Does 'Sur' exist in Today’s Music???

Sur is still there. These days the emphasis is on "a-sur"....😆

Actually, beats has beaten sur hands down. so why sur alone, lyrics and sur (here I mean melody) has gone into temporary hibernation while fast track beats reign... but there are still songs that have emphasis on sur, though they dont become chart toppers.

all i hav to say is "Bhghey Hoth tere" that song speaks for itself. it had sur, feelings and amazing singing and therefore it almost becam the natinal anthem of India 😆

however, i do agree singers lik Himesh, vishal-shekar, Atif, zubeen etc. mostly focus on type of music but they still sing with feeling and it shows in their songs and of course their voice quality is off the hook 😊 atleast Atif's voice is

In my opinion, our music has two strong aspect, melody called as 'sur' and rhythm called as 'taal'. The 'sur' is the 'breath' or 'praana' and the rhythm is the 'heartbeat' of our music. so both need to be together to create a really good song. Both are important for a song.

Does the Present type of music, which is totally "in Fashion" totally out of Sur??

When it comes to melody then a big YES. They are made on just the rhythm. Sur is lacking. Thats why the melody is missing... but they form the best dance beat numbers.

What is your definition of Sur according to today's music style?

Definition of sur cannot change with time.It will always remain the same.Now if the MD's use it or not is upon them. even today many MD's like Ismail, ARRehman, Jatin, lalit are giving out songs based on both sur and rhythm. But yes, on the other hand we also hav few others who are composing songs just on the basis of Rhythm.

What is your take?? Has "Sur" vanished or erased from the compositions which are made today.

It has not vanished but surely has gone down a lot.If today 20 songs gets released then maybe 5 has the melody rest all only rhythm.

As others have already stated in the topic, this seems to be the age of beats and rhythm and hence songs of Himesh or Preetam or Vishal Shekhar seem to be climbing up the popularity charts... Not that these songs are bad, in fact Preetam makes the very Rock style of Metro work very well... But the melody seems to be a rare thing in today's compositions....

Thank God that we do still have a Shantanu Moitra who comes up with an occassional Parineeta or an A R Rehman who blends rhythm and melody very prefect in his compositions... Not to mention Ismail Durbar, Shankar Ehsaan Loy, MM Kreem and so on... I think the split of Jatin Lalit has been the biggest blow to melody in the recent times... They seemed to have the maximum focus on melody as composers of the recent times...
