Khushi Gupta walked towards her sorority* house with a blunt attitude hanging off her small nose. While spring had officially begun, the Syracuse campus was still adorned with piles of snow.
The noise of her boot-heels dulled as she grew closer towards the house. She heaved a sigh looking at the disheveled state of the lawns in front of the houses. She walked in, throwing the small bag of tacos in her hand in the trash can placed in the corner of the room.
The loud music blared in the house, shaking not just the wooden patio outside but also the floors of the house. She pursed her lips and sat on the stairs watching everyone make out on any space they could find in the room.
"Hey!" a husky voice called from behind, invading her thoughts. She turned around to see a tall and well built boy standing behind her wearing khakis and polo. His hair looked disheveled enough to expose the deeds he had been immersed in before coming down, "rough party, huh?" he uttered sitting beside her.
"Yeah. I can't imagine what's going to happen at the end of the semester considering this one seems to be a huge hot shot for all the loners.", she replied throwing a light smile.
"Gosh, you make us all sound desperate!" he laughed.
"You know that I'm saying the truth." she replied.
"Well, partially." he responded, "I am Arnav by the way. Public Affairs major."
"Khushi Gupta. Junior and Pre-Law." she smiled back.
"You want to go hangout outside Khushi? All these people making-out are making me sick." he asked standing up.
She nodded and put her hand out for him to pull her up. He pulled her with a force that her face ended up colliding with his hard chest. They laughed, walking out talking and laughing together.
Shin Lee walked out of the class, towards the cafeteria. He swiped his card to enter and spotted Arnav sitting in the corner. He walked over towards him and sat across.
"You swiped. Aren't you going to get something to eat?" Arnav questioned looking up at his best friend.
"I'll get something to eat, but I need to tell you something." He replied with a sly smirk. Arnav stared unamused at him.
"I got you a spot with a +1 on the guest list for the Spring formal hosted by Korean Asian Pacific Society."
"And who am I suppose to go with?" Arnav replied. "I'm most definitely not going to be a third wheel with you and Lillian."
"Please tell me that you are going to ask Khushi out." Shin uttered dramatically. "Come on Arnav, the girl has clearly given all the hints that you are not friend zoned and that she likes you back. Go ask her out already!!"
Arnav stared at his friend, heaving a sigh, stood up and walked out of the cafeteria in search of his best girl. He walked across the lawn towards the library where she generally was at that time of the day.
He pushed open the glass doors and walked in towards the back corner tables by the social studies section. She was sitting with her war phones plugged in, her hair tied back in a rough bun while wearing shorts with a crop top.
He silently walked and pulled a chair beside her, distracting her from the book laying before her to himself. "Hey." She uttered.
"Hey, I wanted to ask you something." He replied questioningly.
"Go ahead."
"Well, Shin got me two tickets for the KASA formal and I was wondering if you'd like to be my date?" He uttered, half stuttering.
"Sure. When is the dance?"
"It's upcoming Friday. End of the weekend." He replied. "You can wear whatever you'd like. I'm going with a suit."
"Hmm.. Ok." She spoke thoughtfully.
He left the library after a while as they decided where to meet up to leave together and other things that seemed to be on the trending list these days.
The week passed with a rush, with more assignments being given and campus brightening up with colors. Khushi walked towards the middle lawn wearing a simple pale pink gown that swept behind her. She stood there for barely a minute until he came rushing towards her with a small box in his hand.
"Sorry for being late. I got you a nice bracelet actually. Shin was getting his girlfriend one so I thought why not I get something for you!?" He spoke smiling.
"It's okay Arnav. You didn't had too!" She laughed,"lets get going, shall we?"
"Yes!" He out his arms forward as they walked together towards the hall located at the end of the campus. The formal committee had turned the place into a brilliant fairytale. Fairy lights hung from the ceiling and dropping down low while soft music played.
The dance started off after the dinner and the long trailing speeches honoring the Korean ethnicity and the diversity they offered to United States. Arnav put his hand forward, cheekily asking her to dance to which she gladly obliged.
With the music softening, his hand slid from her shoulder to her waist while hers rested in his chest. He felt exhilarating breathing in her scent while butterflies clustered in her stomach. He slowly leaned in and placed his warm mouth of hers. Their lips interlocking and their heartbeats racing together.
