Talking point: with Gautami gadgil kapoor
She's been Tulsi Virani for a week. If the TRPs are any indication, the audience isn't missing Smriti Irani
Piyush Roy
A week into the role, what are the reactions now?
It's been nice, humbling and overwhelming. Though I was mentally prepared for a lot of flak, it's quite surprising to see how fast the audience has accepted a new face for an iconic character. The other day I was at the Breach Candy Hospital and a few people came up and complimented me. Unlike Smriti Irani's firebrand Tulsi, you come across as meek and submissive.
The script has gone through a lot of transformations post my entry. My character is returning to the Virani house with a changed face, it has do a lot of convincing to be accepted by the family. If I try to be domineering now, disgruntled family members can ask me to leave. Right now my character doesn't have a firm ground to stand on, but once that's achieved, a turnaround will follow. Also, the focus now is on rekindling Tulsi's bond with Mihir and Baa. It's the circumstances that have made Tulsi weak and even Smriti in my place would have gone through the same lows.
Are you happy returning to the TV as a 60-year-old while still in your early 30s?
I couldn't have asked for a better or larger character than Tulsi to play on Indian TV. Most of my contemporaries and actors younger than me today are playing mother and grandmother roles. I've been getting compliments saying I look better when older. Smriti had established fabulous personal relation with her Kyunki co-actors. What are your equations?
I have a great bonding with Sudha Shivpuri who plays Baa, since we have a lot of scenes together. I'm equally comfortable with my onscreen husband Ronit Roy and son Hiten Tejwani. As for the rest, I've known them for ages and there's no reason for me to feel like a new entrant. What's the update on your husband Ram Kapoor's rumoured entry in Kyunki?
Nothing to that effect is happening right now, but you never know what will happen with Balaji Telefilms and Ekta Kapoor; they are known to jolt the audience when least expected. I was surprised to hear rumours that he'd enter the serial before me, but he was in Turkey then.

Thanks. Can't believe people complimented her...but I guess I do want to see the "transformation" in the script when she will play a "firebrand 'Tulsi'".

Really unbelievable how fast the audience accepted her that some people have actually already started complimenting her!

& hello Gautami, your character has been made mild & weak to suit your personality & not becoz family members might ask you to leave. That's what the production house of KSBKBT said recently.

Article is good interview is not real just scammed. A person who have given seven long year to a show is forgotten so quickly and people have accepted that person who have nothing in store except imitations is hard to digest. She has to go long way, then only she can think of acceptation. But there is no harm to have day dreams and giving false statements.

This interview is a sham no doubt. I dount that TRPs are really going up. People may have been curious initially but after the disatrous entry of Gautami and the way Tulis' charcter has taken an about turn, I doubt that there is any truth in this article. No one can forget Smriti. In fact the comparisons are too inevitable. If they had brought Padmini Kolhapure perhaps it wouldn't have been so tough, but Gautami as a replacement for Smriti will simply not gel with people by and large. This serial is going to go to the trash bin without Smriti.
