The portrayal of of women and their clothes in Indian soaps

Hey guys, just going from something I said in another post - I have noticed in Indian TV dramas, the way women are portrayed in these shows are completely off in my opinion.
Girl who wears salwar suit = "Good" girl
Girl who wears dress/ western clothes = "Bad" girl

I was just wondering if you guys noticed this too and your thoughts about it.

I have noticed this in a lot of shows, not just this one, and so far only Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke (Gunjan) and Qubool Hai (Zoya) have been able to have a female lead who has been able to keep up her dress style and still be "good". Whereas I noticed in Ek Mutthi Aasmaan, Kalpi used to wear skirts, tops and pants at the beginning of the show, and then when she got with Raghav, it was suddenly all just salwar.

I just think people shouldn't be defined by the clothes they wear, you can still be "good" wearing a salwar or western dress. I just wish these dramas would progress with the time and realise this too.

I'd just like to say I am in no way trying to offend anyone on here by saying this - There is absolutely nothing wrong with wearing traditional clothes (salwar suit/saree) or western clothes (dress/jeans).

Agree with you and have noticed it often. It's sad though!
I think it has to do with the general attitude in our society. Haven't you heard even politician making these appalling remarks that women who dress in western clothes attract unwanted attention etc.

But let me point out one good thing in this soap if you look at it from another angle. They are breaking at least one stereotype with Pragya's character. They are showing that a girl who wears the most modest clothes and wearing glasses can also be attractive and in fact will end up having a rockstar fall for her.

That's true. Though I wish he could have fallen in love with her under normal circumstances, not some sham marriage where he's torturing her. It's still a bit shallow considering he thinks she is unattractive. I can't wait for a show where the lead male (or any male character) notices a glass-wearing girl at first glance as attractive. I just hope they keep her glasses and they don't disappear over time, like with other characters in these shows.

Abhi says she is unattractive. The situation is such that he can't speak any good of her anyway.
Remember one of the first scenes where she talks against Abhi in his concert, he later thinks that girl is interesting.
And whenever he has met her even before wedding, the eye locks, his curiosity for her etc. speak otherwise.
The message is that he was always drawn to her.

I think he will fall in love with her while she still wears glasses.

However, as a Sriti's eyes' fan, I wish we get to see her without glasses too.. her eyes are so beautiful and glasses do take away something!

I think that his curiosity is more to do with that fact that he's never experienced any girl talk back to him, or go against the things he's said so he's intrigued with her guts and confidence. But I get what you mean.

And yeah, definitely think if he falls for her, it will be with her glasses and all - I think her glasses have become a "defining" factor for her character. Plus, we've seen how much she can't see without them, so I think (hope) the glasses are here to stay. I think she looks pretty with or without them :)

That's even better way of getting attracted to someone right, more than the superficial looks/sexy outlook.

Obviously if someone is dressed sexy, it does catch one's attention easily. But I like that they are showing Pragya still draws Abhi's attention beyond looks.

I have nothing against glasses at all and I wear them too but I really wanna see Pragya sans glasses too sometimes.. The actress has big eyes and they are so pretty.. would be nice if she wears contacts sometimes like I do.😆

Very true - I think it's the best way to notice someone, beyond their looks. My problem is that they reinforce this stereotype that girls with glasses, books etc are "nerdy" and "unattractive". And it's not just Abhi, you also see it at the beginning of the show that when some boy and their family come to see Pragya, her mother always hides Bulbul from their sight.

I think it's also breaking that stereotype in the end with having a rockstar, who has supermodels at his disposal, rather prefer the "nerdy/unattractive" girl!
