Chapter 31
The commissioner didn't seem quite happy with the new progress in the case. He was silently listening to the details which rathore kept in front. Dixit's confession seems to have brought loads of folded information in the front and it was evident commissioner had something else to speak on the case.
Commissioner didn't speak much though coz he wasn't incharge of the case at that time. But he could give the contact information of Ranbir Singh, the investigative officer of the Anna's case years back and now the ex-chief of the Interpol special branch in Mumbai.
He had met with an accident 2 years back and lost one of his limbs. He had met with a cardiac attack few months back and is paralyzed at one side of his body. He stays with his daughter and son-in-law in mumbai. Rathore noted down the address.
Commissioner further stated that the current home minister was also the same few years back when the case happened. He would speak to him about the case and try to extract as much information as possible. Rathore wanted some special authorities to check up with the political issues, even politicians backgrounds if needed, when it came but commissioner couldn't assure much. He had to get the higher commands for such powers.
Rathore stood up after a brief discussion more on the case and the sensitivity of the issue. Commissioner though assured every possible help from his and the department's end, nothing was much done to search for sushma, coz that would alert her more and the situation would just get more difficult. But the security was increased at places all over mumbai and the control rooms were on high alert. If sushma would enter mumbai or any way into country she would be caught instantly.
Rathore reached the parking in a foul mood. Though they were getting inside the case as much as they could but still the most important thing still remains unknown. The place and date of the attack. Sakshi too had called up last night, without much information. Small gatherings and functions won't be much help for those who were seeking revenge from the department.
He called up Arjun and informed about the same. Arjun wasn't quite offended, he had expected something like this. But Ranbir Singh was the only bait right now. They planned to meet at the Ranbir Singh's residence.
Sameer headed at the address he had noted down. It was a bit far from the main city and took him some time. Sameer reached the house and parked the car at the side of the road where stood some lone buildings in a row. It wasn't a rich man's house, but it was neat and quite well maintained. He looked around, it seemed to be a complete residential area, with a children's park attached right at the end of the lane.
He walked to the door and pressed the bell. He waited for some time and was about to press the bell again when he heard the door creak open. A young lady dressed in simple salwar suit, stood at the door.
Rathore showed her the Id card and mentioned the purpose of his visit. Unlike others she wasn't afraid much. She called him inside politely and was about to close the door when Arjun came in. Rathore introduced him too and both took their seats on the sofa in the living room.
The girl excused herself and went inside to attend to her 'baba' ex-chief Ranbir Singh. The two acps looked around the house. There were a few expensive antique collections, though they were piled up inside a glass cupboard. An expensive painting still hanging on the wall, but dusty and not kept well. Others seemed ordinary goods from a common household. Steel crockery sets for regular use, a few glasses but not expensive ones.
They looked around at the medals that were now kept inside the cupboard beside the showpieces. Arjun was looking into one of the medals when the girl came in pushing the wheel chair where seated her father.
The man wasn't too old, but the illness had taken a toll on his health and he seemed much older than his age. He sat on the wheel chair leaning towards the right side. It was evident the left side was paralysed. The girl introduced the guests at her house to him, but all he could do was give a tiny nod and blink his eyes.
The girl sat on the floor beside her father while the ACPs took their seat on the sofa in front of him. Rathore looked at him and started,
'hum apse Anna ke case ke bare mein puchne aye the, jo 7 years back was under you,'
Ranbir seemed alerted and again blinked his eyes, mumbling something to himself. Arjun looked at Rathore and sat upright,
'apko pata tha ki anna ke sath ek remote bomb aur ek tracker lagaya gaya tha?'
Ranbir nodded slightly again.
'aisa kya hua tha ki higher officials ne ye kadam uthaya? They could have arrested him again?' Arjun asked again,
It took sometime for Ranbir to absorb the questions asked but after a few moments suddenly he started shaking vigorous, he had a panic stricken face. His daughter started rubbing his chest to calm him down but he started pointing towards his room, mumbling something to her again.
His daughter calmed him down and looked at her guests. Arjun gave an assuring nod and she left for the room. She brought with herself a blue colored old file. She showed it to Ranbir and he nodded to Arjun, mumbling,
'ori..gi..nle..ca..see..fale...'
'original case file,' he daughter repeated, and gave the file to arjun.
Arjun looked into the papers and looked back at rathore who had leaned towards him to see the papers. The file didn't have any mention of any encounter. It said the remote bomb that was planted with Anna had blasted due to some mishandling of the remote device.
Ranbir's daughter had brought a glass of water and was feeding her father, slipping most of the water on the floor.
'lekin ye case file apke pass kaise? Ye to department ke pass hona chahiye,' Rathore asked him,
Before Ranbir could speak, his Arjun spoke up,
'ye case Interpol ke pass transfer ho gaya tha, aur interpol ne isse encounter bana diya, aur iss case ko dabane ke liye SI Ranbir Singh ko ACP promote kar diya gaya aur yaha mumbai mein transfer kar diya gaya,' arjun completed looking at Ranbir, who seemed to agree with another blink of his eyes,
'matlab wo blast..aur wo bus..' rathore started but he felt a pressure on his thigh and found arjun's palm on it. He looked at Arjun who was looking at Ranbir keenly.
