Story: Plagued by paranormal encounters and subsequent mysterious deaths, an extended family residing in a palatial house seeks the help of detective Samrat to investigate the matter.

Review: Samrat Tilakdhari aka STD (Rajeev Khandelwal) is the desi Sherlock Holmes, famous for his brilliant analytical mind and formidable martial abilities. Not one to offend his intelligence, he only takes up cases that are challenging enough.

A deserted haveli in Shimla gives Samrat what he's looking for - a daunting task to battle a villain, who may or may not have supernatural powers. As threats turn into grisly murders, Samrat connects the dots to realise there's more to the puzzle than meets the eye.

The film is predominantly a formulaic 'whodunit' thriller, which aspires to be Sherlock Holmes but ends up looking like its parody. This too opens with a bare-knuckle, slow-mo boxing scene like Guy Ritchie's film (starring Robert Downey Jr.), but thereafter, fails to instill a sense of fear or anxiety, thanks to the excessive dialogue.

Samrat's sidekick CD (Gopal Datt as Chakradhar aka Watson) annoys with his compulsive talking, while Samrat over-explains his deductions. Also, the film seems overlong as it crawls towards an elongated, predictable climax. Barring Rajeev Khandelwal, everyone else is loud. The script lacks punch as the 'Samratisms' (one-liners) are anything but clever. To top it all, an animated Shimla evokes maximum laughter.

While it's brave of the conservative Rajshri productions to take the leap - from family dramas to thrillers, the effort should have been more compelling. While Sherlock Holmes was dismissive of mediocrity, Samrat succumbs to it.

Samrat & Co movie review: Rajeev Khandelwal's detective film is a half-baked attempt!

Samrat & Co movie review, Samrat & Co film review, detective film, Barjatya, Rajshri Films, Kavita Barjatya, Kaushik Ghatak, Samrat & Co film review

The first detective film of this year releases this Friday. Read on to find out if it is worth watching...

Rajeev Khandelwal's detective film Samrat & Co may be the first detective film of the season but it definitely will leave you than flabbergasted. I agree Bollywood doesn't produce quality detective films, but director Kaushik Ghatak, who is a Bengali by birth, should have taken some cues from Bengali literature, which is filled with classic cult detective novels"Feluda, Byomkesh Bakshi, etc. The movie has too many flaws to be counted and makes you laugh as to whether a detective, who is supposed to be a sane rational logical person, can do so many mistakes.

You won't believe this movie review till the interval, as the first half of the film is actually very mysterious and evokes many a meaningful questions in your head. You start the second half of the film on a very high note expecting all your doubts to be cleared and to witness a truly awe-inspiring detective saga, but all you get post the interval is a pot full of mistakes. To name a few, detectives don't talk much. On the contrary, they speak less and observe more. They think a lot in their minds but never speak it aloud like a Shakespearean soliloquy. Then again a detective murder mystery movie uses numerous characters to confuse the audience till the end as to who the real murderer is, but that's not the case here. There is definitely a deluge of characters but most of them come for about 30 seconds onscreen and thus you will never have an iota of doubt considering them as the real murderer. And lastly, it is not a compulsion to add a romantic angle in a detective movie. You should understand that a romantic angle in the middle, which makes no sense, diverts the audience's attention away from the mystery and suspense.

The Plot:

A young, beautiful and rich girl, Dimpy Singh (Madalsa Sharma), approaches Samrat Tilakdhari (Rajeev Khandelwal), a private investigator, with a strange case. How will Samrat unfold the mysteries and the new mysteries while solving the case is what the plot of the film revolves around.

Performances:

Rajeev Khandelwal performs well, but it seems that the director did not properly explain the role to him and thus his good acting skills will also make you guffaw. You are left to believe that the same guy can diffuse a bomb, pick up a girl in his arms and show off his karate skills to the villain, all at the same time. Gopal Dutt has given an equally good performance and he is the only one for whom you would want to watch the film till the end.

Rest of the actors like Madalsa Sharma, Girish Karnad, Priyanshu Chatterjee, Sujata Sanghmitra, Shreya Narayan, Indraneil Sengupta, Barkha Bisht, Ravi Jhankal, Puja Gupta, Navin Prabhakar, Rajneesh Duggal, Bhaumik Sampat, Pradeep Welankar, Smita Jaykar, Deepak Shroff, Ramgopal Bajaj, Anurag Jha, Ajay Bhandari, Gufi Paintal, Kabir Chopra and others have been wasted as they all get almost no time to show their skills off.

