Chapter 6
Quick and load footsteps alerted Pragya to the approach of her husband.
Oh no, he's angry isn't he. Pragya sat up straight, reading herself for the onslaught of accusations that were about to be thrown her way. She had gotten used to the taunts that always came when something went wrong in the house, though it was never her fault.
Even if Bulbul had told him the truth, he would still come in here angry that she had deceived him, accuse her of lying to him so she could marry him and still allow Bulbul and Purab to remain together. It wouldn't matter that she had sacrificed her own happiness for the sake of her loved ones, it wouldn't matter that all his accusations would have been false. She had still lied to him and that was all he would see.
But she wasn't going to take it quietly this time. With the truth out, her marriage would collapse soon enough so why shouldn't she defend herself? Let him come in here, she thought, I've been waiting to give him a piece of my mind.
Abhi rushed into his room, mind full of questions and ready to demand answers, when he was stopped in his tracks by the look on his wife's face.
He had seen her irritated, angry even, but he had never seen this kind of rage in her eyes. This should have clued in him into the fact that he should think through what he was going to say, but Abhi hadn't changed that much.
"Why did you lie to me?"
Pragya mentally rolled her eyes. God, he's so predictable.
"To protect my family," she said, daringly looking straight at Abhi, challenging him to call her a gold digger or another one of his favorite insults.
"Why didn't you say anything before the wedding?!" the whole point of this marriage was to torture her and make Purab accept Aaliya. But if she wasn't the girl he was in love with, why did he get married to her? "This marriage was for nothing."
"For nothing?! This marriage means everything to my family. This marriage is the reason why our families downstairs have been smiling. I knew you were selfish and self-obsessed but I thought you would have at least realized what this marriage means for your Dadi." How dare he say that she had gone through this torture for nothing, that it had been pointless for her suffer quietly?
Pragya slowly got up and walked closer to Abhi. This time the proximity didn't frazzle her, mess with her senses; instead it fueled her anger and strength. "Don't blame me for your blind faith in your sister's lies. If you had asked questions in the beginning without going straight to planning revenge, none of this would have happened. So before you ask me any questions or accuse me of lying, why don't you ask your precious sister what exactly she saw?"
Abhi was rendered speechless, not by the accusations against his sisters, but by Pragya's sudden show of will. Maybe he should have gone to Purab straight away, demanding more details before he decided to so thoroughly humiliate Pragya.
"I'm going to get ready. I'm sure you have plenty to think about" Pragya walked to the bathroom slowly, leaving Abhi behind her to contemplate her words.
He sat down on the bed, putting his head in his hands. He had come up here to demand answers from Pragya, expecting her to admit that she had lied and deceived him, though not in the way he had thought.
But it was his own fault for not expecting her anger. How could he think she shouldn't break eventually, especially after she knew he had been told the truth yet was still accusing her of being a deceiver? She said she had done this for her family. Wasn't that why he had done all of this? He thought she was torturing him in this relationship when she in fact was the one suffering for absolutely no reason. All those things he had said to her without any proof other than a photo his sister had showed him.
He had to fix this now before his plan for revenge caused anyone anymore pain. Abhi looked up at the bathroom door. How would he make up for all the accusations, emotional and even physical pain that he had caused her? He would have thought it simple if he hadn't seen her rage today. This wasn't going to be easy, but he would have to try. He might be self-obsessed but he didn't go out of his way to hurt an innocent person, which was what she was, innocent and caring, even if she didn't get anything in return.
Abhi knew that he would make it up to her, but first he would think it through. Acting before thinking had caused enough trouble already, and he wasn't about to make the same mistake again with Pragya.
But first, downstairs were wedding preparations that were going on for a marriage that was built on lies. Even though his marriage with Pragya was founded on even worse, he wasn't going to let two more people make the same mistake.
Determined, Abhi got up and began to walk out of the room. He stopped at the door and glanced again towards the bathroom. One step at a time Abhi, you need a plan before you embark on that mission. He turned away and headed downstairs, feeling the expectant eyes on the guests.
