Part 8: Baant mithaaiyan, lakh vadhaiyan..
 (Author:ElireEli..âď¸)
Baldev threw the mobile on the bed and laid back on the sofa resting his legs on the table in front. The Roka ceremony was scheduled for today evening which would officially seal their union and then tomorrow was his engagement and in a span of four days his marriage. His eyes quickly scanned the room and he left out a sigh. Only after a few days this would no longer remain his room anymore and it will become their' room where they will spend the best times of their lives. He had already got a teaser of the same last night when he had almost...his heart fluttered at the thought...he had to be more careful for the next few days. He couldn't let just his inner wild desires overpower him yet. But somehow whenever she was near him, he felt drugged and was pulled like a moth to a burning flame. He was so lost in her sweet memories that neither did he realize how time flew by nor did he notice a sulking Bansuri entering his room.
Bansuri entered his room and exclaimed in irritated at the scene in front of her eyes.
"Hayoo Rabba! Yeh ki halat bana rakha hain tune Baldev! Abhi thoda der main itne saare mehman aane wale hain ghar pe aur itna sara kaam padha hain" ("OMG! What mess you have created in here? The guests will be coming in very soon and here is so left work left to do")
She looked at the muddled up bed and proceeded to set it right.
Baldev was broken from his trance at the shrill voice of his mother and stood up and thought of pacifying her..." Beeji aap na tension na lo...aur kuch dino ke baad ke aapke madad vaste hogi na Veera" ("Mother, don't worry. After a few days Veera will be there to help you")
"Naam na le Baldev tu uska." Bansuri said visibly irritated, "Kitne sapne the mere ki videshi kudi nu teri voti banayungi aur pure pind nu dikhayungi par tune to mere saare sapno pe raita phaila diya. Pata nahi kya jaado karke mere ladle puttar nu mere khilaaf kar diya." ("Don't remind me of her. I had such pleasant dreams of getting you married to a foreign girl and showing her off to the whole village but you have spoiled all my dreams")
Bansuri was straightening the bed sheet when her hands hit a tiny hard object and as she held it up in her hands her eyes widened and she roared "Yeh ki hai Baldev? Tere bistar pe ye ladkiyon ki baliyan ki kar raha hai? Ab tu us Veera ke baliyan liye ghum raha hai? Hayo Rabba. Abhi se yeh haal hain to pata nahi is ghar main ane ke baad woh to mere sar pe nachegi...aur mere puttar uske haan main haan milayega" ("What is this Baldev? Earrings from your bed? You are carrying her earrings from now? OMG. If this is the condition before marriage then post marriage she will rule over me... and my son will support her")
Baldev gulped down the nervousness he felt as he thought how scandalous it would be if his Beeji came to know that her would-be-daughter-in-law was sleeping peacefully with her legs wrapped around him on this very bed. He quickly tried to divert the topic and said,
"Aap bhi na Beeji kahan ki baat kahan tak ghasit kar le jaate hoon. Yeh Gunjan ki hai..." ("Why are you dragging this thing so much? It belongs to Gunjan")
"Jhooth mat bol Baldev. Gunjan ko ghar aye ek hafta ho gaya hai." ("Don't lie Baldev. Gunjan has not visited since one week")
"Nahi Beeji woh pehle jab ayi thi tab bhool ke chali gayi thi. Usne mainu kaha tha usko de ke ana ke liye..par main bhool jata hoon na isliye maine bistar pe rakha tha taki mujhe yaad rahe." ("No Mother she left it here when she had visited us last and had asked me to return it. But since I keep forgetting I had kept it on the bed so that I remembered to return it to her.")
And he snatched the earring from his mother's hand. Bansuri kept on looking at him not at all convinced with his explanations. As if by God's grace, Balwant came to his rescue and called out to Bansuri
"Aaap ithe hoon Bansuriji. Chaliye mehman a gaye hai...aap cheeti cheeti jaake unka swagat karo...mujhe sehar bhi to jaana hai unguthi kharidne vaste. Aur phir sham ko Ratan parjayi bhi ayenge Roka ke liye"
("You are here Bansuriji. Come the guests have already arrived. Go quickly and welcome them. I have to go to the city as well to buy the ring. And Ratan parjaiji is going to come in the evening for the Roka.")
