Chapter 15
The next day brought with it mixed emotions for Asad, Zoya and Dilshaad where Dilshaad was happy that her son had finally found love, was happy being in love and he had confessed. But she was scared too as she didn't know what Zoya would say. She was worried as Zoya had not said anything to Asad after his confession and she didn't want her son to go through a heart break like her.
Asad was happy as he felt a heavy weight lift off his heart. He was happy that he was able to tell Zoya his true feelings and could openly show the same to her. He did not have to mask his love as friendship only. Then there was the most beautiful moment of his life where he had kissed her. All this just made him extremely happy and he didn't want to think too much about what her reply would be and whether she would reciprocate the feelings or not. He was happy in this moment of love.
Zoya was in her own world too. She wanted so badly to tell Asad that she loved him too but she knew she had to wait till the end of the hearing. She didn't want to disturb him when he was so preoccupied with the case. She knew he was as eager to hear her confess her feelings but she had to wait, wait and make that moment the best for him. She knew that the kiss that they had shared was a precious moment for him but the confession would be the best and something he will never forget.
Both wanted to call the other just to say hi but didn't have the courage nor the time.
The day, it seemed, went by in a blink. Asad, Anwar and Mr. Reddy had been extremely busy going through details over and over again. Asad was on pins and needles as it was his team and his people working on Anwar's case. He didn't want anything to go wrong. Asad had had firsthand experience in going through the pain of not having the male member of the family with them. He didn't want Zoya or her Aapi to go through the same even though the circumstances were very different now as what the Khan's had been in years ago. Just those memories of not having his father with him made him feel helpless.
As expected the trial was an open and shut case. Mr. Reddy didn't have to do anything. The proofs which included documents that had been tampered with, the data on the company system and the cctv footage of Akram going into Anwar's cabin, when the later was not even there, and then spending unnecessary time in an empty cabin were proof enough that Akram had been upto something. Then came the biggest proof of all, Akram's confession about what all he did and why. The confession was made on camera while Akram was celebrating his victory, or so he thought. Akram had been out with his so called partner in crime Hayder, who was in the IT department and had helped Akram. Akram had convinced him against Anwar. But as the days and their friendship progressed Akram came out with little details about Zoya and how he had been asking Anwar to get her married to him, Hayder understood everything. He was no stranger to Akram's deeds where women were concerned. To top it all, the PI from Asad's team had been prompt enough to tell Hayder the other half of the story. Hayder had thought about the whole situation and then agreed to play along and get the confession out on camera from none other than Akram.
Hayder had agreed to help Akram only because the later had said he loved Anwar's sister in law but was not allowed to meet her. Only to help the lovers had Hayder agreed to get Anwar out of the way for a few days. So he had agreed to help but as the plan went haywire he realized there was more to it all than met the eyes and what Akram had told him. He tried to explain to Akram that whatever he was doing was not correct and was definitely not what they had discussed. But Akram had convinced him otherwise. Soon guilt started eating at his conscience and he decided to put a stop to all this. How he had tried to get out of all the mess but it was too late. Then came the day when Anwar was arrested. Hayder had been shocked at how far the whole thing had gone. He had immediately contacted Akram to discuss the issue but he was just not interested. Soon Hayder was contacted by the PI again and was asked to help or bear the consequences of falsely framing an innocent co worker.
Initially Hayder had felt cheated and was extremely guilty of what he had done but he met with the PI and had explained what had happened and then the plan of getting the confession was hatched and executed. Only the PI and Hayder knew something like this was being done. As per plan Hayder invited Akram to his house for boys only evening and the two had started chatting about how things turned out in Akram's favor. How initially Akram was working on it alone but was not able to access Anwar's computer at work. Hayder being from the IT department had finally agreed to help him get access into the system and then tamper with the details. After a lot of beating around the bush Akram finally said it out loud that he was the one who had done all the fraud and then framed Anwar for it, all only so he could get back at him for not giving into his wishes. How he had been trying to convince Anwar that he really wanted to marry his sister in law but the truth was he only wanted her once. Only because Anwar didn't agree for the so called alliance did Akram do all this and he did not regret doing any of it. Anwar was released with all charges against him dropped and the police were told to arrest Akram immediately. Hayder also was released as he had helped in solving the case. Asad, Anwar and Mr. Reddy were happy that their efforts had paid off but were shocked as the recording that was played was not the edited one but was the one where Akram had mentioned Zoya and his intentions towards her.
