People say that Abraham Lincoln is self made because he taught himself everything, including the law because he was so poor, his parents could not pay for his education. So those who are lucky to have parents who could pay for their education, are not self made ?

Just because you are a star kid, that doesn't mean you are not a self made.. Self made is getting your wealth from your own efforts, abilities, business decisions, etc. The term is actually used to differentiate people who made their money through hard work vs people who had daddy giving money to them or winning lottery.

There will always be other people playing role in ones success, but that people likely had to make many sacrifices, work long hours, take many risks, make unpopular decisions, and etc etc in order to succeed. Not everyone is willing or able to do all that.

That is why you see in a single family, the same parents can have two kids who went to the

same school, get the same education, but one may be a lazy bum and the other a hard working, energetic and innovative person who made him or herself a millionaire.

Two people with equal talent, looks can have exactly the same access to all resources and yet one might end up making himself comfortably wealthy while the other loses everything.
