Finally the words the other man had said registered on his mind. He looked at Geet who was standing there like a guilty child, head bent down drawing circles with her feet.
He thought back to the description that Geet Handa had given him. The height, the color, the eye, the clothes; it all made sense now. He held it in for one more second and then burst out laughing uncontrollably.
When he finally controlled his mirth he found two pairs of eyes looking at him. One was gazing at him sheepishly and the other one looked irritated. Maan took in the empty tea cups on the desk, heard the Inspector laughing... his eyes narrowed on the khaki clad chest of the other man... make that heard Inspector Abhinav Shukla laughing.
It looked like Miss. Handa had made a fan out of the inspector. There had been no need to rush to her rescue after all it seemed.
Just then he caught her looking at him from the corner of her eye. She silently mouthed the word Sorry' at him and then slowly slipped her palm in his and whispered.
"Diez. Thank you so much for coming."
He sighed in silent relief at finding her safe, even as he found himself struggling to hold on to the anger and irritation he had felt at hearing that she had gone to the police station by herself in the middle of the night.
Abhinav looked at the girl in front of him who was looking at Maan with pleading eyes. He had not missed the whispered thanks and that she had called him Diez instead of Maan. He would get to the bottom of this mystery eventually he knew. So the bike that had been brought in that evening when he had just started his shift and which had evoked so much interest in the male population of the station, actually belonged to Maan Singh Khurana. It seemed destiny was playing in their favor after all.
Maan looked at the young inspector in front of him with an assessing gaze. He seemed like a soft touch and very young. Tall frame slouched over, red nose and a goofy smile on his lips. He looked new at his job. Perhaps he could talk him into releasing the bike without having to put down his name on the record. He definitely did not want that record falling in his father's hands. In short, precise words he gave an edited version of the events in the park, while glaring at Geet occasionally. He left his own punches to the troublemaker in the park, out of the equation.
The inspector heard him distractedly while constantly swiping at his nose, than he excused himself for a moment and walked away.
Erect posture, head held back in confidence, purposeful steps and intelligent eyes scanning the surrounding area rapidly, he walked into an inner secure room. There was no trace of the cowardly inspector in this Abhinav Shukla. The only similarity was the antiseptic wipe he pulled out to clean his cell phone, before dialing a number.
"Sir, Maan Singh Khurana is right now in my police station."
"What?!!!!" A shocked voice yelled out from the other end.
"I will have the head of the person who dares to put his name on the record, do you get me? I do not want any public records on that boy's name."
"It is nothing of the sort sir. It is sheer coincidence that brought him in here today." Abhinav explained the whole bike fiasco that had taken place.
"Did he get involved in the fight? How was he?"
"I do not have that information sir."
"What the hell do you know then Abhinav?"
"Sorry sir. Do you think we can approach him now? After all he has walked in here on his own."
"NO!! Absolutely not. That boy is rebelling against his father and authority right now. He is not yet ready to hear the truth. I will approach him personally when the time comes. What about the girl? Is she clean?"
Abhinav thought back to the girl who had walked into the station to rescue a bike and how she'd tricked him into drinking tea while keeping his mind engaged.
"I don't quite know what to make of her sir. One thing I will say about her though is that she is extremely intelligent."
"Get closer to the two of them. Shake hands, kiss hands, hug them, do whatever you have to do. I don't care. Find out everything about her. Do you get me Shukla? The germ phobia you have developed as a psychological defense for keeping yourself hypersensitively aware of your surroundings at all times is what keeps you alive every time you are in danger. However, mind my warning, do not let that same thing stop you from connecting with them. Abhinav you are my best man and I have complete confidence that you will be able to get through to him."
"Thank you sir."
"Now go release that bike and get them out of here."
Abhinav walked back into the room where he had left the two, goofy smile and slouched shoulders, intact.
"Well Mr. K.. I mean Diez right? I heard Miss Handa calling you that. Well then, Miss Handa, Diez, I have given this whole situation a lot of thought."
Maan rolled his eyes and wondered how much thought he could have given to the situation in the less than five minutes he'd disappeared for. He hoped this idiot would let them off easy. He focused on the words of the other man.
"I have decided that since there was no harm done to anybody in this case, I will release the bike to you as of this instant without further hassle or paperwork."
The constables, who had heard from their colleagues about the merry chase they had been led on earlier that day, protested. Not only had the chase been futile, they had been reprimanded by their senior office, coz no arrests had been made. The only thing they'd had in custody was the bike and this moron of an Anti-Septic was letting it go.
"But sir, you can't just release the bike like that."
"Who is going to stop me? You are?" Just for a moment there had been steel in his voice that shut them up. Abhinav knew he was going to be raked over coals by the other Inspector tomorrow, for letting go of the bike he'd confiscated. That would add another feather in his already tarnished reputation.
Perfect.
"Let's go get the bike released" He told the waiting duo.
Geet squealed in delight and rushed towards him with hands outstretched.
Just before she reached him though, Maan grabbed hold of the end tail of her hair, gave a sharp tug and she jerked to a stop.
"Ouch Diez. That hurt. Why'd you do that?"
Wasn't the inspector being a bit too generous? The only reason he could think for his generosity was that the rat had noticed and fallen for the charms of Miss. Handa and wanted to get in her good books.
"You share your hugs a little too freely Miss Handa." He muttered under his breath, then more louder.
"I'm sorry Geet. I didn't mean to hurt you. It's just that I wanted to be the first one to thank our very generous benefactor."
He rubbed her scalp gently, then pushed her behind him and gave the completely un-prepared man in front of him a solid hug, while pounding him hard on his back. He was startled to find a steely muscled body beneath the khaki uniform. He looked at the inspector with narrowed eyes. That was not a body of a gym rat. Steely bands like that were formed only under grueling circumstances and hard training under the baking sun day and night. He would give an arm and a leg to get a body like that. That was the body of a warrior. He looked at the inspector with new respect.
