The curious case of Rangrasiya

Dear Mr. Tewari,

Let me come straight to the point. Filing a public interest litigation against a faulty system may set it right some day but perhaps what it will not do is this: fix a faulty storyline despite excellent writers, fix underutilized characters despite awesome actors, fix awry direction and fix unfortunately low production values, which have nosedived significantly and may be even make Ian Thorpe wear a thinking cap.

Sir, I am your TRP viewer. Yes I am.

I also realized I am fan of your magnum opus after I shocked myself into accepting that I am watching it at least three times a day.. twice on TV and third time online. I have three TV sets in my house and we all follow a simple unwritten rule yet universally accepted that all the three will be on when RR is telecast.

Sometime I think that maybe I have unwantedly contributed to BI ratings too just because I cannot afford, repeat, just cannot afford to miss even a nano second of RR right from its start. Plus, there are two more sets at my parents' place. These two also follow the same rule. So therefore a total of 5 sets between two families and yet we have failed to do the needful.

So there is something else wrong than mere TRPs it seems.

We understand, though there has never been an official confirmation, but RR was amongst the few shows which had a tight bound script of 200 episodes. Unless there is always a caveat that if your TRPmata does not bless you, the script be damned and let us hunt for new tracks that would please her, play those.. oh even these dint work.. so now let's get something else..

Sir, while this experimentation was on, the viewers too have started drifting away.

Had heard and read by the makers of your show that RR is like seeing a movie on small screen in form of a televised series. And the first three months were just awesome.

Well, kudos for the concept and the path breaking and "hatke" story of a young 21 year old girl infusing life and resurrecting a dead man and their awesome journey of life together with blood stained desert as its backdrop has taken a back seat or probably been shown the door.

Sir, you sold us the story of Parvati and her Rudra and trust me Parvati is what sells in India, because the harsh reality is that every TV show viewing woman secretly hopes to live the life of the protagonist.

Has it never sunk in that Paro is a viewer's delight, hope and aspiration.

A woman with a mind of steel and grit enough to grind the negativity across 100 kilometers of her existence to smooth paste. And her perspective is of utmost importance as well.

Like several married women of this country who yearn for their world as it was before getting hitched, why does Paro not wander into her imleeland ever?

Why does she never miss her loved ones other than Rudra? Why has she never reminisced about her time with Bindudi after her so-called father figure confessed of murdering her. And there are a plethora of whys when it comes to Paro.

Sir, in today's India where still a daughter is killed in her mother's womb, your Paro has survived quite a lot and there is a big story in itself in her survival and future as well. It is sad that Parvati has opted for colouring dupattas instead of say for resuming her education.

This .. this is what your TRP audience wants to see: Paro's emancipation and growth that equals her already arrived husband now that she has helped him erase all the negative things in his life. And there are several more ways to strengthen her character. But Alas!

Paro, true to her character, could have moved the conscience of the negative characters and slowly turn them into positive ones. Case in point: Kakisa and Sumer. Arre Sir, intey mein aap ke 50 episodes nikal jaate aur TRPmata ke darshan ho jaate.

And if you ask why? The only answer is that the one place where women love to see themselves is equal and also achieve it is in TV land.

And Rudra, ah my Rudra.

Sir, he is actually what every woman wants but does not have in real life. Please take this from me as I was once this super-snob-corporate-corner-office-senior-management-only homeland-watching professional ...now turned into a hapless phangurl whose marriage was almost in doldrums just because I forced my husband of several years to wear a mouche.

Rudra's character is so superbly written that it must have left imprints on the drawing board for sure.

Yes, yes he is in love and too crazily with his wife but he has other priorities too in his life. Well you may argue that if Paro can colour dupattas, Rudra can refuse to go the border and just sit and watch his wife play with colors.

But, what is extremely surprising is that our man seems to have sacrificed his first love: his motherland for his wife. Uh oh not done sir. Not done.

Sir majnu ke paas koi kaam nahin thaa laila ke saath ishq ladaane ke siwa.. Rudradev has thousands of kilometers of Indo-Pak border to take care of which he should, agar woh border pe hotey, to yeh so-called shantanu ghuspaith nahin kar saktaa.

Sir, the leads are not leads anymore. You understand what I mean right?

They are peripherals or like oregano seasoning to be sprinkled on any given track. It really pains to see the lead actors Mr. Sharma and Ms Irani: one a tornado and other a powerhouse of acting talent toil day in and day out to entertain us only to witness sharp southbound arrow in viewership.

I understand that you have a rocking team in the writing department including some awesome dialogue writing. A few days ago, I had an opportunity to interact with an individual from the screenplay team on twitter and am seriously impressed by the man. Pragmatic to the T, well some of my fellow members may disagree here. But still.

Sir, the writers ushered in a revolution in TV story telling with RR in the first three months so then why is the quality slipping when the authors are just the same. I did ask this writer if TV show stories are inspired by real life incidents all the time and he said it is not always. It is about relatability meeting aspiration and fiction is a balance of both.

Pronto! The best answer that anyone could give to describe effective story telling.

Sir, if TRP pressure has been the reason, then it sad because it seemed to have squeezed the thought process of excellent writers ...so much that viewers like me who have no knowledge of story writing and telling to see glaring glitches that will keep logic in the neighbourhood galaxy.

For example: the new track of a yet another villain is so -yawnsome"because aisa lagtaa hai ki rakht se likhi hui dastaan shayad sookh gayee hai so let's bring in some more bloodshed.

On the direction and camera, well I understand that stability is the key issue here when it comes to directors as Mr. Sharma was describing in his session with Actor Prepares students video. One Mahaepisode with other show explained how camera angles are being misused in our show and well the jhoolta hua scene when Rudra confessed his love, actually killed it! But well again I am no cinematographical expert yet I did feel something was wrong.

And the music, the melodious tracks, where are they? Instead we get glaring background shor which eats up the dialogues of our actors as well...

The penultimate view: the promotion and the lack of it, both, sucks. Period. As a media spin doctor I can tell you that the strategy to share bytes with saas bahu shows on hindi news channels aint doing any good.

Your target audience watches the daily 2-3 pm show on these news channels and does not see RR because they know what is going to happen. Needs a revised and effective PR strategy for sure.

Finally, Mr. Tewari , as viewer who can reach you only via a lowly online medium, and as someone who is hopelessly in love with the magic that RR has created on several of my TV sets, I would like to request you to give your viewers what he/she wants and not what you (As in team RR as a whole) think we want as all is not lost and there is always another opportunity waiting to be captured somewhere near. I assure you that my TV sets will continue to be loyal to RR till the end, which I am openly praying never comes.

I rest my case.

PS: I have tremendous respect for all the professionals who are working on this project and this by no way is a way to preach what should be done and what not. As a RR lover, I just could not agree with what Mr. Tewari told a fan therefore a non-partisan view of what an unbiased viewer thinks. Btw it is extremely disappointing to see that the forum mirrors the sad state of RR. Sad to witness a war between fans of the two fantabulous actors who are tirelessly working to entertain this same set of fans. Anyways, If you all do not like this post kindly let me know I will request the mods to close it.

A very well written and heartfelt message which I fully endorse.Where is the the passion and intensity that was promised to us?Nevertheless I will still remain loyal to the show just to support and appreciate the hard work of the entire cast and crew of RR.
As much as the TRP system sucks the makers and the channel need to focus on delivering something different and RR was surely a visual treat in the initial months.
Anyways wishing the makers all the very best and looking forward to more captivating storyline in the future.
Let's all enjoy the show as long as it lasts and May peace prevail in the forum.
