TV is a medium that has an extensive reach in Indian households with viewers of varied ages and yet only handful of shows have coming of age concepts and most of the rest are hovering between love stories and kitchen politics. Is TV offering what audience want or audience are watching what is being offered is a haunting question that I am yet unable to answer with certainty.

A show like QH 1, which started with a fresh approach with emphasis on women empowerment by bringing on thought provoking tracks such as women idignification in the name of dowry, wedding taking priority over girl's ambitions, abusive in laws, regressive thoughts in reference to women's dressing sense and so forth, despite being on top of the TRP chart, took a huge U turn to glorify vamp for no good reason and making the antogonist a mere psycho wrecking havoc in female lead's life for all wrong reasons and reducing the once fierce character to a dumb and helpless damsel, who keeps sacrificing to death due to contrived situations. What influenced CVs to take this route? Is it audience, TRPs or lack of confidence in their own story and faltering to old tested formulas to be risk averse ? QH2 is in its early stages and too early to be judged but initial feelers strongly suggest that the leap is more tailored towards the tested formulae of women abuse in several forms.

Its not just Indian soaps but in general TV medium seems to be more insensitive to women's causes, even news channels are more interested in missing Malaysian airlines than missing 200 plus nigerian school girls abducted by militants.

Is this media personification of women as a self sacrificing mortal is born out of age old thinking of women as a weaker counterpart to bear the brunt of social injustice as her birth right or it is what is expected from audience from the media as the only acceptable form of social stories...just a thought to ponder.

What a wonderful post G4W!!!
I agree media should concentrate on the alive school girls than the for sure dead MH 370 crew and passengers. But I think it has more to do with the mystery surrounding the disappearance. Its makes for better viewing than the fact that a number of school girls in a small developing world in a region wrath with trouble have been kidnapped by so called jehadis and terrorists. Here in India, due to election time, the coverage is mostly about the election, but it took quite a few weeks for even the newspapers to pick up the kidnapping story.

About Indian telly and why it is the way it is, is very hard to comprehend. It has to do with the majority of the soap viewing audience and how the viewership has changed since the arrival of Ekta and her introduction of dailies. Before her advent, I remember my father also enjoying the shows that were shown. We used to all watch them. But then with the arrival of garishly dressed vamps and kitchen politics men stopped watching or at least moved away from the shows. Slowly, only the older section of the female audience, fondly named TRP aunties, became the target audience, thanks to the youth friendly channels and this launching shows. Who for some weird reason enjoyed the reflection of their lives on the soap. It may not be accurate but who would not like to pretend that they too are/were being tortured just as much by her in-laws and all other forces in her life.

My MIL only watches star shows. Can you guess which star shows she gives a miss and instead watches Sony? Mahabharat (not a hindu) and DABH (not kitchen-centric anymore). Even when she is watching ENP on Sony at 8:30, she smirks that the saas-bahu relationship as shown in that show is unreal and this never happens (in her small circle of acquaintances). Her favorite soaps so far are the ones with strong matriarch, Kokila anyone? She loves Kokila.

Mom only watches Colors, no idea why. Must have to do with being a mother of daughters and Colors seem to have the most number of tortured DILs. just kidding.

Also, if you look at the history of TV shows, shows which tried to portray something new and different never worked. Sony started launching a lot of shows, moving away from saas-bahu genre a while ago but has come back to that genre for prime time. Coz that is the only thing that seems to sell.

Okay above is just my opinion and thoughts and not all of it anyways.

QH1 was doing extremely well TRP wise when CVs took ZOYAAN route that brought down the popularity, which makes me think that there is more a perception issue than TRPs that direct CVs actions.

A thought out post indeed!
This is why I love reading yours. They're analysed and logical.

Anyway, coming to the issue, I completely agree.

Remember the wonderful Daily Soaps we had not a long time back? I'm talking about some epic shows like Sarabhai v/s Sarabhai, Khichdi and many more.

I remember enjoying them with family. There actually used to be a 'Family Time'.
Shows these days revolve around Marriage. Every single one.
Then there's a vamp. Some good people, some bad, some grey and the list goes on.

For instance, I do love QH but I have to admit that sometimes, things become awkward. Like, there are the 'fall scenes' and the 'sensual dancing' scenes. I'm not saying they're bad and the viewers don't enjoy it, its just that they can't be watched with family.

I'm completely fine watching them with my Mom. But with Dad, things are..er.. embarrassing. He doesn't object, in fact he liked QH too.. but I feel weird in watching such scenes with him being in the vicinity. So I end up shuffling channels.

That's not only with QH but most of the daily soaps. Either a marriage is broken, or it has consequences. But why is it so important? Can't they focus on shows which deal with social issues?

They might. But again, the audience. We want romance. Even if such shows do begin, they don't survive the race and hence are shut down.

Once upon a time there was a show on Zee TV called 'Afsar Bitiya'. My Mom watched it and it was worth it too. It was the story of a poor girl who struggled to reach the position of an IAS Officer. And then there were many, very realistic, obstacles that she had to face.

Sadly, the show had a Zee TV Show fate. There came bloopers and unnecessary evilness. The villains dominated.. and you know what happens next.

I'm not against romantic shows, I just want shows which can be enjoyed with Family. I don't think my dad watches TV anymore. Its mostly either news (which is dominated by politics; even the newspapers!) or movies.

And I watch QH either alone or with Mom because I am not comfortable.

Thank you for this post!

Nice Post G4W.
The age old egg-chicken debate has no answer.
When makers try to offer something different and it doesn't work, then it becomes a case of once bitten twice shy. Then neither the channel nor the maker want to experiment.

In other industries, competition leads to better quality products at cheap prices. But in case of TV, the reverse has happened. Before competition (onset of so many channels), there were some awesome serials catering to a wide variety of audience. But with more number of channels coming up, the more crap they keep showing. 24 was a nice concept, but how much did it fare in the TRP chart. It got a lot of rare reviews. But that's about it.
Like Rivs said, Sony started being different, but when it didn't get the reqd. TRPs and hence advertisers, it too switched back to the time tested plots.

And can't blame the entertainment channels or makers, when news channels don't want to air news, but sensational news.

As for media personification of women as a self sacrificing mortal, well, that's sad, and can't even say its the reality. maybe in rural parts, women may be sacrificing, but in towns and cities, its not the case. Young girls today, are educated, want a good job and marriage is last on their list of needs. Gone are the days when women needed to be married to be happy.

When these young girls get older and become the TRP audience, they may reject such outdated concepts, and then we can expect some change. But till the kitchen politics is earning the TRPs. things won't change.

Plus, the TRP system is flawed. Only 10,000 odd meters to decide the ratings of nearly 212 million households. So, the TRPs may not actually give a true picture.

Ok, now let me stop my essay.
That was a long reply.
This time I'm not to be blamed. The issues you raised were such.
