And on the subject of rich texts, I will move to the other end of the spectrum- the dumb brigade. For the sake of politeness, I will not name all on this list, here, for I am not quite a Rhodes scholar or Nobel laureate! But I suppose guessing has its own fun.
Staying with books, I remember meeting a heroine, who had debuted opposite India's dancing superstar, delivered a monster hit with him, and moved on to another monster hit, with Sunny Deol. I had met her for an interview, where she saw a book slip out of my hands (how else does one tolerate those endless, long waits for interviews!). So she got talking on books, and how much she loves reading, and how reading is her passion and reading keeps her going.
I politely asked her who her favorite authors were. With a straight face, she replied "Danielle Steele and Chetan Bhagat!". No offence to the bestseller brigade, but even at the age of 23, I couldn't believe my ears. The said book lover and gold medallist for a US university had not quite graduated to the classics, nonfiction, biographies or anything that goes beyond pulp fiction. And yes, you can call me judgmental but I do rest the term book worm' a bit above airport purchases.
A recent interview with a drop dead gorgeous, petite young heroine, who features in an upcoming thriller, left me scrambling for copy at home. I had to fill 12 minutes and I could barely get anything out of her. I felt thoroughly inferior about my interviewing skills. But listening to her answers was like playing a game of word association. Crazy', Mad', Exciting', Wonderful', kept echoing back with each reply.
And a question on how do you see yourself emerge as an actress five years from now, how would you like to be remembered, elucidated a reply, For roles worth remembering'. I could barely believe my ears, till a sense of dj vu took over.
As a cub reporter, I always have wanted to interview Sri Devi, and have chased her with a boom mike on a couple of occasions. But when I witnessed her performance on the Kaun Banega Crorepati' episode, I realized just how air headed she was! That during her TV and print interviews for English Vinglish', she was accompanied by her director, Gauri Shinde, was the smartest ruse that her PR team used.
Getting anything out of Sri Devi is an uphill task, for she doesn't really have anything to say, on anything, her own films included.
This leading heroine, who has featured in plenty of hits and misses, and has again built a prolific body of work after an impressive debut opposite a Khan, is another challenge to interview.
At a recent waiting period, a senior scribe told me that each time she is hired for an interview for a cover story with this heroine, she is left scratching her head. A cover story requires meat, and some insights. In this case, the actress focuses on my hits, my co-stars (all around 15 years her senior,), my dad, my family'. Issues like political correctness, shouldering some responsibility as an icon, matters that made you think are brushed under the carpet. All issues are handled with the masses like it'.
Another misconception seems to be about Alia Bhatt. Her general knowledge leaves much to be desired. But when it comes to a film, acting, cinema and the arts, the girl is trained and thoroughly ready to take on the world.
And on a conclusive note, the leading women of Bollywood currently are far from being dumb. At best, some of them are a little self-obsessed, Katrina Kaif being one of those. A wayward remark from me once that her film Ajab Prem ki Gazab Kahani' might not necessarily do well, as films are a gamble, left her cold towards me for quite some time.
I was making an observation before its release but Katrina openly stated I don't like how you are thinking about it'. The statement gave me shivers, making me send out a prayer of thanks that mind control is still beyond the realm of the luminously beautiful and insanely successful. Having said that, I wouldn't rate her, Deepika and Priyanka as anything less than super smart.
So in Bollywood too, you encounter all sorts of brains- from the sharp, to the surprisingly sharp, to the hollow, to non-existent, acoustic vacant spaces. But then, fortune favors the brave'. All those who work for the big screen have taken quantum leaps of faith, and their success often proves that hard work can at times, replace intelligence.
