As is my daily ritual went up to JKR.com today and what did I see.

Godric Gryffindor

Medieval (precise dates unknown)
One of the four famous Founders of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Godric Gryffindor was the most accomplished dueller of his time, an enlightened fighter against Muggle-discrimination and the first owner of the celebrated Sorting Hat.

Now is it just me or did you also notice that part where she says that Godric Gryffindor was the FIRST OWNER (note here not the only owner) of the Sorting Hat.

Now I am thinking like..... How Curious !!!!!! you may ask why.....

Simply bcoz we all know JKR is a wonderful manipulator of the english language, and an awesumlly excellent player of words.... to her credit I cannot dare think that this was a typo.... or an over-looked mistake on her part.... that too barely 3 weeks before Book 7's release... it simply doesn't match up for me.......

I think she's given that out deliberately.... meaning there were more owners of the Sorting Hat after Sir Godric passed away... maybe it was passed away....

Now JKR has already cleared that neither Harry nor Dumbledore are descendants of Gryffindor. also JKR now says that he (Godric) was the first owner of the Hat.

Who were the others apart from Gryffindor......????

I am dying to find out... who the Hat was with.... in between Gryffindor and Dumbledore.

what are your thoughts.

U do make sence n that does not seem to be a typo but a brillianty written sentence....

N I think that the hat was passed down to all the headmasters of Hogwartz...

If not I am sure that all the mysteries will be solved in the last book..

Heh!, I jus had a tought with all the thing Jo has to solve.... how long do u think the actual book will be 😆 😆
I hope its as long as Eldest 😆 that would be fun..

lol ahhh yes it is def. not a typo...but i am guessing that it remained in hogwarts after Godric gifted it with the power to sort people...

but by being in hogwarts, does that mean that every headmaster in a sense "owns" it? got no clue

btw, whilst true JKR did say that harry and dumbledore aren't "descendants" of Godric ji 😆 ...it has been suggested by many in cyberspace that it could be possible for harry, and even dumbledore to be his 'heirs' coz maybe, an heir of Gryffindor doesn't mean that he/she shares the same bloodline...it could be that he/she possesses the very qualities that Gryffindor stood for, coz it doesn't seem that he was much concernd about 'blood' like Slytherin.

anyways, ahhh gosh 3 weeks!!! u know wat, 7/7/7 would have been the ideal date!!! isnt 7 a powerful number? Plus...that would mean that only a week would be left lol....ah gosh

oh btw, i'm Ena...new to this forum... 😛

She was going to release Deathly Hallows on 7/7/07 as it was avery symbolic day...or even the OotP movie was going to be released on that day...
But the days were changed because 7/7 was the time when terrorists had blown up the London Underground...so she changed the date, both for the book and the movie
welcome to the forum ena!

As for ur question tejas...I feel that b/w Gryffindor and Dumbledore, any of the Headmasters and Headmistresses of Hogwarts could have owned the hat; it seems logical that the Hat was passed on from Headmaster to Headmaster, since it was used for sorting the students and was required every year.😛

There have been important wizards/witches amongst the Hogwarts Heads, who could be of significance in Deathly Hallows.

Also, wouldn't it be interesting to know what else the Sorting Hat hides within itself...like it had kept Gryffindor's sword? Maybe other items belonging to Gryffindor or any of the other founders?

I surely feel the hat will make a come back!

Nice observation!!
but i dont think its too significant, cos it was passed from headmaster to headmaster..godric was just the original owner..it was mentioned in one of the sorting songs...godric whipped me off his head...
but on the other hand im sure the hat has great significance..but whether it has anything to do with its ownership i donno ..!
we know that the hats been in hogwarts every year since godric enchanted it..
now if there had been something abt godric NOT bein the first owner it would have been interesting...to wonder who owned the normal hat[at that time] before godric did?

Ohkay, tejas took some interest to post it, let's not discuss the release date shall we? 😕

And okay, that must have taken a lot of observation skills!!! But yep, first owner... Hmmm, i thought the sorting hat belonged to no one, and was just a hat on it's own... But Harry isn't a descendant yes... But if it's been going only through headmasters, then there's no point. If it's not only headmasters, then is there any chance Tom Riddle could have got his hands on it?? (Except during his dorting, blah)

actually i dont think Tom Riddle would ever have managed that. i doubt he was ever able to lay hands on anything Gryffindor. Gryffindor rises against Slytheirn, it was due to the value differences between the two founders that Slytherin left...etc etc so i don't think that Tom Riddle will ever get his hands on anything Gryffindor.

and anyways, the sorting hat rests in Dumbledore's office...don't think Tom Riddle in his schoolin years could have had access to it, and then when he was Voldemort...then definately no!:P

this surely is a subtle clue . but i am not ignoring the possibility that the Ministry of Magic might have possessed the sorting hat for some period of time.

If voldemort have had acquired the sorting hat, he might have stole it anyways. or even if he had made it a horcrux and left it in hogwarts, it would have affected the people coming in contact of it in someway ...