That was it. Underneath the fairy lights and illuminated sky, they has without realizing found each other.
Khushi walked towards the Alpha Phi Alpha, the fraternity* house that was hosting the campus' largest end-of-semester party. The spring had settled well on campus, with flowers blooming and the bare branches of trees now covered with evergreen leaves.
Jessica, her best pal since high school had come down from Binghamton University, located upstate New York; to visit her. Khushi had asked Jessica to stay back a little longer while she could call Arnav up. As she walked out of her house, across to the end of the street where the havoc was taking place, a feeling of rush filled inside her. Her gut instincts told her that whatever it was going to be, was not something good.
Ignoring she walked in. Mark, one of the brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha, greeted her as she walked in. "Long time no see, Khushi! Didn't knew Arnav was going to steal you from us for good huh!" he shouted amidst the blaring music before walking away. She had grinned widely before walking away.
Entering, her soft hazel-green eyes looked around the place in search of him. She moved around, searching for him. She eventually spotted a similar shirt sticking out from underneath the closet space from the corner of the room, by the house-kitchen.
Intrigued, she pulled upon the door to find him lying stark naked on the floor and completely drunk with "THE" Sheetal Kapoor sitting on top of him. She stood still, astounded, and surprised until the reality gripped her.
"Khushi?" Sheetal uttered surprised looking up.
Disgusted, Khushi closed the door back on both of them and walked away, never to turn and look back again.

Chapter One:
Unconvincing Collisions
Khushi Gupta walked inside the glass building, right down from Grand Central station. Her black pump-heels clicked as she slid her card through the entrance and walked into the elevator, pressing for the 14th floor.
It was her official first day at the "Alyston & Rands LLP". She smiled to herself as she walked past the receptionist, giving her a good morning nod.
"The second conference room ma'am!" The receptionist spoke from behind, letting her stop from pushing the wrong door. She turned around to push the second door where a person, specifically male, appeared to be sitting.
"Hi! I'm Khushi..." She started off enthusiastically only to stop after recognizing the man's face. It was him.
"Khushi?" he stood up abruptly, his husky voice echoing in the empty room. Their trance was broken immediately as the door opened and a man of about sixty years old stepped in.
His face was wrinkled and hardened off his age whislt soft wisps of white hair laid atop of his head.
"I am hoping you both have gotten yourselves familiar with each other. Congratulations on your first day! I'm Edward Stevenson, a senior corporate defense attorney." The man spoke fluently taking a seat and pulling out folders from underneath his arm, spreading on the table before him.
"I suggest you both grab done paper and pen from the left cabinet drawer over there because I'm starting the briefing now. We don't waste any time here."
They both rushed together, their heads colliding as they pulled out the required stationaries. She looked at him with hatred filled in her eyes as they stood up, and walked back to their seats.
"Alright, so we are going to start with the contract itself. The case is breach of a clause and what we have to prove is that our clients provided the partnered company with ample time to resign and withdraw from the partnership but they refused too. We are going to go over the details of the misunderstanding but that's not what we want to highlight..."
Stevenson's voice echoed in Arnav's ear but his attention had shifted off towards the girl that in front of her.
All he remembered was going off to the party after the classes ended and waking up next day without his clothes on and his girlfriend gone. Khushi's roommate had refused to answer any questions and a week later he found out that she opted for study abroad for the last semester. Her number had changed and for the next three years, she was no where to be found, yet here she was.
"...so that's the basic overview. I'll have my secretary sent over you both the case files and copies of everything else to go over. My assistant will also be in touch with you shortly." Stevenson spoke before exiting the conference room without giving them a second look.
Arnav turned around towards her as the man exited, to see her collecting up all her things. There was a look of pure hatred was settled on her face.
"Why are you behaving as if you don't know me?" He questioned as she pulled up her bag.
"I'm sorry Mr. Raizada. Am I suppose to know you? We've only just met. I think it's going to take some time for us to get familiar." She replied sarcastically walking out.
His face scrunched as he looked at her from behind. What had just happened?
Arnav opened the doors of his loft and heaved a sigh of relief. Considering it was the first day, it had gone pretty well; except her.
