Election Results 2014: Early Counting Puts Narendra Modi on Course for Resounding Win

Election Results 2014: Early Counting Puts Narendra Modi on Course for Resounding Win

New Delhi: Early counting of results in India's general election put the BJP and its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on course for a resounding victory.

Early returns showed Modi's Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies leading in 208 parliamentary seats. The ruling Congress party alliance was ahead in just 70, according to NDTV news.

Mr Modi was ahead in both of the constituencies he contested - in Vadodara in his home state of Gujarat and in the holy city of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh.

If early trends are confirmed the BJP and its allies would win an absolute majority of more than 272 seats in the Lok Sabha, bearing out the findings of exit polls.

Such an outcome would open the way for Mr Modi, 63, to become prime minister and act quickly to form the core of a new government.

Betting on a Modi win, foreign investors have poured more than $16 billion into Indian stocks and bonds in the past six months and now hold over 22 per cent of Mumbai-listed equities - a stake estimated by Morgan Stanley at almost $280 billion.

Since being named as his party's candidate last September, Mr Modi has flown 300,000 km and addressed 457 rallies in a slick, presidential-style campaign that has broken the mould of Indian politics.

In his tech-savvy campaign, Mr Modi outclassed Rahul Gandhi, the 43-year-old frontman of the Congress campaign.

Mr Modi's mantra of development has won over many voters skeptical about his Hindu-centric ideology and the communal riots in his home state in 2002 in which more than 1,000 people, mainly Muslims, died. He has denied any wrongdoing and a probe ordered by the Supreme Court has found he had no case to answer.

Mr Modi has promised that, if elected, he would take decisive action to unblock stalled investments in power, road and rail projects to revive economic growth that has fallen to a decade low of below 5 per cent.

Tax and labour market reforms, backed by a gradual opening up to foreign investment, would seek to create the 10 million jobs that Asia's third-largest economy must create every year to employ young people entering the workforce.

India Election Result:Narendra Modi Sweeps To Victory, Sensex Soars

The exit polls seem to have made the right call on India's federal elections in which a record 550 million people cast their votes to select the country's new prime minister: their choice is Narendra Modi, the fiery, business-friendly leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) whose party has romped home to a resounding victory. Modi tweeted, "India has won. Good days lie ahead"

Within two hours after the counting of votes began, it became apparent that the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance was returning to power. The BJP which needed to win 272 seats to get a clear majority in the country's 543-seat Parliament, looks set to cross the 300-seat mark with its allies. According toTimes Now television, the BJP has so far been leading in 278 seats, crossing predictions of a 250-seat haul. For the first time in 30 years, a single party looks set to win a clear majority on its own steam, ending an era of coalition politics.

Celebrations broke out at BJP's headquarters and offices throughout the country as it became apparent that the party was surging way ahead and likely to achieve a landslide win. The euphoria according to some reports, was felt all the way in New York's Times Square were Indian Modi supporters are believed to have distributed Indian sweets on the streets. The party extended to the stock market; bullish investors who anticipate that Modi will set the country's economic house in order, stoked the Sensex to cross the 25,000 mark, an all time high. The rupee too has gained to Rs 59.25 to a dollar, achieving a 10-month high.

The ruling Congress Party has suffered a devastating defeat, pulling in an abysmal tally of 52 seats, according to Times Now. Even as blame for the poor performance was being laid at the door of Congress scion Rahul Gandhi who at the time of writing is barely hanging on to his seat in Amethi in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, the traditional stronghold of the Gandhi family, party spokespeople were still defending him. The Congress-led United Progressive PGR -0.51% Alliance has overseen the country's economic slide in the past five years amid a plethora of corruption scandals.

The stock market surge has propelled BJP-friendly' stocks. Reliance Industries controlled by Mukesh Ambani, India's richest person, was up 6% in early morning trading. The stock has gained 20% since April in anticipation of a BJP win. Among the biggest gainers in percentage terms is billionaire Gautam Adani, a staunch Modi supporter, whose Adani Enterprises has jumped 60% since April; it was up 13% today alone in morning trading. While Adani is headquartered in Modi's home state of Gujarat, Ambani has huge investments in the state, including its giant refinery complex at Jamnagar.