He was pushed back so rapidly by the other man that before he knew what had hit him, he was backed off at least 3ft away. There was a deadly look in the other man's eyes.
Damn it Abhinav!! You almost lost it. It was his instinct to fight back when somebody got too close. It was an instinct for survival that had kept him alive time and again. This is what Sir had been warning him about.
"I am sorry about that Diez buddy. I just don't like to be hugged. You know, too many germs."
Maan's eyes widened in shock at that statement and he nodded his head absently.
"No problem Inspector. I was just expressing my thanks."
"We will take your leave now."
They both wished Abhinav a rapid goodnight after he asked one of the constables to hand over the bike keys to Maan and show him where the bike was located. Abhinav watched as they headed out. He would have to find a way to get in touch with them again.
Just as they were walking past his desk, Maan paused as his eyes went over the Dettol spray and the antiseptic bottle along with the antiseptic wipes sitting on the desk. He paused, then walked over to the desk, pumped a blob of antiseptic on his hand and rubbed it between his palms. He then walked over to Inspector Abhinav again. He held out his hand and Abhinav shook it slowly.
"Thank you, sir. I will not forget this favor. Please do let me return this favor in any way that can."
Just then Geet's voice called out from behind.
"Diez, invite him over to Bowled Caf. Inspector Sir you must come. Diez makes the best chai in the world, though he is a bit stingy with the sugar."
Maan nodded his head.
"Do come sir. I will make absolutely sure to buy a new cup for you and keep it aside. I will make sure nobody else uses it either."
Abhinav looked at him with surprise as Maan nodded.
"My brother was the same. Everything of his was kept separate in the house. Yet he never hesitated to hug me. Not even when I came back all sweaty after playing a winning game and especially after I lost it."
He deserved to know. It was not time yet, but someday Abhiav promised himself, Maan would know the truth about Sameer Singh Khurana.
"Thank you for the invite. I will most certainly come, Diez. Thanks Geet." He called out to her.
"By the way, I have been meaning to tell you, you have a very interesting taste in clothes."
"I don't understand what you mean sir."
Abhinav grinned pointing to the Catwoman T-Shirt with the Batman logo.
It was then that Maan realized that he was still wearing that embarrassing T-shirt.
He looked down at it and groaned, but then a soft smile lit his lips as he drew his palm gently over theT-shirt
"Right now, it is my most priced possession sir, well this and a sketch of the bike"
With that he turned and walked away.
Credit for pic goes to Priya. Just imagine the catwoman pic across his whole chest😆

It was 2:30 AM in the morning. After a tearful union with Hades, they were heading back to Geet's hostel on the bike. He was exhausted. Looking at Inspector Shukla's germophobic tendencies had reminded him of Sameer very much. His heart throbbed with a dull ache. But somehow the fact that a sleepy Geet was plastered to his back with her arms around his middle, soothed him. He found comfort in the hold even if she was not holding him to console him.
She shivered as the chilly wind cut through her thin pajama top from the back.
His lips tightened and he was mad at her all over again. He had forgotten to pick up a jacket in his rush to get to the police station. He slowed down the bike hoping that it would cut down the chill factor.
Just one day had passed since he had really gotten to know her and he felt he had lived a lifetime in that day. He also felt that he had aged by a decade. He groaned out loudly.
"Why do you do this Geet? What is it about this bike that you love so much, that you would go in the middle of the night to a police station, on a so called rescue mission for this piece of metal."
She did not say anything for a moment. He waited.
After some time she sighed deeply.
"I don't remember much about my papa, Diez. The parts that I do remember are all connected to the old Harley he used to ride. It had been thrown away by somebody at the junkyard. Papa brought it home and restored it lovingly. He would spend hours on that bike and I would sit next to him handing him the tools he asked for. Once it was restored, he would ride the bike and I would sit behind him, just like this. He had a big round tummy and my hands would hardly reach half way to the front. We went together everywhere. He would pick me up from school, take me to the market. Go to the beach. Papa always told stories so that I would not fall asleep behind on the bike. I always loved the stories of Greek Mythology he would tell. About Gods and Goddesses, magical beasts and wonderful heroes.
One day he shared the story of a white winged horse named Pegasus, impossibly beautiful. He came into being when the monster Medusa was vanquished by the hero Perseus.
I thought that the story was very similar to the bike papa had rescued. The junk yard a monster and papa the hero Perseus, because of whom the bike had a new life. I asked papa to paint the bike white and named it Pegasus.
One day papa and me were returning from the beach late in the evening. Pegasus was parked on the roadside. We were almost there when papa picked me up and started running. He told me we were playing a game and we crouched down low behind some cars in the parking lot. He hugged me, kissed me, than pulled open the back door of a car. He made me lie down there and told me I was not to reveal myself to anybody until he came back for me shortly. He walked away and I heard the sound of Pegasus turning on. Inspite of my promise I slowly got up and peeked out of the rear window. Papa was riding away on Pegasus. That was the last time I ever saw him. I was five at the time."
Her voice was matter of fact as she shared her past with him, however her arms around his middle that had tightened, until they were squeezing the breath out of him, told him the real story. There were a million questions that were on the tip of his tongue that he wanted to ask. But instead of asking them, he pulled her one of her palms from his middle took it to his mouth and blew warm breath on it. He replaced it after a few moments. He picked up the other one and repeated his actions.
"Geet I don't want you to fall asleep and drop on your head. As it is your head is completely screwed up. God alone knows what will happen if you fall on your head.
"So then why don't you tell me the story of Hades? He is the Dark God of the underworld isn't he?"
