Bollywood, in its hundred years, has given viewers many different genres. Be it revolutionary, romantic, or comic, Bollywood has always managed to bring in something new between the regular. Today we examine just such a genre based on homosexuals (gays and lesbians). Here's BollyCurry presenting a few movies which have managed to impress and showcase this sensitive topic in a good light.

In Fire marriage was portrayed to be a custom that is bound for women. It is a movie which focuses on the tale of two women Radha (Shabana Azmi) and Sita (Nandita Das). They are married due to different circumstances, however, their sexual needs remain unfulfilled as their husbands are too busy in their lives. They started off as in-laws, but eventually realize their love for each other. The movie was released in 1996 and then re-released in 1998. A movie by Deepa Mehta, Fire sensitively approaches the idea of two women falling in love with each other much to the chagrin of their family especially their husbands, but it proved that in the end love is above all.

This is yet another movie that focus on the relationship between two women Tanya (Eesha Kopikkar) and Sapna (Amrita Arora) who live together, but their live takes a complete U-turn when Rahul (Ashish Chowdhry) enters their life. Sapna falls for Rahul and separates from Tanya, but Tanya is unwilling to let Sapna go. Tanya's possessiveness towards Sapna is depicted in rest of the film. While this film is not something we would recommend for a true portrayal of lesbian relationships, it does highlight how sometimes a relationship can change and what effect it has on the previous relationship, especially when the relationship is something as sensitive as a lesbian relationship.

This film focuses on Nikhil Kapoor (Sanjay Suri) who is rejected by his father after he is discovered to be HIV positive. Nikhil is helped along in this difficult phase by his sister, Anamika (Juhi Chawla), along with his best friend and lover, Nigel (Purab Kohli). While this movie focused less on the love, it was nonetheless a prominent aspect of the movie. My Brother...Nikhil (2005) was much more about the life of a HIV person who undergoes trauma, psychological strangeness, and the hard form of the society in being ostracized.

Dunno Y Na Jaane Kyun (2010) depicts a relationship between a married man and a single man. This film highlights how a man with a lower social background defies another man. The story's major focus is on how both these men form a relationship of love and care. Though the society disapproves of this idea, they decide to live for each other. This film has won myriads of appreciation of the protagonist Yuvraaj Parashar, for his portrayal of a peculiar gay man. This movie took the industry by a storm for its controversial portrayal of the relationship between two men and particularly for a lovemaking scene between the two men yet it once again portrays how love knows no boundaries.

How can any list be complete without the ever hilarious 2008 blockbuster, Dostana? While this film may not have showcased a true relationship, it still had several aspects of the life of a gay man that we just cannot ignore. Two good looking men Sameer Kapoor (Abhishek Bachchan) and Kunal Chopra (John Abraham) have the urge to live in an exotic apartment, however the owner denies them since it's for her relative Neha (Priyanka Chopra) who can only live with girl housemates. This leads Kunal and Sameer to lie that they are gay. The movie goes on to showcase Boman Irani as a real gay along with a gay residence officer. The film won accolades for its comedy, but also for its portrayal of the life a gay man as being someone special so much so that there was a special line for them when they were filing a residency permit.

Other movies that portray at least a little bit on gay or lesbian relationships include Ragini MMS, Heroine, Fashion, Dedh Ishqiya, Honeymoon Travels Ltd., Kal Ho Naa Ho, I Am, and Bombay Talkies. As Bollywood is progressing, our Indian community is highly developing as well. It seems that sensitive topics like homosexuals are starting to become more prominent. All we hope for is that these topics are never treated with disregard and are given a proper portrayal among others.

omg I had no idea about this. Just watched on Youtube. Totally shocked.

Wish Abhishek and John had the guts to do that. Anyways Dostana should be the last film to be here. It is not based on "gays and lesbians", it just mocked them. 🤢

Honestly I am not a homophob. I went to school where people had difficulties to come out and some didn't go well and hence took wrong decisions such as suicide. I think it's free world to love anyone you want. Society we live in slowly is beginning to accept it. I mean my country just made gay marriages legal last year. Its about giving a fair chance to live their life with whoever they want. Homosexuality is still laughed at though. Some religions consider it sin. It was indeed a brave step from Karan Johar to showcase this in his film BUT. I didn't like the concept of showing a married couple having to face such scenario. Whether it's me being heterosexual and finding it uncomfortable seeing such situations go ugly or maybe they way how they show a gay guy breaks of a marriage. Either way. In Bollywood. Homosexuality based films won't be accepted (except Dostana which was rather a mockery) as majority of indian audiences are pretty conservative and will find such films offensive

Just because you don't understand it, doesn't make it "gross" or "sick". Please take your ignorant views somewhere else.
