Irrfan-Kangana film is India's answer to French love stories
Roshni Olivera
Director Sai Kabir's upcoming film, Divine Lovers, National Award winners starring Irrfan and Kangana Ranaut, is one of the few projects from all over the world that Film France (the French Film Commission) is associating itself with. Film France, that helped set up this partnership between Paris and Mumbai companies, has made sure that the film is on track to be an official Indo-French co-production and therefore, could be eligible for French Qualification when its production starts. It may thus receive a mainstream cinema release in France and the rest of Europe, which is a rare occurrence.

Divine Lovers is a love story set in the heartland of India and deals with the lives of the lower middle-class. Says Sai, "The film will also star French technicians. It's an attempt at making an authentic Indian film, with French technical and philosophical support."

Irrfan is producing this film along with Shailesh R Singh, who has previously produced films like Tanu Weds Manu, Dil Kabaddi and Shahid, among others. Their French partner, co-producer Leonard Glowinski has headed StudioCanal and Path and produced movies like Oliver Stone's Alexander , Alain Chabat's Astrix & Oblix: Mission Cloptre and Julian Schnabel's The Diving Bell And The Butterfly. Says Glowinski, "What I appreciate is that this film deals with complicated subjects with a comic tone, which will prove effective."

Adds Kangana, "It's exciting for me as an artiste and as an actor. It will be India's answer to edgy love stories that world-cinema viewers enjoy ."

The film that goes on floors March next year, will be shot at various locations across India.

I for one have never enjoyed French films or the "French film philosophy." French films are strange and French filmmakers seem to believe that "different" means better. I don't agree with this arrogant outlook at all and I don't want to see any Indian film to aspire to be a "French" one. I think that this is yet another sign of inferiority complex coming through.

I'm proud of Indian films and what it has to offer and I believe it is better than any other film industry in the world. Indian films will be more and more popular across the globe by being itself and with its own color, taste and outlook on life. Trying to be like others will cause us to lose our uniqueness. I too want to see Indian films in theaters in every corner of the world but trying to be like others in order to achieve this is not right.

And does anyone believe that French filmmakers would have had interest in this film without Lunchbox and Queen?
