After the phenomenal premiere of Killer MTV Splitsvilla 7, MTV is back again with yet another treat for all the viewers. With the monsoons spelling the official beginning for the season of love, MTV is all set to launch a brand new show which will focus on love in a supernatural setting- MTV Fanaah - An Impossible Love Story. The show will go on air from 21 July 2014, will be telecast from Monday to Friday at 6 PM.
The series concept took shape when MTV concluded the 11000 youth research across 40 cities earlier this year, whose findings were presented at the MTV Youth Marketing Forum. The research suggested that the youth are captivated by fantasy love tales and the supernatural. "Love stories have always found favor with the youngsters. While the study suggests that in their real life, commitment is rare and, that most of them are casually dating, experimenting, or are single-and-ready-to-mingle. But, the youth are in love with the idea of eternal romance" says, Sumeli Chatterjee, Head - Marketing and Insights, MTV India. Building on these findings, MTV decided to come up with a unique story of teen love featuring vampires and werewolves.
The show will see popular television artists such as Karan Kundra, Rithvik Dhanjani, Ratan Rajput, Anita Hassanandani and Chetna Pande delivering power-packed performances through the series. Building on the concept further, Vikas Gupta, Head - Programming at MTV said, "Love is a very strong emotion and with MTV Fanaah we really want to push the boundaries of what love can mean to different people and what one can achieve purely through the power of love. It's a great story and we're glad to have biggest and the hottest actors, who have a very strong connect with the youth in India - like Karan Kundra and Rithvik Dhanjani essaying lead roles in the show. It's a story about young people in love albeit in an extraordinary circumstances. Fantasy is the most successful as well as the most underrated genre and I'm sure the viewers will connect with our characters and enjoy the show immensely."
The show is going to be a breakaway from a run-of-the-mill fiction in the youth genre. Speaking further about the show, Sumeli Chatterjee, Head - Marketing and Insights at MTV India said, "We love to break the monotony of the genres. Routine is boring. And MTV is guided by a mission to Kill Boring to be the biggest, boldest, youth entertainment brand on the planet." MTV is known to create shows that bend the genre rules. MTV Fanaah challenges the routine genre rules in terms of its show plot, narration style and characters. MTV Fanaah is a story of multiple protagonists with entwined storylines. Sumeli further added, "Life is not exactly black and white, so, why should the characters be depicted that way in the series? Routine serials would portray characters as heroes and villains. You will see a very interesting difference in MTV Fanaah as all characters are gray. They are not exactly good or bad, they are good and bad. This would make it an interesting viewing and easier to relate to for the viewers."

Rithvik Dhanjani back with a bang!
MTV launching a supernatural drama on vampires. Titled 'Fanaa-An Impossible Love Story', the show will air on Monday through Friday, at 6 pm.
The channel has now decided to summon vampires and werewolves, with the launch of its first fiction supernatural drama 'Fanaa- An Impossible Love Story'. The show will be produced by BBC Worldwide Productions India and will go on air on July 21.
After a long time, the channel has planned to launch a show that will occupy a weekday slot. Fanaa will be aired on Monday through Friday, at the 6 pm slot (with three re-runs in a single day).
'Fanaa- An Impossible Love Story' is a story of power and impossible love. Some of the actors the show will feature include Karan Kundra, Rithvik Dhanjani, Chetna Pande, Anita Hassanandani, Ratan Rajput and Ahsaas Channa.
Of these, Kundra and Dhanjani will be seen in the lead roles; Kundra will play the vampire and Dhanjani will play the werewolf.
According to Sumeli Chatterjee, head, marketing, media and insights, MTV India, the only similarity between Fanaa and the other shows is the presence of a vampire, a werewolf and a human being. She insists the treatment of the show is a "never-seen-before" on Indian television.
"Fanaa has a very different style of narration. It is a story of five teenagers, based in the modern age. However, the story includes a time lapse; it goes back and forth in time. The narration - and characterisation - is something new in the youth genre on Indian television, and that makes it a very different concept," Chatterjee avers.
In life, people are not 'black' or 'white'; rather, personalities are always shaded with grey areas. The team drew inspiration from this fact. "No character is 'pure good' or 'pure bad'. And that is something that we have figured out is a routine formula that you see in fiction on Indian TV, across genres. MTV Fanaa breaks that myth," she says, adding, it is this concept that will make the show more relevant for the youth. We learn that even the situations, relationships and emotions in the show will not be easy to classify as either 'good' or 'bad'.
The whole concept took birth earlier this year, when the MTV conducted its 'Curious Minds' study. That's when the team realised that among the youth, there exists a tremendous appetite for fantasy and fantasy-based love stories. Thus, the channel decided to ideate on this show.
The show is targeted at "tweenagers" (10-12 years) and teenagers. MTV, Chatterjee says, enjoys similar popularity (reflected by viewership numbers) among both males and females. "It's the mystery and supernatural element of the concept that will draw male audiences. At the same time, the love part of it and the theme will attract female viewers," she says.
As of now, the channel plans to telecast the show for a period of six months. However, the show may be extended further, depending on its performance.

Excerpts:
On the other hand, Sunjoy Waddhwa, CMD, Sphereorigins Multivision, a production house that produced Indian fantasy fiction series such as Thief of Baghdad', Rajkumar Aryan' for NDTV Imagine and Shaurya Aur Suhani' for Star Plus, stressed that there is a large audience that watches fantasy fiction. He said, "It all depends on genre to genre. So, something happening on MTV, where the base audience is different, the nature of the show will be more like a niche show for teenagers. But when you come to bigger fantasy shows on a GEC, then across the board viewership is there. It all depends where you are positioning your show. But the audience is quite ready and hungry for such shows."
With MTV's new show Fanaah' looking to expand the audience base for Indian fantasy fiction shows, there is excitement in the genre. It remains to be seen whether the expectations are met and whether the show can successfully compete with shows in other genres, thus paving the way for more such series.

MTV's Fanaah - Indian Version Of Twilight, Vampire Diaries?
The show which is said to have five protagonists, Karan, Rithvik, Anita, Ratan, Chetna, obviuously revolves around the lives of vampires and humans. The show will have the love story between the vampire and the humans as the main story line and how the two involved find one another, fall in love with each other and find way to be together happily ever after forms the rest of the story.
The same kind of love stories has been tried in many Hollywood shows and have seen guarenteed success due to the appeal viewers have for the fantacy love stories and finding eternal love. Vikas Gupta, Head - Programming at MTV India, said, "Love is a very strong emotion and with MTV Fanaah we really want to push the boundaries of what love can mean to different people and what one can achieve purely through the power of love." Let's wait and watch how the show gets accpeted by the Indian youth, whom the show is targeting.

(maybe writer is confused, the poster, used next in the slideshow itself, clearly indicates Rithvik is playing a werewolf)

This is not an entirely new theme. In the past, Star One had aired a show called 'Pyaar Ki Yeh Ek Kahani' that starred Dhanjani (werewolf), Vivian Dsena (vampire) and Sukriti Khanpal (their common love interest). Fanaa will also have a love story angle along with other plots. The show is also being compared to a popular American series, 'The Vampire Diaries'.
