Chapter 17
February 6, 2014. 12:00 pm. Garg House.
Kabir is very worried for Rachna since she called in sick. He has decided to come visit her to make sure she is ok.
Kabir reaches the Garg house and rings the doorbell. Shail opens the door and is pleasantly surprised to see Kabir.
"Nanhe beta! What a surprise, come in."
"Thank you aunty. Voh, Rachna didn't come to the office today so I thought I would come here."
"It's ok beta. You don't need an excuse to come here...it's like your own house. Ok you go to Rachna's room, I'll bring some tea and snacks for you."
Kabir walks up the stairs to Rachna's room and knocks on her door. Rachna opens the door and is shocked to see Kabir standing there.
"Kabir?!? You're here?"
Kabir is stunned to see Rachna. Her eyes are all puffy and red. Her cheeks have streaks of tears. Her face looks tired and dull. Her hair is a mess. He steps into the room and is equally surprised to find that her usually neat and tidy room is a mess too. The bed is not made, there are papers strewn all across her desk and the floor.
"Rachna...what have you done? Look at yourself. What's wrong?"
Rachna tries to wipe her face and reassure Kabir that she's ok.
"I'm fine Kabir. Really...I'm ok. Anyways why are you here? Did you have some work?"
Kabir is not convinced by Rachna's words but he can sense that she doesn't want to talk about it so he doesn't push her.
"Yeah, I came to ask you about these designs that I drew last night. Do they fit with the ones that you came up? I want to make sure that we have similar themes going on."
Rachna looks down, clearly ashamed of herself.
In a tiny voice she explains to Kabir that she doesn't have the designs ready.
"I'm sorry Kabir. I don't have anything prepared. I couldn't..."
Kabir interrupts Rachna. "It's ok Rachna. You were not feeling well so it's fine. I'll have someone else do the rest of the designs...don't worry about it. I shouldn't have bothered you anyway. I'll just leave now. You please rest and feel better soon ok? Call me if you need anything."
Rachna nods meekly as she closes the door behind Kabir.

Kabir is really confused to see Rachna like this. He says good bye to Shail and leaves the Garg house.
On his way back to the office, Kabir wonders what could be wrong with Rachna.
[Kabir's thoughts]
What's wrong with her? I saw the same sadness and emptiness in her eyes today that I had seen on the day of the interview. Why? What is it that's causing her so much pain? I'm damn sure it's something big. I have to find out...but who can I ask? Gunjan? No, she will wonder why I care about Rachna so much. Mayank? No, he's so overprotective of Rachna that he would never tell me anything. Raj? Hmm, yeah, Raj...he'll probably tell me if he knows about it.

February 6, 2014. 5:00 pm. Rachna's Room.
Shail comes into Rachna's room and finds her sitting in a chair by the window.
"Rachna beta. How are you feeling now? Do you want to eat something?"
Rachna does not respond. Shail walks over to where Rachna is sitting and puts her hand on her daughter's shoulder. Rachna jumps and looks up at her mother.
"Mummy? You scared me."
Shail is shocked to see her daughter's condition. She bends down and caresses Rachna's face lovingly.
"Rachna beta. What's wrong my princess? What's the matter, at least tell your mummy..."
Shail pulls Rachna out of the chair and guides her to sit on the bed. Rachna lies down with her head on Shail's lap. Shail strokes Rachna's hair sweetly and prods her daughter to share what's wrong.
"Rachna. Come on, tell me what's wrong. This is not just work-related tension. It's something bigger. So start talking..."

