted. "We have Parvati."
"What do you want?"
"To teach you a lesson. No one betrays me and gets away with it. You, of all people, would know that."
"Then teach me a lesson. Don't involve Paro in this."
"You see...I can't do that. It's because of her that I lost one of my best men. You, Bheema, Varun...I've already lost three men. Who knows how many more I will lose?"
"You won't lose anymore. She's not a part of this. Leave her."
"I can't."
"She's not involved in this."
"Oh but she is. Did you think I wouldn't notice the sindoor and mangalsuthra?"
Rudra stopped running. He was in the middle of the street, frozen like a statue.
"I know you married her," Tejawat hissed. "I can't believe you did even after I had warned you about love and women. Looks like you will have to learn the hard way."
"You will not hurt her."
"Don't test me. You know what I'm capable of."
"If you hurt her, I will kill you."
"You're threatening me?"
"Yes, and you know I don't give empty threats."
"I know. Especially not when the life of the woman you supposedly love is hanging in the balance."
"Tejawat if you do so much as touch my wife I will-."
"You will what?"
Rudra stopped speaking as he heard Parvati screaming in the background. She wasn't calling out for him, it was just shrieks of pain. It was the familiar piercing cries that he had heard from her when he had watched her mami-sa die. She was in pain, and someone was causing it...and, even though it was against his morals, he couldn't do anything other than plead to thakur-sa to get him to stop.
"Stop it!" Rudra yelled.
The screaming stopped, and Tejawat spoke up again, "You won't do anything. You can't. Not as long as I have Parvati in my custody."
"I'll do what you want. Just don't hurt Paro."
"What I want is to teach you a lesson. Rudra, you were one of my best men, and I will take it into consideration. You will understand that I will be watching every move you make. From this day forth I will not give you a moment's rest. And when the time is right, I will take everything you consider dear to you. I will return Parvati to you soon, although there are no promises that she will be in one piece."
Rudra's heart stopped.
"Feel free to search for her all you want, but you won't find her until I want you to. Don't worry, I'll try to keep her alive. I have to so when you get her back you will worry when my next attack will be and whether or not I will hurt her, whether or not you two will be safe...or whether or not she will survive. Be prepared to live the rest of your life looking over your shoulder. Just remember, it's because of you that Parvati ends up like this."
And with that...the line went dead.
