Dutch aghast as dying woman donates kidney on reality TV

Dutch broadcaster BNN plans to air a television show next week in which a terminally ill woman will decide who out of three young patients will get her kidney, Dutch media said yesterday.

Viewers will be able to advise the 37-year-old woman, known as Lisa, via SMSes which of the candidates to pick, the Algemeen Dagblad newspaper said. The show is scheduled for next Friday in a prime-time spot.

BNN, whose former director died from kidney failure and spent years on a waiting list for a kidney transplant, told Algemeen Dagblad that the show was meant to highlight the acute shortage of donors in The Netherlands.

The show is produced by Endemol, the Dutch entertainment power-house that invented the Big Brother television show in 1999.

Several transplant patient organisations and politicians have objected to The Big Donor Show.

"This is going in the direction of selling organs," a spokeswoman for the Dutch Transplant Foundation told Algemeen Dagblad.

A Christian Democrat member of parliament called on the Dutch ministers of healthcare and culture to stop the show. - Sapa-AFP

Each day a new reality TV show seems to be hitting the Tv screens...We currently have 3 music shows on the 3 competitor channels being aired on the same days and same time slots...

The competition is heating up...from extreme makeovers, to swetaing out to lose weight, to being holed up in the Big Brother house as the world watches each move of yours...

But deciding whom to doante a kidney to??? what is next...choosing a surrogate mother or a sperm donor by sms votes??

Is reality TV going too far...or do you think it is just mirroring the actual state of our society and we shouldnt be complaining??

Only some reality shows are real other reality shows are unrealistic! Unnecessary depiction of emotions is really unnecessary!

Why should reality shows be produced when we are living a real life??? The problems, the emotions, the competition we face in real world is enough, why should we watch them again in the name of entertainment!

Wishes,

Mythili

Yes! but who is giving the encouragement?

Innovative minds involved in reality TV, in surge of trps(money), exploiting emotional side of life = in coming years life won't be dependant on oxygen but smsgen 😃

Even God's must be in jitters, you never know when the television crew lands on 7th cloud to capture reality of operations up there "Creation of Mankind OR Allocation of life / death" from house of Bhrama 😆

TV shows are just something creatives put together and we have full freedom to choose to watch what we want. TV shows these days caters to different audience. We shouldn't complain. I love the gossips and dramas in reality shows which makes Bigg Boss a never to miss show for me😳. But I am also of the opinion that talent shows like Indian Idol shouldn't have too much drama but these days dramas raises TRPs thanks to audience who love negativity so we can't really blame the creative heads.

Nothing goes too far if we don't allow it.

Reality shows are indeed going too far with Kidney donation being voted for and such.
But as Maya said, it is because we are allowing it.
Luckily, we have choice to watch / not to watch.

So long as there is an audience for it, reality shows will thrive. Just goes to show you how we as a society (me included) are increasingly turning into a nosy bunch of people who love to point fingers and judge. But then again, hey, who wants to pass up the opportunity to watch a bunch of losers make ridiculous fools of themselves on national television? 😆 Pass on the popcorn! *Munch!* *Munch!*

Appreciate your candidness 😆. When I first came across BB in the UK, I was completely grossed out by the idea and the behaviour of the people on the show, yet I felt compelled to watch. Now, I can't be bothered. I'll watch a performing art reality show any day, though simply because there is some talent to redeem the show!😛
