Rana Sanga vs Rana Pratap

I am not comparing the legendary rulers. Only talking about stature given by public.

But I feel Rana Sanga is not as venerated as Rana Pratap!

Why is it so?

Rana Sanga united and expanded Rajputana. Even defeated nobles from Delhi Sultanate and shook Delhi Sultanate. He was great patron of arts and architecture also. He was known to have been a warrior to reckon with, despite all injuries, wounds. He lost one eye, one arm and got crippled in one leg. Still became a force to reckon with in North India at one point.

There are legends, folklore, stories about him. But I do not see frenzy to cover him in popular culture as much as there is for Rana Pratap.

There are tweets and blogs on Rana Pratap jayanti and anniversary of Haldighati battle every year but none for Rana Sanga jayanti.

There is statue of Rana Pratap in Parliament. I do not think there is any for Rana Sanga. Correct me if I am wrong.

Two TV shows and one movie/docu on Pratap. No idea of any show on Rana Sanga.

Stamps, coins and memorials for MP and even horse Chetak. Where are same for Rana Sanga?

Why is Rana Sanga less...venerated/celebrated/popular despite his accomplishments?

i agree Rana Sanga aka Maharana Sangram Singh and his wide rani Karnavati are both known for their legendary contributions to Mewar history they are the ones that laid down the foundation for Mewar to become what is was and Rana Pratap just took it to a whole new level Maharana Pratap was once quoted as saying if there was no Mahrana Uday Singh between me and Rana Sanga then Mughals would have been long gone!...

Rana Sanga also respected Meerabai and tried to protect her.

Why is he not venerated?

In serials, maybe they avoid him because he was not glamorous...today's gen may not want to see a guy with all battle scars and wounded limbs. Even MP is hard to "feed" to today's audience given the kind of life he had.

But why government has also ignored him?😲

Is it because of controversy over his connection with Babur?

History textbooks are unfair to all Indian rulers and give just 2 lines to each of them or call them mere rebels. 🤢 In school, I remember reading just two lines on Rana Sanga and Rana Pratap. Thank internet and Amar Chitra Katha for preserving Indian legends.

Anu I dont know much so firstly, thank you for sharing these snippets of history...

But why Maharana is more known and loved than his grandfather- i am just guessing here based on the little information i have gained over a year-

Could it be because he was a skilled warrior who not only fought valiantly in major wars but also survived scarless

Could it be because he was not only forced to renounce all his king-size comforts but also because even the extreme hardships of his spartan life never could compel him to sign a treaty with the unswerving enemy while all his siblings and fellow Rajput kings had fallen prey ...

Could it be because of the warfare tactics that he invented which later helped pave the way for Mughal downfall...

Or maybe MP was more famous because he did what he did in spite of having a father like US!!!!! 😉 (hehee - sorry, couldnt resist )

Scars were symbol of pride, courage and survival back then. I do not believe it reflected poorly on Rana Sanga as a warrior.

His rule was called the Golden Age of Mewar. He contributed greatly to art, architecture and administration. He captured Gujarat, united and lorded over Rajputana, controlled Central India and nearly got Delhi (till Babur issue). He was the most powerful ruler in North India at one point!

MP could never unite or lord over Rajputana or expand empire. His administration focused more on tactics to make territories impregnable for enemies. There is no significant role in architecture and art really. He was brave in battle of Haldighati but he had to escape only!

Rana Sanga also led a spartan life and abandoned Chittor after losing Battle of Khanwa (he also had to escape). But he fell sick and died or as some say, he was poisoned by his own nobles because he wanted to wage war against Babur again.

He is said to have united and out front large number of men and rulers in Battle of Khanwa giving tough fight to Babur. Babur had to get more army men and make it Jihad to motivate them to counter Rajputs. Use of guns tilted battle in their favour.

I agree maybe MP is admired for perfecting guerilla warfare and freeing most territories later except Chittor.

He did join hands with Afghans against Mughals in Battle of Haldighati.

But still not as much of an error as Rana Sanga made in initially entering into a treaty with Babur!

I am also surprised that Rajputs learnt nothing from previous defeats. Battle of Khanwa was lost because of technology overpowering manpower. Still they did not upgrade much in later years. There is treachery in cases of all Rajput kings' battles as well.

On topic, I think Rana Sanga had vision. Unlike MP who was only concerned with winning back Chittor.

Anu as I mentioned, my proposed theory was more of a conjecture.

I see your point when you say scars were symbols of pride, cause for Rajputs they were.

All the above information you shared about Rana Sanga does make one wonder - why not him first...

and truly, talent skips a generation. Cause without US in the middle, these two men would have done wonders for the country...

Yeah I think the biggest reason why the Pratap was consumed in the planning of winning Chittor back is because he did not have nay time during his rule to unite the Rajputana because it was during his own childhood that it had split. And up to a great extend it was due to his father that it had split. Pratap was worried about regaining his Chittor first before he could expand the Rajputana or even keep it united. And he did not last very long afterwards anyway, so the time frame was rather unlucky for the Maharana as well.
