Karan Johar and Nikhil Advani
After directing hit films Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Karan stepped down to let his protege Nikhil Advani direct the next Dharma production, Kal Ho Naa Ho. The film went on to become a hit but the relationship between its producer and director took a hit and Nikhil walked out of Karan Johar's camp.

People thought his career would take a beating, but Nikhil managed to rope in big stars in a mega project called Salaam-E-Ishq. The film took two years to get made but it bombed at the box office.