February 6, 2014. 5:00 pm. Coffee Shop.
"Hey Raj! Thanks for agreeing to meet me on such short notice man!"
Kabir greets Raj with a handshake. Raj smiles and takes a seat.
"It's ok Kabir. What's up? All ok? Siddharth is pretty pissed off at you."
Kabir frowns. "Hmmm, yeah it's understandable but whatever, I can't do anything about him now. How do you stand it dude? He's such a..."
Raj smiles. "Yeah yeah, I know. He's a conceited jerk. But what can I do? The job pays well and working with him can really take your career to the next level. So, no other choice but to work with him."
Raj and Kabir both laugh. A waiter comes over and takes their order.
Kabir becomes serious. "Anyways, I didn't call you to talk about Siddharth. I, uh, I wanted to...I wanted..."
"What is it? Something serious?"
Kabir sighs. "Raj, it's, uhmm, it's about Rachna..."
Raj also becomes serious. "What's wrong Kabir? Is she all right?"
"Hmmm, she's ok. But I need to ask you something. And you have to promise that you will tell me the truth."
"What? What do you want to ask?"
"It's about Rachna. You've known her since college right?"
"Yeah. We've been best friends since then. Why are you asking?"
"Uhh, Raj, please don't take this the wrong way. It's just that I've known her since we were kids. But for some reason I had to move away and I wasn't in touch with her for many years. It's a long story. Anyways, it's just that when I saw Rachna after I came back to Benaras she seemed different...a bit subdued, quieter, more reserved. When we were little, she used to have a sparkle in her eyes and you couldn't help but laugh and be happy if you were around her..."
Raj smiles as he recalls his college days with Rachna. "Yeah, Kabir. She's like that. She just loves to make people happy. She's a bit shy at first but once you get to know her, you can't live without her."
Kabir nods in agreement. "Yeah, you're right. She's always been like that. A bubbly, sweet girl. But there's something wrong Raj. I noticed it in her eyes first when I met her at the interview. They just seemed so sad, full of pain...I don't know. I couldn't figure it out. But in the past few weeks, she seemed ok. The pain seemed to be going away. But then when I saw her today...oh god, she was a mess. And her eyes..."
"This is all because of that idiot. He..."
Raj suddenly stops talking. Kabir looks at him confused.
"What? What did you just say? Who are you talking about?"
"Uhhh Kabir, it's nothing."
"Nothing? What do you mean nothing Raj? I clearly saw that you became angry when you were talking about someone. In fact, you called him an idiot. Who are you talking about?"

Rachna's Room.
"He sent me a message mummy." Rachna whispers as silent tears fall from her eyes.
Shail is confused. "Whose message beta? Who are you talking about?"
Flashback:
Rachna could not work on her designs last night since she was having serious designer's block so she decided to put her work away and video chat with Chaya for little bit. She had opened her laptop and was waiting for Chaya to log on to oovoo . In the meantime, Rachna thought it would be good to check her Facebook. She had not been able to log on since she had returned from New York. Rachna found 53 messages in her Inbox, most of them junk messages from random guys hitting on her, some of them were from her friends back in NY. But seeing one particular message had taken her breath away.
Flashback Ends.
Shail prods Rachna to talk. "What message Rachna?"
"From him."
Shail's eyes grow wide as she understands who Rachna is talking about. She immediately becomes furious.
"What? How dare he? How dare he contact you? We will not leave him!!! Rachna, let's talk to your papa. We will complain to the police and file a report against him for harassment."
Rachna sits up and shakes her head. "No mummy. Promise me that you will not tell papa anything. He will become very upset if he hears about this."
Shail calms down and reluctantly agrees with Rachna. "Ok fine beta. I won't tell your papa anything. But Rachna, why are you getting so upset beta? He went away from your life so many years ago...and you have also moved on beta."
Rachna does not answer.
Shail knows that her daughter is still hurt by whatever happened so many years ago. She knows that Rachna had applied to NYU and went there only so she could forget all about him. Rachna puts up a brave face in front of the world but Shail knows that her daughter has not been able to forget him even today.
Shail hugs Rachna to comfort her. Rachna just stays enveloped in her mom's arms.

Coffee Shop.
"Kabir I don't know if I have the right to tell you anything. I mean, I know that you are Rachna's friend and all but honestly, it's not my story to tell...it's Rachna's. If she feels comfortable with you then she will definitely tell you. I think you should talk to her about it."
Kabir is disappointed. "C'mon Raj! You can't just leave me hanging like this!"
Raj shakes his head and gets up to leave. "I'm sorry Kabir. But really, it's about Rachna's life and only she has the right to decide who knows about her personal life. Sorry dude."
Raj leaves. Kabir punches the table in frustration.
[Kabir's Thoughts]
Sh*t! What the hell was that??! Raj didn't help me at all! What do I do now? How do I find out? What could it possibly be that has hurt Rachna so much? Who could it be? I have to find out...I just have to find out...
Kabir leaves the coffee shop and decides to drive home.