"Haan chaliye main ati hoon" ("Yes I am coming")
Bansuri departed passing him a suspecting glance as she left the room. Baldev heaved a sigh of relief and looked at the earring in his hand and asoft smile kept crept over his lips.
Veera sat in front of the mirror clinging the beautiful wedding suit her Veerji had selected for her, blushing slightly as the realization dawned on her that finally she was going to be Mrs. Veera Baldev Singh and closed her eyes to feel the his warmth which even his name would capable of providing. She had never imagined that it would sound so good. Everything was so perfect...her Veerji had decided to give her a grand wedding and the whole house was already overflowing with guests and their constant chit chats. She herself had been so busy since morning. As soon as Bansuri tayiji left after taking her finger's measurement for the engagement ring, she had accompanied her Veerji and Gunjan Bhabhi to the city to do all the last minute shopping. And in the evening as the guests started coming, the Roka ceremony had started amidst loud singing and dancing as trays laden with goodies from the groom's family filled up the decorated courtyard. Finally she had managed to find some time among all this hustle bustle and had sneaked into her room to ponder over the happiness that she felt in her heart. And as she remained engrossed in her thoughts reflecting how life was turning into a sweet adventure for her, she failed to notice the dark figure that crawled through her window and came and stood behind her. As she opened her eyes with a faint smile on her lips her eyes widened as she looked at the reflection of the figure who stood with a naughty smile plastered on his lips. She turned around and exclaimed in a nervous tone
"Dev...tu itthe ki kar raha hain woh bhi itne raat ko...tennu nahi pata ki ghar main itne saare mehman hain koi vekh lega to siyappa khada ho jayega. Ab ja yahan se." ("What are you doing here at this time of the night? Don't you know there so many guests around, it will a big nuisance if anyone sees you.")
And pushed him towards the window. Baldev stood firm and held up his hand in the air and said, "Nahi jata main. Ki kar legi?" ("I won't go. What would you do?")
He winked at her teasingly and taking a few steps towards her said in a teasing tone," Waise kal to badi sherni ban ke mere kamre main ghus gayi thi...ab tennu kyun dar lag raha hai" ("By the way yesterday you had been so brave and entered my room. Why are you afraid now?")
A slight blush covered her cheeks as she remembered how she had behaved last night and she took a step back and collided with the stool in front of the dressing table and fell down on it unable to balance herself. She knew she had crossed the line of decency last night but did Baldev misinterpret as a wrong signal from her end and had come here to complete the unfinished task? She sat still as she felt tingling sensations flooding her entire being and she opened her mouth to breathe in to control her untamed thoughts. Baldev came near her and knelt down in front of her and said in a husky voice which made Veera's insides melt like ice, "Tennu darne ki zaroorat nahi hai Veera. Mujhe pata hain tujhe sab kuch sahi tareeke se chahiye ...isliye yeh vada hain tere Baldev ka tujhse ki shaadi se pehle main aisa kuch nahi karunga jo theek na ho". ("You don't need to be afraid Veera. I know you want everything in the proper way. So this is a promise from your Baldev that he would never do anything before the wedding would be improper")
And gently cupping her face with one of his hands, he nodded his head reassuringly and forwarded his other hand with the earring in it. "Main to bas tennu yeh wapas karne aya tha...aur tennu iik vadi vekhne aya tha...subah se yeh sona sa mukhra vekha nahi tha na maine to mainu neend kaise ati?" ("I just came to give you this...and to catch a glimpse of you...had not seen this beautiful face from the morning so how would I have gone to sleep?")
Veera eyes filled with tears of happiness which she fought back as she did not want to spoil the moment and kept staring at the handsome face in front of her and thanked her stars that she had been so lucky to get such a gem of a guy to spend the rest of her life. Baldev looked into her kohl rimmed dark eyes and could see the love and warmth for him and felt an urge to hold her tight in his arms never to let go off her ever, to kiss those half parted rosy lips to let her know how much she meant to him, to kiss away all per pains and sorrows that had dared to come near her and to be lost in her long sweet smelling tresses and forget everything that kept him away from her. She would completely be his in a couple of days but still these few days were making him impatient. He knelt down a bit closer towards her as they sat silently staring into each other's eyes relaying the unspoken emotions they had hardly ever conveyed to each other. As he sat there drowned in her deep eyes unaffected by the pain he felt at his knees, he was suddenly shaken out of the trance by the sound of the clock striking midnight. And as though suddenly feeling conscious of the close proximity they were sharing and the way his body was reacting he thought it was better for him to leave lest he won't be able to keep his promise he had made moments ago to his Veerakdi. He stood up and bidding a silent goodbye to his lady love and crawled out of the window.