'kha..na...' ranbir mouthed the word which surprised all of them including his daughter,
'papa abhi? Abhi to khaya apne? Shayad papa bhool gaye, hota hai kabhi kabhi,' the lady explained,
Rathore looked at Arjun, who was again lost in some of his weird thoughts.
'ap sushma ko jante the? Anna ki beti?' he asked ranbir, which the man seemed to ignore,
Rathore tried to get up but Arjun started probing again,
'sushma anna ke maut ka badla le rahi hai, uska badla kisse hai?' he asked him,
Ranbir again mouthed Kha...na' and looked at his daughter.
Rathore stood up and nudged rawte too.. Ranbir's daughter seemed quite skeptical but kept quite. They walked out quietly giving another pitiful look at the once-corrupt officer of the department.
Both sat inside the SUV, Arjun was at the driving seat. That's when Rathore asked him,
'Rawte tumhe pata tha uss bomb blast ke bare mein?'
'Rathore, tumne dixit ki batein dhyan se nehi suni, I heard the interrogation. Usne kaha tha, anna ke sath ek bomb aur ek tracker lagaya gaya tha. Agar site pe blast karna tha, to why would they track him. Blast yato kahi aur plan kiya gaya tha, jaha kisiko pata na chale, ya fir koi aur maksat tha,'
'maksat? Kaisa maksat?'
'socho rathore, agar blast sirf remote mishandling ki wajah se hua tha...to usse encounter dikhane ki zaroorat kya thi? Aur ek corrupt SI ka promotion, directly to ACP, without any past record, kabhi suna hai tumne? Kuch to choot raha hai rathore,' arjun replied,
'haan sahi kaha, aur wo bus mein jo blast hua? Wo bhi shayad isi liye kiya gaya tha, ki koi witness na rahe. Dammit agar ranbir aj thora aur baat kar pata,'
'baat karega rathore, agar wo khud nehi to uske bank aur call records,' arjun replied with a meaningful nod.
'lekin mujhe uski ek aur baat pareshan kar rahi hai,' arjun continued,
'kaun si baat?' rathore asked,
'khana, aise achanak?' he said thoughtful,
'rawte, wo bimar hai, bimar insaan aisa bohot kuch keheta hai, uski beti bhi to boli thina..' he replied irritated,
Arjun kept shut but his mind didn't stop scribbling on that.
***************
They reached the ETF office to find everyone busy working in their stations. Shree was again working with the chip with a cup full of coffee lying isolated on his desk.
Aisha was at her computer checking on some records. Sakshi was speaking on the call and Chotu was out somewhere.
All gathered in the conference room and shared the days findings with some angry hard glares from rathore and an irritated look from arjun, who later sat facing his back with the pen spinning between his fingers.
Shree and his team was still not able to decode the file so Aisha took the responsibility to check with Ranbir's background. Sakshi had to meet her former boss, and wanted a leave next day, which frustrated Rathore to a huge extend, but he granted.
Finally everything said and done, the day wrapped up after midnight. Aisha was continuously getting a call from the evening which she was ignoring for a long time. Finally when the day ended she quickly walked out of the conference room, into the lobby and received the call. She was speaking on the call for some time when Rathore walked to her.
Shree and sakshi had left, Arjun would stay back again and Rathore was leaving after the day when he heard her speaking in the lobby. She was definitely giving a tough SYS to someone. Rathore asked her if she needed a drop and she agreed.
Rathore was waiting for about 10 minutes inside the car when finally aisha appeared, sprinting out of the building, still trying to convince someone on the phone. Finally a furious Aisha hung up the call and sat inside the car. Rathore started the engine.
The journey was a silent one. Aisha was looking outside lost in her own thoughts, while Sameer was continuously keeping a watch on her mood which wasn't too good from the morning, though her foul mood never affected her duty. Sameer never probed into someone's personal matter and kept to his driving skills silently.
They reached Aisha's place pretty quick owing to the late night empty roads. Aisha got down after bidding a soft goodnight'. Sameer replied back but she was so lost in herself, she missed it.
Sameer waited for her to get inside but she had stopped in her tracks hesitating to step ahead. That's when Sameer walked out and called to her. She looked back surprised. He felt it a bit strange and couldn't stop himself from probing her.
He had just taken a step towards her when a loud shout, 'mumma', from the back end and a speeding kid's scooter bicycle rolled to them and halted in between sameer's legs.
The child wasn't quite affected with the mini accident she made and moved forward bumping her bike into Aisha.
Sameer had just turned towards the source of the voice when something hit him hard at his legs. He looked down shocked and found a small girl in a red and blue night dress, standing on her scooter bicycle.
She again banged into aisha and almost fell down but Sameer held her. Now he saw the face and that's when another shout was heard, which might have shook the sleeping monsters too...
'Dooosst...' a cheerful loud voice called him.
