Sonam Kapoor: I am really important

Actor Sonam Kapoor jokes that while her statements keep drawing flak, what her colleagues say about her doesn't even get picked up

Sonam Kapoor is easily India's most scrutinised fashion personality. And all eyes were on her when she took to the red carpet this week, at the Cannes Film Festival. For her first appearance, the actor picked a black Elie Saab dress that mostly won praise, but a few termed it as too safe, too.

"Everybody thinks I'm trying to be fashionable. I just wanted to wear a ball gown and feel like a princess. Honestly, I just want to have a good time," she says, when asked how she makes her fashion choices. We talk to her about her Cannes experience and more. The first year, I only came for a day. It was for the premiere of The Artist (2011). I got to see the film, and it was amazing. The second year, I attended the closing ceremony and didn't get to watch anything because I had to fulfil other obligations. Last year and this year, I've attended two days. This year, fortunately, they were two days in between, so I could watch a film. It's fun, and the energy is amazing. You have the best in the business here. Everyone's buzzing about movie deals. The most happening people in the industry, internationally, are here at this point, which is quite cool. The thing about that show is that it's designed for flak, and people don't understand that. It's not supposed to be taken seriously, but a lot of it still is.

It becomes national news even with an election going on. I was like, Oh my God, I'm really important'. (laughs) It doesn't happen even if I try. I think what I was saying got lost in translation. I don't think I got flak from the media; it was more from fans of various people. My fans do the same, so I understand what is happening. The thing is, a lot of people say things that don't get picked up. I've been spoken about on every show. But only when I say something, it gets picked up. I'm like, Okay, maybe what I say is important. Maybe I should use it constructively next time.'