Verdict:

Produced by Kavita Barjatya, this was touted as a surprise package from Rajshri Productions, who are better known for their family dramas. But all the expectations are let down by director Kaushik Ghatak. Trust me Samrat is no Sherlock Holmes, Feluda, Byomkesh Bakshi or Hercule Poirot. If you love to see Bollywood mystery films and have nothing else to watch this weekend, better get yourself a DVD of Bhool Bhulaiyaa and rewatch rather than going for this squanderous stinker.

Review: Don't watch this Samrat & Co

Rajeev Khandelwal in Samrat and Co

Samrat & Co might be about an extraordinarily observational man's fight against crime but as far as cinema goes, this film is a crime against the genre, writes Paloma Sharma.

Every 1990's schoolgirl's once heartthrob, Rajeev Khandelwal plays detective/Robert Downey Jr/Benedict Cumberbatch in Kaushik Ghatak's Samrat & Co. and though he has graduated to the big screen, Khandelwal stays true to his alma mater by launching into a soliloquy every five minutes.

All that's missing is 'Tan, tana na na, Kamolikaaa' playing in the background.

Samrat & Co. follows the classic whodunit formula, set in a mansion on the seemingly remote and isolated outskirts of Shimla -- except that the imagery seems more Middle Earth than Himachal Pradesh.

A beautiful heiress arrives at Samrat's doorstep one day -- in a yellow convertible and a short matching dress, because how else will we know that she is pampered and rich? -- and pleads with him to take up her case. It is a matter of life and death for her father.

But Samrat's assistant, Chakradhar or CD of the Sansani-inspired Chakradhar ka Chakravyufame, declines upon hearing that the prime suspect is a tormented spirit that haunts the house. Instead, he offers to give her the number of a famous 'Bengali baba'.

But Samrat Tilakdhari, whom CD loves to call STD (yes fellow teenagers, you may giggle now), is intrigued by the challenge and sets off to solve what could be the toughest case of his life.

Along the way, Samrat encounters his fair share of heroes, villians and people who don't really have a life.

Revenge is sought for the most childish of reasons. Love is cheesier than a pizza; and Samrat transforms from Downey Jr in the Sherlock series to Keanu Reeves in Speed and Batman fromBatman begins.

Characters seem to be created more out of demand of the financer than that of the script itself and too many of them, with mostly underdeveloped backgrounds, spoil the plot.

The film is fun when it starts off, albiet a little silly, and manages to build up an impatience in the viewer. You can wait for the plot to unravel. But the moment the interval ends, you end up wishing you had walked out.

Samrat & Co looks like it has completely been shot in chroma. Real locations are few and far between. Shimla's dropping temperature seems to have no effect on heroines who prance around in frocks befitting 10 year olds while CD's nose turns as red as that of Rudolph's.

I honestly wish I had performances to praise but at the risk of sounding snobbish and cynical, I can only advise you to watch this if you're a fan of the Dolly Bindra school of acting.

An exceptionally awkward romance angle has been forced into the mix, possibly to add a song.

What is a romantic song doing in a mystery movie, you ask? Good question. Let's see if STD can figure that one out.

A blatant, unashamed and at times, scene-by-scene copy of films like Sherlock Holmes,Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and Bhool Bhulaiya, Samrat & Co might have a good enough screenplay buried somewhere beneath all the trash but none of it shows in the execution.

Samrat & Co might be about an extraordinarily observational man's fight against crime but as far as cinema goes, this film is a crime against the genre.

Do not go by those who do not know a good detective drama if you served it on a plate with champagne

Samrat & Co.' Spins Tale of Mystery With Perfection

  • Rate This

(L-r) Madalsa Sharma, Gopal Datt and Rajeev Khandelwal in "Samrat & Co."
  • MUMBAI, India

The world of a private investigator is almost completely alien to the Hindi screen. We have had quirky, cunning private eyes in multiple films, as also spies, plainclothes detectives and ace cops. But we have never seen a private investigator on a case from entirely his perspective. And we have never seen someone using only his brain to solve unfathomable mysteries and "webs of deceit,"' as Sherlock Holmes termed them.

