Yes, it was that bad. The problem was not that they showed infidelity or grey characters, but that the film somewhere tried to manipulate the viewers into empathizing with those characters (of Rani and SRK). They also tried to justify it as true love and Rani and SRK being 'soulmates' which again the audience didn't like . The love story was hardly a real love story, it was just about two nasty people unwilling to accept their lives or adjust in it, seriously discontented and finding faults in others all the time, then feeling victimized and getting together bcos they need support in their 'miserable lives'. Who is gonna sympathise with them? I actually used to imagine the ending that since the core of their characters never changed, their characters never had a real happy ending and they continued to fight and be miserable after marriage as well, hahaha.

I personally don't think the negative reaction the movie got has anything to do with the time in it was made, but the content. Movies on infidelity or serious issues have go their fair share of appreciation even in those days if they were well made. KANK on the other hand, would be trashed even if it released today.

In the beginning of this movie Kjo tries to (in my opinion unsuccessfully) show that Maya wasn't sure about getting married to Rishi in the first place...maybe she wasn't attracted to him at all. It is kind of implied in the movie where she doesn't like him to touch her or be intimate with her. So in that aspect maybe Dev was the first person she was seriously attracted to...but Dev's character was not a good one by any means. Kjo shouldn't have made him into such a morose person. So from that angle I understand Maya's frustration and sadness in her marriage more than Dev's

It was such a bad movie. I really liked the costumes, songs and everything else, but the story was disaster. SRK and Rani's character were so selfish! I can understand if the other spouse is not understanding enough or just don't get along with, but Preity and Abi's characters were so supportive and nice. I could not feel bad for such selfish characters of SRK and Rani's. I felt bad for Preity and Abi's characters.
Not just that, didn't SRK and Preity have a child too? How can someone justify this??

By the way, Preity looked so cute and beautiful in it <3 I wish she and SRK do another movie .