I spoke to industrialist Harsh Goenka (who features among India's richest) who has tweeted that the Modi wave is a tsunamo'. "I'm delighted because a clear mandate to Modi will bring stability and give him the ability to take tough decisions, " said Goenka, echoing the general sentiment in the country's business circles.

Among the notable losers is activist Arvind Kejriwal, head of the Aam Aadmi Party (or common man's party) who lost to Modi in Varanasi, in eastern Uttar Pradesh, a key north Indian state where the saffron wave' saw the BJP notching up 70 out of 80 seats. Also unlucky was billionaire Nandan Nilekani who plunged into politics by contesting on a Congress ticket in his home constituency of Bangalore South but lost.

Meantime, Modi, who was reportedly ensconced in his home in Gandhinagar in Gujarat monitoring the election results, visited his mother to seek her blessings. He is expected to initiate a series of pro-business policies in the first 100 days of office, said analysts. For now, all eyes are on whom Modi selects to occupy key posts as he forms his cabinet after being sworn in on May 21

Election Results 2014: Narendra Modi Wins India. BJP and Allies to Cross 300 Seats.

AP

Narendra Modi greets supporters as he leaves the residence of his mother in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

New Delhi: Eight months after the BJP named him its prime ministerial candidate,Narendra Modi, 63, proved he was worth the opposition the party originally encountered over its decision. Mr Modi has delivered the BJP's best result ever, giving it more than the 272 seats it needs to form a government. This is the first parliamentary majority by a single party since 1984.

India has won, good days are coming, Mr Modi said at a rally in Vadodara in his home state of Gujarat, where thousands chanted his name. In a clear message to those who have tagged him a polarising leader, he said, "Even if we've clear majority to run the government, it's our responsibility to take everyone along in running India."

Through his campaign, Mr Modi had vowed to reboot the economy and deliver efficient governance -he said today "development for all" would be his mission.

With its allies, the BJP now has over 300 of the 543 parliamentary seats. The stunning numbers provide incontrovertible evidence of the "Modi wave" that the BJP name-dropped for months. The twin headline to Mr Modi's phenomenal win is the colossal defeat that he has enforced upon the incumbent Congress. Headed by Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, the party has crashed to its worst performance with less than 50 seats after 10 years in power.

This afternoon, after it became clear that he was the indisputable champion of the election, Mr Modi, who has been governing Gujarat for 13 years, drove to his mother's house to seek her blessings, promptly tweeting a selfie of their meeting.

He has been elected to parliament from Vadodara and the holy city of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, which he is expected to choose as his constituency.

With exit polls predicting a strong result for the BJP, Mr Modi has been in consultations with a series of party leaders over the last few days to decide who will belong in his government. Tomorrow, he will land in Delhi and drive to the BJP office for a meeting of its top decision-making body, its parliamentary board. The journey will be leveraged by celebrating party workers to stage a hero's welcome for Mr Modi.

Last year, a section of big-hitters within the BJP like Sushma Swaraj and LK ADvani resisted the BJP's plans to name Mr Modi its presumptive prime minister, partly because of his controversial past and his reputation as an authoritarian leader. They later endorsed his candidature. On Mr Modi's immediate to-do list is deciding the roles leaders like them will play in his government -an issue flagged for debate at tomorrow's Delhi meeting, said sources.

The Gandhis and other opponents of Mr Modi attacked him in rallies as a divisive leader, citing Gujarat's communal riots that took place on his watch in 2002. Detractors say Mr Modi did not do enough to stop the violence. He has denied any wrongdoing and the Supreme Court inquiry has found no evidence of his alleged role.

Mr Modi and his core team carefully constructed a presidential-style campaign powered by world-class technology. He has covered 300,000 km since being named the BJP's prime ministerial candidate in September, addressing 457 meetings. When he could not show up, he appeared as a hologram.

In virtually every appearance, Mr Modi reminded voters that he is the son of a lower-caste tea seller, contrasting his humble roots to the priveliged upbringing of Rahul Gandhi, who fronted the Congress campaign against him.

Choosing to steer largely clear of religion and the hardliner right-wing Hindtuva agenda he has pitched in the past, Mr Modi promised that if elected he would recharge an apathetic economy and nationalize the "Gujarat model" of development that his party listed as his main qualification for the country's top job.