Zoya and Zeenat were shocked beyond belief that someone could stoop so low. Where Zeenat ran into her husband's arms, Zoya didn't move from her place. She felt someone hold her hand and immediately recognized the touch. She held onto his hand tightly and tears trickled down her cheeks. She looked at him with guilt in her eyes telling him it was all her fault. She looked at her Aapi and Jiju and cried silently. She told Asad to take her away from there. Asad looked at Anwar and saw him nod his head in approval. The way Zoya had avoided eye contact with any of them was proof that she held herself responsible for all that the family had been put through. As soon as they sat in Asad's car she started crying openly. In between her sobs she told Asad to just drive and take her far away from all this, far away from her Aapi and Jiju so she could not be the reason for any of their problems anymore.
Asad knew there was no point in arguing with her so, did as was told. He took her to the same caf and took the seat that was in the farthest corner. It didn't give them privacy but guaranteed fewer crowds around them and so they could talk without too many eyes on them. Holding onto his hand Zoya cried silently. Asad ordered her favorite coffee and sandwiches but she didn't want to eat. Everytime he tried feeding her she looked the other way. Her silent tears soon became uncontrolled sobs and she started hiccupping. In between her cries Asad could understand she was blaming herself for all that had happened with Anwar. He waited patiently for her to calm down but it didn't help. She just didn't stop and it was making him restless. All he wanted right now was to tell her how wrong she was and that none of this that happened was her fault. He wanted to take away all this pain and replace it with his love.
Asad heard her calling herself a horrible human, a cursed being and someone who couldn't bring happiness to anyone. That was the last straw for him and he pulled her into his arms. He didn't bother about who saw them in this intimate position and who said what, the only thing running in his mind was the fact that Zoya was emotionally very weak and that she needed him.
Holding her tight against his chest Asad comforted her by using every appreciative word in his dictionary. He used every word that would make her feel special and loved. Zoya too held onto him with all her might trying to burry herself in his chest, hide from all that had happened and what could have happened. When he felt her body relax against his he pulled back to see the tears dried up. Zoya was not crying but was not even smiling. She had a blank expression on her face.
"Are you feeling any better?"
She looked at him, eyes filled with sorrow and guilt. With fresh tears brimming in her eyes she voiced her feelings in barely above a whisper "How can I feel better? I have been the cause of all this Asad, my family has suffered because of me. The two most important people in my life have suffered because of me. I must have done some horrible things that even Allah cannot forgive me for and that's the reason all this is happening to me and my loved ones."
He placed a finger on her lips to stop her from saying anything further. She looked in his eyes and saw unshed tears. He shook his head indicating her to not say anything further. Zoya closed her eyes and let the tears roll down her cheeks. Asad moved closer to her and wiped the tears off her cheeks. He cupped her face and forced her to look at him. As soon as Zoya looked in his eyes she saw the determination that she had always seen in his eyes when she had visited him in his office. There was this confidence that he gave her just by looking in her eyes. Zoya let the last of her tears and sobs out of her body and then looked at him with just pure admiration for him, admiration because he had been with her in her weakest moments and had supported her, given her strength to fight back the cruelties that life had thrown at her.
Seeing the confidence build in her again, Asad closed his eyes and let out a sigh of relief. He felt Zoya's palm against his cheek and he immediately opened his eyes and saw her imitate his action from a while ago. She shook her head saying no and he looked confused. She smiled at his cute expression and then with the pad of her thumbs gently wiped the tears that had escaped his eyes. Only then did Asad realize that he had been crying with her. Both smiled and closed their eyes resting their foreheads together trying to draw strength and confidence from each other.
