Why is Arjun considered the HERO of Mahabharat?

Recently I was reading something and came across a quote by Christoper Reeve, which reads as follows " A hero is an ordinary individual who finds strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles."

Which made me think why is Arjun considered the HERO of Mahabharat! After some thinking I came up with this!

Arjun is believed to be a reincarnation of sage Nara, the eternal companion of Narayana (Lord Vishnu). In his many names, he is often addressed as Paarth, Keerti, Savyashachee, Dhanajay etc

Arjun as student was diligent, extremely focused and quick to grasp ... he resembled an embodiment of concentration! He gave up on sleep ... sweating hard during the nights to purse his goals of becoming an ambidextrous and precise archer. Arjun was a peerless archer who had no difficulty hitting a wooden rotating fish at Drapadi's swayamvar coming out triumphant!

His endurance and good will earned him his most precious and cherished gift of all his Gandiv, which he was very passionate and sensitive about. He was handed his Gandiv with a lot of affection from the Vedic God of rain. His divine golden chariot was also a gifted ... a chariot whose horses were said to be super power!

In other accomplishments, Arjun was blessed with Pasupatha from Lord Shiva and many more divine weapons in his lifelong journey. Versatility was another important trait of his ... he excelled in different art forms ... dancing and singing which greatly helped him during agyaat vaas. He fearlessly and courageously fought the Virat war single handedly crushing his opponents to emerge victorious.

On a personal side he fought temptations and dilemmas throughout his life ... yet always choose to remain faithful to his mother and his brothers during their trials and tribulations. He was known to be great human being, a kind person, a dutiful householder, a loyal brother, a great warrior, a devout husband and a sincere devotee of God.

However, Arjuna was highly arrogant and vain many at times during the course of his life. He was egotist and foolhardy at times, and there were times where he was too proud of his achievements and made vows in a split of a second. He sometimes proclaimed that things happened because he was making them happen. He wasn't as noble as others of his era, nor was he physically the strongest and perhaps neither the greatest warrior of them all. But despite his limitations ... we as humans have a certain connect with him ... because he somewhere represented us ... humans ... he was just one of us!

Arjun was far from perfect, so what made him so special after all?

His life gives us an important lessons for our lives ... his quest for perfection in every field ... his unflinching adherence to duty ... his respect towards elders ... and his devotion to his Guru.

But by far, the virtue of his inner purity and his loyalty to Lord Krishna, made Arjun all the more special ... he had the good fortune of receiving the divine knowledge of Bhagwat Gita ... and unknowingly that was Arjun's gift to mankind ... knowledge that will live on till the end of time.

Lord Krishna became his guide and mentor for life. To Arjun Lord Krishna's voice was the absolute. He embraced Lord Krishna's commands unfailingly ... at the expense of principles and promises that he held dear. Completely surrendering himself ... Arjun was fated to be the hero of the era and the instrument of God in restoring dharam.

Arjuna, represents all of us as we struggle with who we are, what we are meant for and our purpose. Lord Krishna represents the voice of insight, inspiration, divine guidance, our highest self or conscience. The divine cannot fight our battles for us but under his guidance and protection nothing is impossible!

Arjuna shows us that while we can admire a person's loyalty to their friend, loyalty to their family and dedication to their principles and promises ... all of these things must never be allowed to become an obstacle in doing what is truly for the benefit of the greater good. Lord Krishna, the divine guide, will always shower his grace on people who will put HIM first, and maybe that's why Arjuna is regarded as the hero of Mahabharat above any of his contemporaries.

This part can be applied to all of the male characters you come through in MB, to some a little more, to others a mighty less, everyone is boasting and singing their own praises -- annoying, huh, but to them they were just telling how it was -- to us it seems all far fetched.

impulsiveness, recklessness, foolhardiness, arrogance, egotism, sheer dumbness etc. -- yeah, all there.

Very nice post. Extremely thought provoking.

The real question is that what was there in Arjuna that made him fortunate enough to have Lord Krishna as a loyal friend, mentor and guide? Since you dont get it for free, you have to do the right karma to receive the right fruits. Or there were always Yudhishtira, Bhishma and Vidura.
That is the law of universe, found in almost every philosophical scripture -- You get what you give and what goes around always comes around, do bad -- more bad will come to you, you send good towards universe, it will send more good towards you.
Not to mention that Krishna asks for full unconditional devotion -- That happens when you can give up your male ego and willingly submit -- No one else, apart from Arjuna was able to do that regardless of his greatness as a warrior or a prince or an Army General.

I always wondered about this, thought on this and pondered a lot over why 'Arjun' is the hero, here during the same time, greater men with greater virtue existed.. This post of yours gave me an insight to why is Arjun the hero!
The last lines..

This clearly explains the reason..May be he is considered to be the representation of all human beings where one is thought to devout oneself completely to Lord. Surrendering yourself to God is the biggest challenge in a person's life. For you tend to fall into the tempations and relations in this material world but to overcome is truly a great achievement. This further explains to me on why Lord himself was his mentor and best friend. When you keep God above all then God himself will help you in your life and your relationship with others.

lovely Post ...I must say it is thought provoking ...Arjuna is definitely the hero of Mahabharatha and the most celebrated warrior of the era...He was impulsive , Harsh ,proud and arrogant ...I personally like his grey shades ...But at the same time his concentration ,razor sharp focus ,love and respect towards family and brothers are very commendable...We relate most to him because he is most human character of MB he has pride attitude and valor but at the same time the most courageous warrior who could win the world with Krishna on his side decided to surrender everything if the cost of being victorious was slaying his own kinsmen...Whatever he has acheived right from his childhood was with his might and sheer hardwork ...I would say from Gaandeev to having Krishna on his side he has proved his mettle to achieve everything .He is an austere warrior a very rare combination ...He has composed Durga stuti at the same time slayed ocean of soldiers and Maharathis alone .I would say a one man army...Then he has resisted that celestial nymph who can entice austere sages...Many say he had things easy I would say he had performed though penance to impress Indradeva also ...He had attained the diademn by proving his might...He has conquered Novatakavachas and Paulomas and fought the illusions .But the most glorious moments of his life were when his gaandeev slipped from his hand facing his kinsmen ..He is the reason for exsistance of Geeta hadn't he represented the mankind and clarified his doubts we would never have Geeta ...

Hey,I have never really commented on this forum about Arjun.. But your post is so well written that I could not help but appreciate..👏for me the reason why Arjun is considered hero in Mahabharat is in these lines..'Arjuna shows us that while we can admire a person's loyalty to their friend, loyalty to their family and dedication to their principles and promises ... all of these things must never be allowed to become an obstacle in doing what is truly for the benefit of the greater good.'

This is an extraordinary post. Thanks for such a lovely post. Indeed thought provoking. To me Arjun was the most human character of Mahabharat and a good human being. This quality is very rare. He is indeed a hero! And that is why, his Han qualities made him the bearer to the Geeta. See, all the words in the Geeta are actually our own. Krishna is in us. And Arjun, having a balance of all kinds of character traits, was the chosen one. He was emotional at times, angry at times, irritated and unmindful at times, dedicated and focused at times, and the best at times. A hero should always learn to express when needed, which Arjun did very brilliantly. Your post is very very well written. I am not saying being a fan of Shaheer or Arjun, but by reading it, you have successfully proved your point.