Virtually the only complaint I have against this film is the car bomb sequence, straight out of so many older films in India and abroad, which was not needed even if we are told that detective Samrat (Rajeev Khandelwal) is an expert in martial arts. If some thrills for the hoi-polloi was the only aim, there were surely better alternatives in sync with the film's protagonist and the pitch of this remarkable film.

Director and main writer Kaushik Ghatak, a detective genre addict, models his lead character along the lines of ace fictional sleuths (but without copying or imitating any) and keeping them relevant to modern India. Ghatak, a shrewd student of detective fiction (which in India thrives most in Ghatak's home state of Bengal), etches a razor-sharp character in the hero as well as in his Dr. Watson-esque associate, Chakradhar Pandey (Gopal Datt).

Throughout the absorbing and thrilling narrative (at interval point, you wish there was no break, which happened to me last with "A Wednesday!"), Samrat, aka STD (his surname is Tilakdhari!) uses his brains and instincts to figure out solutions. So we excuse the stylized action sequence by which he outwits a key villain.

In a complex case that brings the Mumbai sleuth to the hills of Himachal Pradesh, Samrat has to unravel the reason a mansion's garden is rotting and why its owner Mahendra Pratap Singh (Girish Karnad) is seemingly shriveling along with it. Dimpy (Madalsa Sharma), Singh's daughter, commissions Samrat, and when he arrives, her brothers (Priyanshu Chaterjee and Indroneil Sengupta) have opposite reactions to his presence.

Soon there is a murder and a seemingly clear culprit. But Samrat goes deep into the matter, associating with Inspector Khaled (Bhaumik Sampat). As the head count of victims mounts and various sinister angles surface, the suspects increase exponentially " the dead man's sons, his mentally disturbed daughter Divya (Shreya Narayan), a neighboring couple (Smita Jaykar and Deepak Shroff) that has moved in recently, the family chauffeur who aims to be a performer (Navin Prabhakar), Dimpy's ex-boyfriend Anuj (Ajay Bhandari) and more. To complicate matters, there is a "tantrik" (Ram Gopal Bajaj) and some mysterious hate (e)mail that reached Mahendra before his death. And of course Singh's will.

All the red herrings and clues are in place, some presented upfront to the audience. The ominously dark atmosphere is wonderfully created, the sense of foreboding complete thanks to superb camerawork (Sanjay Malwankar), production design (Jayant Deshmukh), visual effects (Prasad Sutar) and Digital Intermediate color correction (Makrand Surte). These are the true backstage heroes alongside the fantastic writing and direction. Sanjay Masoomm's dialogues deserve a special applause as an extension of the meticulous screenplay by Ghatak and Manish Shrivastav.

Sandeep Shirodkar's excellent background score evokes the right moods throughout. The songs are impressive, too, though the best composition, "Sawaaalon Mein" is barely used.

Rajeev Khandelwal soars far higher than in his past films and comes up trumps as Samrat, though one wishes that he occasionally reduced his speed of talking because some lines are missed. He has imbibed the character of Samrat deep into his psyche, and detractors may smirk that there is a lot of Holmes-ian energy in him, which was needed.

Madalsa has a pleasing presence and does well. Gopal Datt as Samrat's right hand is loud at first but soon settles down. Everyone from the supporting cast is impressive, though special marks are in order for Priyanshu Chaterjee, Indroneil Sengupta, Bhaumik Sampat, Navin Prabhakar and Rajniesh Duggal. Girish Karnad is good, too.

A perfect movie for its genre, "Samrat & Co" needs the complete support of an audience seeking a new definition to entertainment in this virgin genre in Indian cinema. We sincerely hope that the film is successful and we get to watch the next adventure of Samrat " a case mentioned in the end about a princess " a.s.a.p.!

Rating: ***** (Despite the bomb sequence!)

Boxoffice capsule:

As per early trends, Kanchi will struggle for 1.5 - 2 cr nett figure on day one and ''Samrat & Co.'' will face stiff task to achieve even 75 lakhs day one total. ''Revolver Rani'' is best out of new releases but 3 cr nett what film should realistically achieve on day one
