While Phalguni's emotional advice to the female lead is not going to make any difference, (one gets to see Ekta's favorite idealisms in her lead.. the girl who talks of ideal love without any practical thought, who says she loves books more than makeup but yet so worries about some distorted Kaajal and has to be assured it is alright..), it is notable to see the mother shown with so much anguish and strength at the same time.
Look at the lesson life has taught Phalguni. She was left bereft of everything, a child in hand and had to struggle to keep herself and the child alive. She then gets married to a big time businessman and like she says, he can have the luxury to love her with everything because the fact is that he has the luxury to do it.
Phalguni on the other hand is still taunted by her MIL. Her only solace is that her husband was enamoured by her and was even willing to make her child his own if she would marry him.
If one argues that Phalguni is just bitter and has forgotten love, then I would like to point out that Phalguni does love. She loves her daughter and hence protects her. One has to see the reality of life. Then concepts of love and happiness may sound right and idealistic but it is not that true.
Even Gauri for all the sad music to make her a victim is not as much as a victim as the serial portrays her to be. If she really did love the guy and was ready to run away, she should have had the guts to do it before her family, especially her mama went to the trouble of finding her a suitor, spending perhaps lakhs on her wedding and almost inviting the entire city for it.
The last minute effort to elope was just cowardice at its best. While Baa's character may reek of cruelty, if one considers her side of the story, one can see the reason for her anger. Her son goes out of his way to arrange the marriage for his niece. The girl then elopes the day before marriage leaving the entire family red faced.
While the show shows Baa to be ruthless and 'anti-love', I wonder how many would agree to what Gauri and Ishaani did if they were in Baa's place. And yeah, her way of showing her anger is pretty OTT. But making Gauri a victim to this level is unreal.
I guess from where I stand, Baa and Phalguni are two women who have been brought up by the realities of life. They have understood the life beneath all the sweet talk of love, sacrifice for love, victim hood and are stronger for it.
If they sound brutal, its because life is brutal that way. When one does not have any responsibilities, it is easy to lose oneself in the concept of being 'in-love'.. Unfortunately when responsibilities knock on the door, the sheen of the ideal prince charming and the princess fade away. We are afterall humans with faults.
Phalguni is fast becoming my favorite character. Yeah, she can probably be more grateful to the husband who seems to love her so much but then one cannot completely fault her. She is vulnerable in this world and to her credit, she knows and understands it.
While the leads live in dreams, Phalguni and Baa are more down to earth for me and I like them that way.