Baldev sat sipping tea at his favorite joint still tensed about the big night. And on top of that he had promised Veera last night that he would do everything in the proper way. But till now he was clueless about everything. And today evening was his engagement ceremony. Beads of perspiration formed on his forehead as he thought nervously as to how he would proceed with the big night. Whom will he sought help from? His train of thoughts were interrupted by the loud chuckling of Jaggi and Billa as they approached him. "Oye pajji. Aaap abhi bhi pareshan ho? Maine ne na apke pareshani ka haal dhoondh liya hain" ("Brother, you are still worried? I have found a solution to your problems"), Jaggi exclaimed victoriously winking at a confused Billa.
"Is baar kya ghunghat ke niche bakri hai? Oye nahi sunni mainu tumhari bakwaas chudail aur nagin o ki kahani. Mainu pareshan mat karo. Akele chadh do mainu" ("I am not interested to hear your foolish stories of witches and snakes. Don't disturb me. Leave me alone")
"Paaji...aap sun to lo ek baar...ye tareeka na badiya hai aur ek daam kaam karega" ("Brother...listen to this once. This idea is great and sure to work")
"Jaldi bol. Mainu ghar bhi jaana hain bahut sara kaam hai" ("Tell me quickly. I have to go home as there are a lot of work pending")
"O Paaji...O Bhupinder hain na, uski na shaadi hain aap ke shaadi se ek din pehle"... (" Bhupinder is getting married the day before you are getting married")
"Haan Paaji ye sahi rahega.." Billa interrupted without allowing Jaggi to complete his statement, "Aap na usse pooch lena. Wo sahi banda hai bata bhi dega". ("Yes this will be perfect. You go and ask him. He is a cool guy he will help you out")
"Oye nalayako. Tumhare akal kya ghas charne gayi hain? Ab to mujhe paka yakeen hain tum logon ke upar ke hissa main Rabji ne gobar bhi nahi dala hai...pura khali hain...bas hawa hai. Oye main apne shaadi ke din shaadi chodke us Bhupinder ke ird gird ghumonga usse yeh poochne ke liye ki tune kal kya kiya. Bas bakwaas karwa lo tum logon se" ("You fools. Have you lost it? I am sure now that God has not even stuffed cow dung in your heads, it is filled with air. I will leave my own marriage and roam around Bhupinder to ask him what he did the day before? utter crap")
Baldev stood up from the bench and was leaving when Jaggi pulled him back and said,
"Arre nahi paaji...aap uski baton pe dhyaan mat do. Woh to bakwaas karte rehta hai...aap ne meri gal suno...main ki keh raha tha...Bhupinder ki shaadi hain isliye uska chachera bhai aya huya hai seher se...mere se bahut acchi dosti hain...to parso usne koi daru sharu ki party rakhi hai apne doston ke liye...to aap wahan usse pooch lena." ("No Brother. Just ignore his words. He just utters crap. You listen to me. I was saying that Bhupinder is getting married and so his cousin brother from the city is here. Bay after tomorrow he is throwing a drinks party for friends so you can ask him there.")
Baldev pondered over his words and said, "Waise yeh baat tune thik thak hi bola hai...waise bhi woh seher ka hai to use pata hoga ki kudiyon ko kaise impress karte hai suhagraat pe." ("You are right to some extent. He is from the city so he must be knowing how to impress girls on their wedding night.")
He chuckled at the thought and nodded his head and his eyes twinkled as he finally saw a ray of hope.
