🤓😆 Bollywood fans on this forum are so mean to the aunties. What do Kajol, Aish, Madhuri, etc. lack that the young heroines don't? Sure, they got age on their side. Soon BEBO and PEECEE will be in that age group. And will Deepika and Sonam stay young forever? Everyone ages. Why DISCRIMINATE against the sexy aunties in BOLLYWOOD? Please share your thoughts. 😉

What sells may remain

So before Bollywood. Blame the audiences. Blame the 70% of audiences which are youth and who wants to see everything young and refreshing (except Khans or strong scripts)

well majority of people don't want to accept this but its a fact whether men or women, the thinking of Indian society plays a major role in foiling the progress of older women.
men only lusts for women when they are young, the day they cross their 30's they are forgotten no matter how sexy they still would be, however this won't be the case of men where khans, devgans, kumars still rule and WHAT'S WORSE the similar gender is a part too...they give higher respect to men than supporting their own gender. not surprised !

also the 30's plus women don't have the fire to reckon the bollywood and take the flow of their careers in control. they confesses that its time to settle down and make babies, and they day they do so they are thrown out, but even if they aren't the situation is never the same.

i don't expect any change for atleast 50 years. so its best for a person to give their best and move on !

It's the backward mentality. Nothing else. They want women to sit at home after a certain age, wonder why they still work or why their husband/in laws "allow" them to work, why can't they sit at home with kids.

I'm amused how men (even if they look like stale brinjals!) are accepted in any kind of role whereas women are "expected" to do age appropriate roles (play mummy or bhabhi).

Many females are well maintained nowadays. Yet they don't get good roles.

I think young people are also stereotypical in their thinking. Both starlets and audience put down older actresses. Starlets are insecure and looking to make a place for themselves. While young audience is plain mean IMO.

I feel older women should get entertaining films and roles. And not just restrict themselves to parallel cinema. MD's Ghagra song in YJHD got a great response for example.

I think it's also industry's fault that they have limited range of roles for heroines. Same thing when done by an older heroine seems stale, but is viewed as fresh if done by a younger girl.
Heroines also need to reinvent themselves and show they have more to offer besides the stuff that made them famous in past.

I'll mainly blame system and society for it.

Well blame BW a lil for force feeding the audience for so many decades. The audience wouldn't have cared if BW didn't make definite gender differences bw actors and actresses. Actors tend to alays be the "heroes" and the "saving grace" while the actresses are these delicate, damsel in distress. I think the turning point started a few years back, but this trend began way back in the 60s/70s.

If BW stops believing that the audience is dumb and shallow-minded then there's no problem. But Zoya brought up this great point along with Kiran Rao that cinema tends to play cues in films to let the audience know that so and so is a romantic scene, or a dramatic scene or a comedic scene. And then critics saying leave your brain at home and shit.

Just make good movies, cast actresses that can act and write original things. Entertainment sells no matter who is casted--a young gal or an older, experienced woman.

And can we stop referring to senior actresses as aunties and actors as uncles. I never see such disdain in HW or any other cinema but only BW. Like age should be applauded and the fact that they have so much experience and a nice legacy behind them.

Looks argument doesn't hold water. Today's actresses are quite fit for their age and poor things go through all sorts of treatments to look young. And if heroes can be made to look young with all sorts of make up, special effects etc. then why not heroines?

That said heroines must also reinvent themselves the way actors do different kinds of roles, adopt different looks - instead of offering same expressions or thumkas that they did 20 years ago. If old tricks are the mainstay then one would prefer to watch same things in old movies than new ones.
