Development = Westernization?

I was sitting in a group with 3 Indians and 3 white guys. One of them asked us if India was starting to see malls and multiplexes yet? And, the prompt reply was "Yes". One of the Indian fellow said proudly, "India is going to be really strong in the coming days, it is so westernized now."

I immediately asked, "Why always have Amerca as our parameter to judge development?"

So, the simple question is, "Should progress and development be based on how close we are to America or should there be some other basis for this?"

veyr good topic and very true. i dont think we need to be westernixed rather not fully just immulate the good things from west not bad or america. and as per america or any other country being the judge of anyones development is totally out of question.i think they should mind their own bussiness more and others less.

America is not forcing itself on us to be our judge. We, Indians, judge ourselves based on America. So, it's not about US of A minding its own business, but us rating ourselves based on how America has fared so far.

On a personal note, I hate when aunties say Oh all American things are available in Indian supermarkets now 😔. Is that something to be proud of?

I really find it hard to echo the nationalist/patriotic sentiment in this thread.
Yes India has shopping malls and 10 lane highways and KFC and all global brands. But thats just how any fastly developing economy in this century will look like.People spend more and it is nothing about Indians 'aping' americans or trying to be 'westernized'.
Lifestyles are slowly becoming similar to those in advanced economies like America.
We all live in capitalisitc times and we cannot avoid this change. But I am sure our generation has an astute understanding of what advantages our Indian upbringing gives us.

For the sake of discussion, if America is taken as a based for development by Indians then why does not every Indian have access to basic amenities like water, education, electricity, good roads, good administration and health care.

Why still all these above mentioned basic rights are detoriating day by day even in a big city like Mumbai. Many villages in India dont even have electricity and some ppl have to go miles just to get water for daily consumption.

In america, each child is given admission in the area where he/she lives, it is complusory I have heard but why there is a queue for schools admissions in India for taking admissions in kg class and those who give donations are given preference. 😔 Just erecting malls all over the country, will not take India towards development.

I dont want to protray India in a bad light or anything by stating all the above, I love my country very much but these are actual facts and it is very disheartening to see such things.

u just now gave an example abt an american. then in Dm only we read so many articles from american writers and other people als osome many surverys so i wont say that they dont weight our potential at all. and the fact that they do it shows that india is a threat and its progress is important to them.

and its not only india as US is a super power so all the countries through out the world compare their progress to US.

and for all those auties saying this i will say. ok but many things available in america r indian. and that too since many many years.
