With TV show Khatron Ke Khiladi coming to a close, how would you sum up the experience? It was great. Though I've done television before, this was an action-based reality show and required a lot of hard work.
Moving on to your film, are you aware of the expectations from Singham Returns?Expectations keep increasing and I push myself harder each time. I can't take the love and success the audience has given me, for granted.
You and Ajay are a formidable combination, having delivered hits like the Golmaal series, All The Best, Bol Bachchan and Singham... It's fun working together. Singham is close to our hearts, so the sequel is special. I'll be presenting Ajay in a larger-than-life manner, he'll be coming on screen bare-bodied, it will be more powerful.
Did you write a character especially for Kareena Kapoor Khan? The character was created keeping Kareena in mind. She has not done this kind of a role before; it will not be the Kareena you've seen before.
Hard-hitting dialogues, Ajay's physique and action were the highlights of the first film. What's the sequel going to offer? I don't believe in pre-planning ki yeh film ki high points hain. I can't make a sequel keeping the first film's success in mind. Only people can ascertain the high points of a film. The challenge was how to lay the action, because every second promo has people flying, cars being blown up. So, I've incorporated some changes in the action.
What inspires you to come up with these kind of action sequences? It's in my DNA. After a point though, it becomes difficult. Since the first Singham, many films have that kind of action. So we have to work harder to create something new.
How do you manage to make action films in less than five months? I love working and it all depends on how you approach your work. You can view it positively or negatively, either as a cause of stress or as a challenge.
Do you see Singham turning into a franchise? Also, what about another Golmaal film? It's a brand yes, but it depends on the audience, whether they'll love what we are making. As for Golmaal, I've not been getting the right script. I don't want to cheat the audience by cashing in on its name.
What is the prime ingredient that makes your films connect with a wide audience? What do you attribute your success to? I can't pinpoint any particular aspect. When I write, I keep the family audience in mind. I ensure there's no vulgarity as families are coming into the theatres, and there's no blood and gore because of the kids. There is a set of people who doesn't like my cinema, but there's a bigger group that likes the kind of movies I make. Luck, Ajay, Shah Rukh, my team, lots of things coming together as a force. I'm lucky that every film is working and that I have this team.
What's next after Singham Returns? A film with Shah Rukh. It will be a full-on entertainer.
Apparently, you're venturing into production and are making a Marathi film with SRK. It's still being planned, nothing is finalised.