When they told him that he was going to be working along with an intern, now rehired as a lawyer, he wasn't sure it was going to be her. But then he shouldn't have doubted what she was capable of.
He threw his coat over the recliner before walking into the bedroom and throwing himself over the bed.
"Khushi Gupta." He murmured. He turned around and for the first time in last four years, fell into a peaceful slumber.
"I fu*king met him. Out of all the people Alyston & Rands could hire, they chose his ugly head!" Khushi screamed entering her house.
Her roommate and best friend stepped out of her room and stared at her uncomprehendingly.
"That son of a ughhh!! Who does he even think he is? Acting all high and mighty while clearly having his head fixated in his own ass! I cannot deal with this!!" She screamed throwing her heels over the couch, "and Jess, I have to work with him over my first case! With HIM. The great Arnav Singh Raizada is going to be MY partner!! Wasn't he majoring in Public Affairs! Where did law pop out of all the politics?? Oh lord!!" She yelled, stomping off to her room and banging the door shut behind her.
Jessica stared at her infuturiated best friend. What exactly she had just witnessed? After a few minutes, she knocked at Khushi's bedroom door which flung open upon itself.
"Babe, you okay?"
"What do you think?"
"I think hun that you at overreacting. Didn't we agree that you've moved past him?"
"Yeah but Jess how would you feel if Jake turns up at your door step? I saw him. Everything just..."
She felt her hand being squeezed. Jessica sat beside her. "You just have to be strong hun. For yourself only. I know you could do it." She uttered sincerely before getting up, "now what do you want to do for dinner? We have an empty fridge."
"Let's order pizza and stream netflix." She replied throwing herself back.
"Oh! And get some ice creams buckets!" She yelled from behind as Jess exited her room.
Arnav felt his hand clash with a warm yet hard exterior if a woman as he swiped his card to enter the building. He looked up to see her staring him with anger seething through her.
"Watch your steps Mr. Raizada." She uttered curtly before moving past him.
Khushi walked into her small cabin waiting for Arnav to come. It was ten minutes past ten and he had still failed to show up. She was about to stand up and when the door opened with him entering.
"Sorry, I got caught up talking to Angelica!" He started to be cut off by him. He looked bit astonished and gulped sitting before her.
"I was thinking if we could go over the bylaws and attack their contract withdrawal from there, that'll be good."
"You're completely wrong, we slowly go towards the roots instead if attacking all at first. You need to play the games with their minds first. Never make it simple for the opponent to know your strategies."
"What are you trying to say Khushi? We. Definitely can't go against the laws over here and the only laws we are going to be complying with are going to be both the companies' bylaws." He responded back.
"Look we need to push the idea of them not complying with the contract. The opposing company had enough time to withdraw from partnership but they waited until after a month of signing the contract to realize that it's not equal profit. We just need to push that and we won't need to look behind that." Khushi spoke with concrete authority in her voice.
"Bylaws should be aloud second option. Not the first. We can't attack the foundations without having enough evidence."
"Khushi I'm still not.." He started off to be cut off by her.
"What is so hard in understanding that we you play eye for an eye. Not ear and eye for only one eye!"
"I'm just saying that.."
"No Arnav, you can't thrust all the power at first. This isn't just any person we are talking about. We are dealing with a lot if things here besides a person whom you are standing opposite with!"
"Why are you arguing over it as if I made it personal?!" He stood up.
She stood up facing him with pure hatred. "Before you are making your option a personal option." Her voice spat loathe and anger at him.
He quietened down for a moment and sighed. "You don't trust my judgements."
"Excuse me?" She responded offended by the route the conversation was taking.
"What did I do that makes you hate me? What did I do that you decided to disappear from right in front of me."
The hatred in her eyes became more and more prominent.
"Tell me Khushi what happened? You've left me completely baffled and I don't know where to turn to at all!"
"GET OUT OF MY OFFICE." She gritted furiously through her teeth. "I'll see you in the meeting Raizada. Now GET OUT." She gritted.
"Khushi.."
"GET OUT!"
He turned and walked out of the small room. His mind was boggled from whatever had taken place. Why was she reacting this way?