After a while they moved away and Asad looked at her with love. He pointed towards the food on the table and she nodded, agreeing to eat it now. Asad smiled at her and pulled the plates closer towards them. Both ate in almost silence not wanting to disturb the peace and quiet. As soon as they had finished eating, Zoya voiced a thought that had just crossed her mind. "Ya Allah! Akram is still out... He has not been arrested." She looked at Asad with fear in her eyes. He put an arm around her shoulders telling her to calm down. She looked so scared. Asad almost pulled her into him for a hug when she looked at him with fear filled eyes "Please take me home Asad. He was here last time too, you remember what he was doing... oh it must have all been planned...he must have followed me here... Asad please let's just leave quickly."
Asad paid the bill and they both stepped out the caf and walked towards their car. Zoya was scared and was holding onto his arm tightly, as if someone would come and pull her away. Asad held onto her hand too to comfort her. He had barely removed his keys from his pockets when they heard the sound of screeching tyres behind them. They turned around alarmed. As soon as Zoya saw Akram and his men get off the car she hid herself behind Asad holding onto him tightly. He felt her shaking and stepped forward covering her completely with his broad shoulders. Both men looked at eachother in the eye challenging the other to take one step forward. Akram smirked at them "I knew I would find the love birds here"
Both Asad and Zoya looked at him in shock and he continued "Don't look so surprised, as if you both don't know what I am talking about. Anyone can see through this mask of friendship that you two wear what actually is going on between the two of you." Asad heard Zoya gasp at the rude comments and held onto him tighter. She then saw Akram approaching her and in the sleaziest of tones he said "What does he have that I don't? I can be much better and more fun to be with." Asad heard a soft sob escape her lips and he stepped right infront of Akram leaving only a few inches between their faces. "Let us go Akram, already the police are looking for you and you will put yourself in more trouble if you do one more wrong thing."
They saw him smirk and then just nodded his head. Asad saw his men charging towards them. Instantly he pushed Zoya towards the car and bent down to escape the blow that was intended to hit him on his face. Zoya shrieked in horror gaining the attention of some people who were only a few meters away from them. She saw Akram's men attacking Asad from all sides but he managed to escape most of the blows. She shouted for help, to get some security people from the caf for help. Her shouts were heard loud and clear and she saw some security men come running towards the parking area. But Akram's men had weapons which they used to keep them at bay not allowing anyone to come close. She shouted for some to call the police but that had already been done by the manager of the caf who was standing among the crowd that had gathered. Akram had misjudged Asads strength and the fact that it still was broad daylight and the caf was one of the most popular hangout areas in Bhopal. Soon Asad was able to cause more damage than Akram's men thought he could. His regular workouts and the martial arts training helped him today.
Zoya saw Akram approaching her and she called out to Asad for help. He saw Akram leap towards her and grab her by her arm trying to drag her towards his car but Asad's reflexes were better. He held onto Zoya's outstretched hand immediately and he tried to pull her into his arms. Trying to cash in on the opportunity that Asad was distracted, one of Akram's men attacked Asad with a rod and hit him on his knee which caused him to lose his balance and he fell to the ground. Zoya called his name in shock in the loudest tone possible and saw Asad getup once again and pull her into his arms. He wrapped his arms around her securing her against his body. She still felt Akram trying to pull at her with a lot of force but Asad tightened his hold on her and she wrapped her arms around his waist with all her might. Asad felt her sobbing helplessly and he kept his hold tight on her. He knew he would not be able to last too long against all these men when they had weapons too. Both silently prayed to the almighty for help. They could hear police vehicles in the vicinity and were relieved at thought of help arriving. The police sirens sent Akram and his men into panic mode and in that frenzy one of his men attacked Asad with the rod and hit him on his head making a deep cut which had blood oozing out. The amount of blood that Asad was losing was enough to cover almost all his back only in a few seconds. Zoya heard him gasp in pain and then his hold loosened. She looked up at him and saw his face contorted with pain and then she saw him hold his head with one hand. She quickly raised her hand to his head running it through his hair and then she felt it. The warm liquid; She pulled her hand back and saw it was smeared red. She realized it was his blood. Her eyes widened in shock and she started calling out to him. Asad tried his best to keep his eyes open but the pain was too much for him to tolerate and he felt his arms loosen around Zoya. He stumbled to the ground taking Zoya with him. She tried to hold onto him but felt Akram pull her away from Asad. As soon as Asad lost the warmth of her body his eyes shot open and he saw Akram dragging her to the car. She was screaming his name and Asad's mind and body responded. He didn't know where all that energy came from but he literally flew to where Zoya was and pulled her out of Akram's hold and wrapped his arms around her again. Zoya was crying uncontrollably by now and she held onto him with all the strength she could. She was holding him so tight that Asad could feel her nails digging into his skin through his shirt.
