Beijing, May 14: A private businessman has been fined 600,000 yuan ($78,000) for breaking China's strict one child policy, state media reported. Xinhua News Agency said family planning officials in Anhui province handed out the fine. It did not identify the businessman or say how he broke the law.

China's family planning policy, implemented in the late 1970s, limits most urban couples to one child and rural families to two in an attempt to control population growth and conserve natural resources in the world's most populous country.

Rising incomes mean some newly rich can afford to break the rules and pay resulting fines. But last month the government said it would crack down on rich lawbreakers with bigger fines. China has about 1.3 billion people, 20 percent of the world's total. The government has pledged to keep the population under 1.36 billion in 2010, and under 1.45 billion in 2020.

The news agency Sapa-DPA reported that a week ago, Zhang, the nation's top family-planning official, warned of the danger of a population rebound as more and more wealthy Chinese are able to afford to pay fines for breaking the one-child rule. The number of the wealthy who have more than one child is rising rapidly in China.

OMG.....In india can we put like this law??

I think now there is a law for at least politicians to have only 2 children. No applicable to Laloo. But the ones who got married after a particular year. I am not very sure about this. Can someone please throw some light on this?

I don't think so Maya. India is a democracy. These kind of laws will kill democracy. I am not defending Indian Policy here but merely stating a fact.

That is another debate now😃. But I am sure I read about this 2 children policy to get party tickets. Is it in Rajasthan or Haryana? I can't remember now. At one point I think in 2003 Advani was planning to make it a rule to have only 2 children from a definite year.

But till half the population is unaware of family planning I don't think it is feasible.

yup..illiteracy is a bigger problem than anything else in India. Debate on democracy...agree with what you are thinking...winning party not managing a clean sweep with over 50% votes.....but no matter what, no one wants to loose the vote banks. So, no such rules can ever be put in place there. They play politics of votes.

When I was in china abt 18 mo ago the hotel I stayed in everyday on elevator we would see All Non-Chinese people were with Chinese babies. Not only one baby but two. Girls are mostly given away for adoption.

Someone Pls Correct me if I am wrong but the only way parents can keep two children is if they had twins.

Actually, no as I recall the you can't have more than one. If you do, you have to put it up for adoption, no matter what. Which I think is so awful🤢
