Yes, it was that bad. The problem was not that they showed infidelity or grey characters, but that the film somewhere tried to manipulate the viewers into empathizing with those characters (of Rani and SRK). They also tried to justify it as true love and Rani and SRK being 'soulmates' which again the audience didn't like . The love story was hardly a real love story, it was just about two nasty people unwilling to accept their lives or adjust in it, seriously discontented and finding faults in others all the time, then feeling victimized and getting together bcos they need support in their 'miserable lives'. Who is gonna sympathise with them? I actually used to imagine the ending that since the core of their characters never changed, their characters never had a real happy ending and they continued to fight and be miserable after marriage as well, hahaha.
I personally don't think the negative reaction the movie got has anything to do with the time in it was made, but the content. Movies on infidelity or serious issues have go their fair share of appreciation even in those days if they were well made. KANK on the other hand, would be trashed even if it released today.