As the auspicious moment arrived in the evening, all the relatives at the bride's house welcomed a smug Baldev dressed in a dark brown sherwani rich with black resham embroidery and bead works paired with a black silk churidaar along with the other groom's relatives entering the house carrying baskets of dried fruits and other gifts for the bride's family. As the ceremony started, Ranvi applied a tikka on Baldev's forehead solemnizing the ceremony and hugged him with eyes filled with tears of happiness. Sometimes silence speaks much more than words can ever say and he smiled silently at Baldev and conveyed that he had full trust on him that he would treat his adorable Veerakdi like a delicate flower. Ratan came forward and blessed him too. As the elders finished blessing the groom, Baldev impatiently scanned the crowd desperate to get a look of Veera and as his eyes wandered towards the staircase he was transfixed by what his eyes beheld. He had never imagined in his wildest dreams that Veera would look so ethereal in the peach colored suit with floral designs she was wearing coupled with very light makeup and ornaments and her open long black stresses fluttering in the air. As she came and sat beside him for the chunni' rasam he could not help but stare at her mesmerized with his mouth half open. Veera gave a side glance at him and blushed a little. Bansuri unwillingly came forward and draped the red ornate chunni over the blushing bride before gifting her jewelry and putting a tiny dot of mehendi on her palm and then gave Baldev the engagement ring. As the couple exchanged rings the crowd rejoiced and music filled the air. Baldev looked at Veera and said, "Maine bola tha na ek din aise hi lal chunni urake le jayunga tainu..." and winked at her. Veera bit her lower lips in embarrassment and Baldev could not help notice it. His heart fluttered at her action increasing the yearning for her manifolds and he looked away trying to fight the emotions that kept tagging at his heart and kept them under control by constantly reminding himself of the promise he had made to her.
As the guests prepared to have dinner before the night ended with the final skit Veera had planned for Ratan's birthday, Veera dragged Baldev to a lone corner unnoticed by the prying eyes. And on reaching the secluded spot she gave a victorious smile glad to be back to her usual chirpy self - much to the contrast of blushing bride she was a few minutes before. "Finally...yahan hume koi nahi pareshan karega...mainu na tere se ek zaroori gal karni hai...woh..." ("Finally...nobody is going to disturb us here...I had to talk to you regarding something important") she spoke as she came closer to him. Beads of perspirations began forming on Baldev's head as he gulped nervously at the close proximity. He slapped himself infinitely in his mind for the wild thoughts that were plaguing him. Has this girl gone nuts? I am trying so hard to control myself and she is here hell bent on testing my patience. He pushed Veera a bit far off with his hands.
"Dekh Veera maine tennu kal raat bola tha na ki main sab kuch tere tareeke se karna chahta hoon. Isliye tu na mere itni kareeb mat aya kar. Samjha kar mainu takleef hota hain" ("See Veera, I had promised you yesterday night I would do everything in the proper way. So please don't come so near to me. Try to understand it becomes difficult for me"), he almost begged an utterly confused Veera. As Veera was about to say something in reply, Jaggi exclaimed from behind, "Kya paaji, aap itthe ho aur hum aapko kab se dhoondh rahe hain. Woh Bhupinder ka bhai se milke a raha hoon... Par lagta hai aap ki woh wali pareshani ka haal parjai ji ne dhoondh li hain...phir to abhi aapko hum sab ki salah ki zaroorat nahi padegi." ("Brother. You are here. And we were searching you from so long. But looks like sister-in-law has already found a solution to your "that" problem. Now you don't need our suggestions")
He gave a loud chuckle as he looked at a smiling Billa to join in his joke.
Veera's eyes widened at she realized what Jaggi meant and with an irritated face she jerked Baldev's hand from her shoulders and turned away. Baldev who was yet to realize what was going on, kept looking from Jaggi to Veera with a blank expression and after a few seconds when he realized the blunder his dear friend had done he ran after her.
"Veera, meri gal to sun...yo na bakwaas kar rahe the..." ("Veera, listen to me. They are just speaking nonsense") She cut him short by pointing her fingers at him and retorted back, "Baldev. Chup kar. Mazaak ki bhi ek haad hoti hain. Maine kabhi socha bhi nahi tha tu yeh sab apne doston ke sath discuss karta hain. Ab shaadi ke baad bhi sab kuch unse share karega? " ("Shut up Baldev. There is a limit to everything. I had never thought that you would discuss all these things with your friends. Will you share everything with them post marriage too?")
She felt utterly disgusted and turned away leaving a perplexed Baldev scratching his head. "Ab ye ki naya siyappa ho gaya? Ek to meri pareshaani ka haal nahi mil raha upar se Veera bhi gussa ho gayi. Par mainu use natak shuru hone se pehle hi manana padega" ("Now what is this new problem. As it is I have still not found a solution to my previous worries, and now Veera is mad at me as well. I have to pacify her before the skit starts")
Determined he proceeded to the room where Ranvi and Gunjan were getting ready for the skit.