They were both scared with what was happening to them. Soon the police sirens were loud enough for Akram and his men to realize that it would be impossible to get away if they didn't leave immediately. Akram scowled at them that he would come back and take her away for what he always intended. He quickly got into the car and tried to drive out but his car was blocked by the police and Asad saw police pulling all of them out of the car one at a time.
Zoya buried herself deeper into Asad's arms crying. Asad saw the police vehicles approaching into the parking area and sighed in relief. He was too tired and felt his body touching the ground. He felt all his energy drained and his eyes closing. Zoya felt his arms loosen around her and she looked at him in horror. She saw him closing his eyes and trying to lie down weakness taking over his senses. She panicked and started calling his name patting his cheeks lightly to get him to open his eyes.
"Asad... Asad... Open your eyes. Open your eyes please. Look the police are here too... They will help us." She hiccupped and then very aggressively she shook his shoulders to get any response from him but all she got was him wincing in pain. She smiled a little relieved that he was still with her. She kept calling out to him and he tried to open his eyes. She cried "Asad please Asad don't do this. Don't give up when we already have help here... Asad please open your eyes... please open your eyes and look at me... see I need you so much right now... See what he did to me she said showing him her arms that were badly bruised and her clothes that had ripped in different places... please please please ..."She begged him and felt him hold her hand just a little..."Officer... officer we need help here. We need to go to the hospital..." She screamed for someone to come and help her take Asad to the hospital and was relieved to see a few officers rushing towards her. She looked at him with a smile to tell him that they will go to the hospital and he will be fine, but she saw Asad lying lifeless in her lap with a big patch of his blood staining her kurta. Zoya looked at him in shock and lightly patted his cheek for any response, she got none. She shook him again calling his name louder this time but still there was no response.
A couple of officers had reached her by then and told her the paramedics were on their way and will be with them in only a few minutes. The next few minutes were hell for Zoya where she tried everything she could to get a response from him.
"Asad... Asad... bloody you have to wake up... you canot do this to me... You cannot leave me like this..." she cried harder. "I haven't even told you anything... Damn it I have been waiting for this trial to get over... Asad you hearing me naa... please I beg please open your eyes...please I need you... You know I am nothing without you...all these past months you have been by my side Asad and you have made me feel special all the time... please I can't go on without you... I won't go on without you... open your eyes Asad. I want to see the love you have for me in your eyes... why are you not listening to me Asad?" She shook him harder but still got no response from him. "See I've not even told you anything... I wanted it to be special Asad... but you are not even giving me one chance to say it to you...how can you do this to me... Please... for me... open your eyes Asad... Okay you wanted me as your life naa... I want the same Asad I LOVE YOU TOO DAMN IT OPEN YOUR EYES" she now screamed at him, shaking him and then she leaned in and kissed him on his lips. She cried holding him close to herself not bothered that her clothes were smeared with his blood or that there were police officers witnessing all this. She cried stroking his cheeks trying to get some movement from him trying to wake him up but all in vain. She heard the paramedics arrive and looked at him. She kissed him on his cheek and then she smashed her lips to his thinking he might just respond to her body heat. She closed her eyes and let her tears mingle with the sweat on his face. She rubbed her cheek against his mumbling the three words that he wanted to hear from her and what she was so impatient to say to him this evening.
The evening had turned out to be nothing like she had planned. She felt the paramedics gently pull him off her lap and she immediately held onto his hand tightly shaking her head from side to side telling them she will not let go, that he needs her and that she will go in the ambulance with him.
